The High/Low Storage Game: November 2016

I was recently searching for an item for our laundry room project, and per usual, I was on a quest to find a great "deal". Generally when I am purchasing something for a space in our home, or even clothing for our family, I tend to look towards designer items as inspiration, and then start digging to find a similar look-a-like option that is within our personal budget. This little "hobby" we will call it, only increased more and more as I continued to blog more, and also as I continued to read more design focused magazines and websites. It is easy to see a beautiful room and instantly feel as though it is not obtainable, but that is where the fun comes in. Because truly you can pull inspiration from a room done on any budget. Maybe that is why I always loved Sabrina Soto's High/Low Project, and why the High/Low pages are the first I head to in HGTV's magazine every month. It is also why we tend to DIY many of the storage items around our home.

What makes one thing more expensive than another is always based on many variables; size/dimensions, quality, finish, materials, demand/availability, brands... And it is always a personal choice in regards to what you are willing to sacrifice for the sake of saving a dollar or two. Sometimes we may decide to splurge on something because the quality can't be beaten, and other times we may shop around and get the look by hacking an item from IKEA. It is all a give and take, right?

I know many of you have expressed that finding items on a budget is important to you as well, but I also know many of you love stylish storage just as much as I do. So a new series is born; The High/Low Storage Game. And here are the first eight items I found to share with you today.

I selected items that I would naturally gravitate to in an organizational, storage and design state of mind. In fact, a few of these have been on my wish list for some time, and a couple of items in the "low" column are hanging around our home already. Can you guess which ones?

The best part is that the low cost version can absolutely function just as well as the item in the high end column. Some even have identical dimensions, but only cost a happy fraction of the price.

While I pulled these particular items, I used a variety of methods to find a budget version of the higher end design. So the next post on this subject won't be actual items, but general searching and sourcing tips so you can feel just as excited as I do when you win the high/low lottery. #itsatotalrush #gameon

I have already sourced even more high/low products because I fell down a rabbit hole of deals. But I would love to know if there are certain storage items that you would like for me to focus on specifically. It can be anything from underbed storage to hangers to a piece of furniture. I am game!

    1. Thanks for letting me know Marite - the images are embedded through Photobucket so I am not sure why they aren't showing up (I have tried on two computers, a few browsers and my devices and I see them). Do you have an ad blocker on? I am sorry for the trouble.

  2. Hi Jen! I just wanted to take a minute to say hello and tell you how much I admire you, your style and your work. You provide tons of inspiration for this nerdy organizer. Haha! I love the new high/low game series! It's frustrating to find something you love when you can't afford it or aren't willing to spend that money at the moment. I often find myself passing up things that I love because I think I can find it somewhere else cheaper. Problem is, I hardly ever get around to doing so. I look forward to your tips, links and more fabulous ideas!

  3. I just did this exercise today with Pottery Barn curtains. I decided to get cheap white ones and add ribbon trim myself :) I would love some tips on affordable but stylish filing cabinets! I'm looking for one for our office/music room that can be a filing cabinet disguised as a side table.

    1. I can definitely add a filing cabinet to my list. Thanks for the suggestion! And a little DIY is often a great way to get a look for less, the ribbon will really take your window panels up a notch.

  4. You did a great job of finding the high low items! Funny but on several of the pairs, I really liked the low end better! :)

  5. I'd love to find stylish but affordable toy storage for a playroom/dining room (it's mostly used as a playroom except for holiday dinners.

  6. I'd love to find a desk that has filing drawers, but looks stylish enough to be in a living area. Also, I've been looking for storage for dirty laundry that doesn't use much floor space and would be functional for kids. I've seriously been hunting for months!!
