I must warn you... If you are looking for a Pinterest frenzy of a teen boy room, you have come to the wrong place (but you can check out some super cool children bedroom ideas here). But I did want to share a little about how I handled marrying the requests of our son with some organizational needs, to give him a space that we are all really happy with.
The first order of business was to see what was important to Preston. Here were his thoughts:
- Keep the closet desk area - this was his number one request as it is his favorite spot in his entire bedroom
- Ensure it is sleepover friendly
- Keep a place to do/store puzzles (away from his younger brothers who like to "help")
- Display the Twins baseball artwork that he made at school
- Inject his love for baseball (without it getting too "theme" like)
- Include teal in some way
Sounds easy enough but I found that I really needed to take my time with this room, making little updates here and there as they felt right and as he used his space. Just when I would think I was done, I would walk by and something new would catch my eye. A frame hung at the wrong height, a mismatched trim or paint color, awkward furniture placement... The younger two boys share a room right next door, and when I spot their room from the hall, it makes my heart flutter in the best of ways. Now both rooms seem to flow together in a way, yet they each uniquely fit our boy's personalities.
The existing trim was painted in Ralph Lauren's Iron Blue, which has a hint of teal in it. The lower wall was previously painted in a very shiny blue color that reflected and created excessive glares, so I toned it down with a lighter tealy blue color in an eggshell finish (Ralph Lauren's Adelaide Blue). The new finish reduced the glare, is still easy to wipe clean, and brought in some of that teal color that Preston is fond of. All of the white trim in the room also received a fresh coat of paint and all of the outlet covers were finally swapped to a true white vs. the previous almond color.
We have had an old faux leather bench for years, and it works perfectly for storing the frequently used sleepover gear; an air mattress, bedding, extra toiletries, etc....
The leather was looking a bit worn and dated, so I used some inexpensive linen navy fabric to recover it (using this tutorial). It turned out so nice and instantly looked like a whole new piece! It also now ties to the navy curtains we hung across the way.
Above the bench, a handy basket holds random sport items such as a signed baseball glove, baseballs tied to important memories, football rule books and a bundle of ribbons and medals that Preston has earned over the years.
It is not a traditional setup to use an armoire as a closet and a closet as a workspace, but that is what our kiddo requested so we made it work. The armoire is a bit of a space hog, but it is ultra organized and Preston has been fine sacrificing this corner of his room.
As much as I like having throw pillows on benches and beds, I know they will ultimately be used as floor/chair cushions and for brotherly pillow fights. Because I am certain that our son will not be fluffing throw pillows and making his room look finished and cozy on a daily basis, they will likely live in the over-sized basket I placed near his bed instead.
The headboard has remained the focal point in the room, and it gives us all a super-sized grin each and every day. I love that our son has a piece of furniture in his room constructed by his dad, and one that he can take with him the day he moves out (but I try not to think about that day... it is approaching much too quickly).
To the right of his bed, I painted his nightstand the same Iron Blue that I love (it is such a good navy!), and added some new hardware. It was previously the same stained finish as the headboard and the combo was a little bit too much on the eyes in such a small corner of the room.
We are always playing the musical lamp game, and for the way our son uses his room, a task lamp felt a bit more appropriate for nighttime reading sessions. A few years ago I had purchased a task lamp from West Elm in yellow... that color is so specific and no longer fit any of our spaces, but I tucked it away in my closet under the stairs knowing that some day I would be brave enough to spray paint it. That day came when our weather recently cooperated; I will admit I was a little nervous to go after such a nice lamp. It took me over 45 minutes to tape off every last detail with precision painter's tape tearing and sticking, and only 5 to actually spray the lamp, but the results were just as I had hoped. As the boys always tell me, "You have to risk it to get the biscuit". I selected white to balance out the white in the photo frames and in the nearby curtain panels.
Random note: These glass bottles are great for nighttime water drinkers.
Preston made the Minnesota Twins artwork at school last year, and one of his requests was that it be displayed in his room. To pair with the art, I printed off some of the more artistic shots I took of him playing baseball over the past few years and hung them around his bedroom.
After I hung our fantastic navy print curtain panels in the shared boy's bedroom, my son and I decided they would also look great in his room (and we had a total of four panels so it worked out perfectly).
However, we have a teenage boy on our hands and he finally decided that he likes to sleep in on the weekends and even occasionally take a nap. I took a few hours to add a nice and thick lining to the backside of each panel. It is something you would never notice looking at the room, but a great investment of time to keep the bright morning sun out during his
While moving his bed, we found a lot of random items that were being "stored" not so neatly underneath. After hanging his chalkboard calendar, we had the ideal space below to add a small locker. It added some storage for extra puzzles, some crafting and school supplies and a box of mementos.
I also added a plant to bring in some life... and to see how well he takes care of it. Knowing this kid, the plant will be twenty feet tall in six months...
The stain on the chalkboard calendar no longer worked with the stain of the headboard and nearby study organizer, so I painted it the same gray as the armoire on the opposite side of the room (Sherwin William's Gray Matters). I also recently switched from chalk markers to these awesome chalk pencils, which write and erase much better on the chalkboard paint. I found I need to personally date the calendar each month or our son won't take the time to use it... but when he does use it he finds it to be helpful for keeping track of test dates, practice schedules and time off of school.
His current puzzle is still stored on the puzzle board we made him a few years ago. It has worked out so well for his love of doing puzzles; the board simply slides under his bed in-between sessions. I may add a low profile tray to add a little extra protection for all of the loose pieces he likes to keep out as he works.
And now for his favorite spot in the room... his closet workspace! I think he loves it so much because it is like a room within a room. I personally love those paneled walls!
The shelves are the perfect place for him to display any trophies/awards and more sport memorabilia. He stores extra notebooks and paper in one of the magazine files and important schoolwork he wants to keep in the other.
The study organizer on the wall has done a great job in keeping his nightly work surface clutter free. He is still using the console desk Bryan built me a few years back.
And because I am a huge believer that hooks are your best organizing friend when it comes to kids; we have another row behind his door. He uses these flip down hooks for hats, his backpack, sport bags, etc...
And that completes the tour. The room is simple enough to maintain easily, yet still has his personality sprinkled throughout. It is a room that he and his friends can hang out in, and one that he can also use to find quiet study time. Most importantly, it is a room that can grow with him as he continues through high-school. #sigh #slowdowntime
We may still try and add a little pattern or pizazz to the upper portion of the wall, if the right paper or stencil comes along. But until then, we are just letting this room be and excited that our son is happy with the outcome of his space.
As I mentioned, we have been making small tweaks to this room for the past few years, below is a round-up of many of the projects we have completed along the way:
- Painted and Organized Armoire
- DIY Study Wall Organizer
- DIY Chalkboard Calendar
- DIY Herringbone Headboard
- DIY Nightstand
- DIY Puzzle Board
- Closet Workspace Paneling Process
- DIY Wood Console Desk

Great job on the Twins logo! I am a big Twins fan too! Except, you know, I live on the right side of the river! ;)
ReplyDeleteI love it! I have three boys too. Where did the clock radio on the nightstand come from?
ReplyDeleteIt was a PB Teen purchase a few years back, unfortunately they no longer sell that specific model.
DeleteWow! I haven't dropped in for months and I'm so glad I did. together you have created a beautiful space. :)
ReplyDeleteAMAZING!!!! This room makes me want to be a teen boy x
ReplyDeleteWow his room looks amazing.
ReplyDeleteLove the planter. Can you pass on the source?
ReplyDeleteHello,
DeleteThe planter was from Target last year, but I can't seem to find a link to it online any longer.
This is beautiful (in a very manly way)! Change out some of the decor and add a bigger bed and I wouldn't mind having this for myself and my husband! Great job!
ReplyDeleteYou have such a good eye - your son's room is beautifully done! Will you please share where you got the navy pillow with white stripes and tassels? Thanks!
ReplyDeleteThank you Libb! I found the pillow cover on clearance from West Elm. It doesn't look like the navy is available any longer, but they still have it in a sea blue colorway: http://bit.ly/1T8XmFq
DeleteThis looks awesome! It makes me wish my son's room was bigger so I could fit half this stuff in there! :)
ReplyDeleteSo beautiful! So functional! So perfect! Another fantastic space by Jen Jones :-)
ReplyDeleteNice, neat, cool and organized! perfect for a young man!
ReplyDeleteHis room looks amazing! You are such a nice mom to do all of that for your son. I hope he appreciates you and all that you do! It looks like you put a lot of care, love and hard work into his room. You have created such a beautiful and organized home for you and your family to enjoy. Thank you for sharing and inspiring! I have been visiting your blog for years now and I love it!
ReplyDeleteBTW, I have 4 kiddos (all boys!) - so crazy and sweet at the same time, right?
-Erin
Thank you so much Erin. And you are absolutely right, it is completely crazy and incredibly sweet always. :) I LOVE being a boy mom!
DeleteWhat a great kids room. I love the clean lines and especially the desk/closet.
ReplyDeleteI'd love to put my kids beds in the middle of the room but I'm always worried that it will reduce the useable area. What are the dimensions of this room?
Hi Jocelyn,
DeleteI agree it seems to take up space in an awkward way. It wasn't my first layout choice but it was what he picked and it turned out to work great and make the room nice and cozy. His space is 11' 4" x 10' (the longer wall being the wall his headboard is on). :)
Perfect!! LOVE the color!

His room turned out great! That's neat that you respected his wishes along the way and took your time to make him the room he wanted. He did a fantastic job on his art project!
ReplyDeleteAMAZING! I have a preteen. thanks for the great ideas
ReplyDeleteThe room looks fantastic!
ReplyDeleteAmazing! That desk area/closet workspace!! I love, love it!
ReplyDeleteWow, such an amazing room for your son. Every detail is just perfect. I can just imagine how much he loves it all. Great work, Jen!!
ReplyDeleteAwesome-sauce!! Love every last detail! He is a lucky young man!
ReplyDeleteWait was this the guest room previously with that beautiful wallpaper in the closet desk area????
ReplyDeleteOh no, we still have our guest room and the pretty wallpaper closet is still brining joy to us and our guests!
DeleteLove the big wardrobe idea. Saving this for when we eventually turn our oldest son's closet into a bathroom :)
ReplyDeletelove the room! Y'all did a fantastic job!
ReplyDeleteHis room literally looks like a model house!! Perfection!
ReplyDeleteEvery detail is perfect! And I agree with Preston - I love the desk in the closet! The whole room is great!
ReplyDeletelove and blessings~

Such an amazing room! Jen, you did a great job again! Can I ask what's the name of the plant in your son's room?
ReplyDeleteI can't recall the specific plant name but it was purchased at ikea. :)
DeleteWow, some very inspiring boy's room ideas here Jen!! And GO TWINS! Love the baseball artwork!
ReplyDeleteWow! Gold star for you Jenn! Amazing! I love that this was a family project and that you were able to incorporate every thing on his wish list! You guys really knocked this one out of the park! (Couldn't resist a little baseball analogy!) Thank you for being such a constant source of inspiration! I heart iheartorganizing!
ReplyDeleteI love it. It loves great. The colors go so well together. It's great you made the room work for him and his wishes. I always have to put my two cents in.
ReplyDeleteIt's adorable! I love this room. Awesome job. Your son must be thrilled!
ReplyDeleteThis is seriously great ... love it!
ReplyDeleteAll the best Jan
You certainly came back with a bang Jen; it all looks amazing!!
ReplyDeleteFab as usual! Weird question, do you have a source for the coaster?
ReplyDeleteThank you! The coaster is part of a set I purchased on etsy (they are felt ball coasters).
DeleteLove it! Where did you get the curtain rod?
ReplyDeleteThanks Taryn,
DeleteThe rod is from Target: http://target.com/p/drapery-rod-threshold-medium-silver-1-number-of-pieces-in-set/-/A-50691107
Thank you for this post Jen. I don't have any growing young boys, but have been looking at doing the guest room with a masculine feel. A lot of the pieces you chose as well as that RL paint color I think will work great for my project too.
ReplyDeleteOh my goodness. So so good. Preston must be thrilled. That headboard is amazing and so special. Gorgeous space, Jen. You guys always pull of the best rooms.
ReplyDeleteThis room is picture perfect but where's all his stuff? Doesn't look like a teenager's room really... Hope it's mostly staged and he can pull his stuff out and really enjoy his space.
ReplyDeleteI agree that this blog and the house that it documents can be a bit more picture perfect than lived in (not to mention feminine.) However, we should also remember that not all teenage boys are inclined to paper their walls with band posters and pictures of models in bathing suits.
DeleteI believe that Jen has mentioned that the oldest "P" has inherited her organizational impulses. He may very well have the room exactly as he wants it. Plus, he can add a framed concert poster or two and still keep this room looking sophisticated and grown up.
Thank you for the comments. A few things I try to point out from time to time.. Our house is lived in. We have three boys and a couple of pups so there is no way our house can always gleam or I would drive myself crazy trying. But we clean up for the internet because it is forever documented so we put our best foot forward. Just as we would clean before a house party. I encourage those who think it is always perfect to look back at years of before pictures, I have always shown messes in our spaces as well... Our systems fail and our rooms and cabinets become cluttered. I don't aim for perfection, just look to create simple and pleasing systems for our home. I don't use the blog to document every last pile of laundry on the couch or dish in the sink...
DeleteI guess in response to anon, I am not entirely sure what more a 14 year old boy needs. Our son is pretty basic. He sleeps, gets dressed and does his homework and puzzles in his room... Beyond that, he is athletic and out at school functions or hanging with his friends. He really doesn't have much more than pictured. Our kids also have another room in the house for their toys and media so it also allows the bedrooms to be a bit more simplified.
Your son had a great idea to move his bed like that, it looks like it was meant to be there. and he did a great job in his art work!
ReplyDeleteBeautiful! I wish I could fly you out to Vegas and have you help me with my teenage daughters' rooms. I'm so lost!
ReplyDeleteLoving what you've done here! I am trying to imagine a girls version of this, though I guess I have a few years until my 6 y/o needs it..
ReplyDeleteThis room is great! Love the color! Would love to get that basket but the link doesn't seem to work...
ReplyDeleteSorry about the link: http://target.com/p/threshold-lg-round-water-hyacinth-basket/-/A-46758006
DeleteSource for the flip down hooks? Do they spring back closed immediately or do you flip them closed by hand?
ReplyDeleteHere is the source: http://www.ikea.com/us/en/catalog/products/60152590/
DeleteThey flip down by hand, they are not spring loaded.
Love the room! Can you please tell me where you got the basket above the armoire? Thanks!
ReplyDeleteHi Dani,
DeleteThe basket on the top of his armoire was from HomeGoods last year.
xo!
I've been following you on Instagram and just now went to your blog. I'm redoing our guest bedroom and I love the curtains in your son's room. Where did you buy them or did you make them? Thanks!
ReplyDeleteWe made them from Premier Prints fabric found here: https://www.fabric.com/buy/0329814/premier-prints-raji-slub-canal-blue
DeleteYou can see how we used them previously here: http://www.iheartorganizing.com/2014/03/hooked-on-navy.html
xo!
This room is so beautiful! I love the way you painted the upper portion of the wall and the ceiling the same color. I'm going to show this post to my teenage son!
ReplyDeleteLooks amazing. Love everything 😊
ReplyDeleteThe room looks amazing! And I love the Twins artwork, being a Twins fan and all!! The colors are perfect, and the room looks so sophisticated.
ReplyDeleteMy cousin is Paul Molitor! :)
DeleteWe do similar designs for our boys' rooms. I really love that locker cabinet! I think it is a must have for my boys! www.californiatocarolina.com
ReplyDeleteThe wall basket link has expired. Can you tell me where you purchased it? Thanks!
ReplyDeleteI apologize about that, thank you so much for letting me know! Here is the link: http://bit.ly/2uZPYqZ
DeleteThis is absolutely BEAUTIFUL! I'm thinking of painting my son's room very similar. He's a little younger though, so I think I'll go with the blue/grey you had previously with striped curtains to go with his superhero theme (for now lol). I do have a quick question. For the trim that's painted in the darker Ralph Lauren's Iron Blue, I know it's been there for years....can you share how you did that? Or if you didn't....can you tell if it's glued or nailed on? I'm thinking liquid nail plus a little caulking should suffice, but wonder if something additional would be needed to keep it secured over the years. Thanks so much in advance - Gena :)
ReplyDeleteHi Gena! Thank you so much for your kind comments! We installed the chair rail moulding with a brad nailer. If you were to try and use liquid nails, it may be more challenging to get it to stick and remain level during the drying/curing process without the additional support of some nails.
DeleteThanks again and best of luck with your son's bedroom update! <3
