Coffee Table Switcharoo

Happy Friday my friends!  I hope you have a fun weekend ahead of you!  I apologize for the light posting this week, I ended up traveling three days for a work event and came home to birthdays for both my youngest son and my husband.  So much goodness but with my travel, I wasn't able to get as much writing completed as I initially planned.  However, I have another post I am finishing up as part of the blogging series, so I hope to have that out to you asap as well.

Last week I had a few questions and emails regarding our new coffee table, and today I am excited to be sharing the new star of the living room!  She is a beauty!

You may remember our previous coffee table was an inexpensive IKEA table with a faux marble top.  The table itself worked great and did everything that we asked of it in the putting up our feet and holding our drinks department.

This update was purely aesthetics with a side of happiness due to the size change as well.

The new table is almost two inches smaller than the previous table, giving us a little nicer flow in front of the sofa.

But what I truly fell in love with was the warm wood tones and the beautiful detailing.  The table added so much instant warmth to our living area, without having to turn up the heat in our home.

I have been on a huge kick when it comes to bringing wood tones and warmth into our home.  I still love me some major splashes of color paired with beautiful white furniture, however, something needs to balance all of that out.  Sprinkling in various tones of wood has been doing wonders all over our home.

I initially lusted after this Ballard Designs option, however, it was just too expensive and the size wasn't quite right.  And then I spotted this version at World Market, and I couldn't stop thinking about it.

And it was as if they knew I was pondering the purchase because it didn't take long to receive one of their 30% off coupons in my email.  The coffee table universe aligned in my favor and all is right in our living room.  I really love how it plays off of the new wooden top we added to the built-ins in the front of the room.

So what about the faux marble option?  It went where all of our furniture goes to die; to our lower level family room.

Funny thing is we use this space for family movie night and love that our pets can join us on the couch, but it is by far my least finished and therefor least favorite room in our home.  It is a hodge podge of pieces and that huge leather sectional sucks the life out of the windowless area.  But that thing is just so dang practical with pets and kids.  The pillows are all wrong, the leggy furniture is all wrong... someday this room will get our personal touch it deserves, but until then, the coffee table brightened it up just enough to make a small difference and balance out some of that leather.

It offers a place for me to put down my drink, to spot for bowls of popcorn and an area to keep my favorite design books at hand.  Maybe I can find inspiration in one of those books to finally get something moving in this space... oh the irony!

But, until I know for sure if the couch will live on forever in the Jones abode, the footstool and coffee table combo is functioning just right for us.  It was a win to have a new surface to match the primary function of the room.

With snow in our forecast, our home needs all the warmth it can get right now!  Yes, I said the "S" word...  It makes me shudder as well.

How have you been adding warm touches to your home with the changing of the season?

  1. I LOVE this table! The warm touches are beautiful.

Question- our house is almost identical to yours but we still sleep upstairs instead of in the basement bedroom. We have two young kids and our third is due very soon, I noticed that you have a TV upstairs and downstairs (us too). The kids won't go downstairs without us- which makes me a little crazy, but we are debating getting rid of our upstairs living room tv and then not having toys upstairs to clean up. Have you guys ever thought of trying that? I figure if we make downstairs more of our "living space" as it is way bigger than upstairs and it is totally okay for toys to stay out down there.... hmmm!!! Let me know your thoughts if you can!

And... your leather couch can come down to my house in IL to die ANY DAY. :)

    1. Hi Alli!

I would love to get rid of the TV upstairs, however, hubby is not keen on the idea. In fact, the day we tear the wall down between our kitchen and living room, will give him more of a reason to keep the TV upstairs {he loves to entertain and have football viewing parties}. But I say more power to you if you go that route. We are lucky to have the playroom downstairs and our boys are older so they enjoy their lower level space, so that has helped us combat those toys in our main living areas.

And when the couch needs a new home... it's yours ;)

  2. I wanted to ask about the table, but I just knew you would cover it at some point! I decided to wait and be surprised! I really adore it! I know what you mean - our dark couches suck the light out of our small living room, but we're going to have to live with it for a while. :D

I don't like snow, but cold....LOVE the cold! Stay warm my friend!

  9. I LOVE this coffee table. Our living room is shades of green, tans, and browns, and I would LOVE this table as an accent to our couch. The side details are great. Your living room is gorgeous. I really appreciate your posts.

  12. I need to just say that I also love your basement room with all the "hodge podge" furniture! I know it doesn't seem finished to you or decorated or styled or whatever, but the way you described it is perfect. It's perfect for a family who wants to be together, play together, hang out together. I LOVE that!! It's tough to keep that in mind when looking at our homes. Some of my best memories of my childhood, believe it or not, involve old furniture! I distinctly remember the hodge podge of furniture in our basement and our upstairs "landing/tv room", and have many stories to tell that include them. When I think of the family times and the good times, I see that furniture. Just a thought I wanted to share. Love your style!

    1. I couldn't agree with you more and that is always my sentiment about our entire home. I just meant it is my least favorite decor wise. I love the memories created in every inch of our home. Do I think that our decor impacts our daily moods and that it should reflect us? Absolutely! Does it define us or our memories here? Not for a second. :)

I actually just watched a video of our oldest son when he was two years old and in that very spot in our basement opening Christmas gifts... the walls were completely unfinished, the floor was just cement and we had a small throw rug on the floor. It was dark and unfinished and I am not even sure why we were down there opening gifts, but it will always be one of my favorite family moments. Happy to hear you share the same memories of your childhood. :) xoxo!

  13. First of all, please don't apologize for spending time with your family instead of posting for your readers. They deserve your time after traveling. Also, this table is perfect for the room. Your home has inspired me to think outside the box and not be fair of color and pattern. Thank you!

  14. I love your new coffee table. Isn't World Market the best?! My questions is: I notice lots of home decorating books in your home...which ones are your favorite that you would recommend?

    1. I always love the annual "New Decorating Book" by Better Homes & Gardens, and of course their organizing and storage books as well. I also recently picked up "Bright Bazaar: Embracing Color for Make-You-Smile Style", and "Happy Home: Everyday Magic for a Colorful Life" which are both color happy decor books. I am anxiously awaiting "Elements of Style" to come out as well, it is on my Amazon wishlist. :) xoxo!

  15. Love the table! There is one very similar at West Elm also. It's been on my wish list for quite a while.

Can I ask where the spikey picture ball thing is from? Clearly I have no idea how to describe it, but I love it!

  17. Love that coffee table ... will ponder it for future. I need some changes in the living room. I already have a lot of wood in that room but the shape and texture are great too. I want to make that room a lot more casual.

  18. I think the way you are decorating your house is lovely and so happy! I have question. I see from your post that you have a family room downstairs where you watch movies and spend family time. However, your room upstairs with your new coffee table also has a tv. If the room downstairs is the movie/family room, what is the function of the upstairs room that also has a tv? Doesn't it easily become the popcorn, bring-food-in-watch-a-movie room as well? I'm curious because we've been pondering creating a similar set up in our basement but having two rooms that could function for essentially the same thing bugs me.

    1. Hi Kelly! The tv upstairs is a more of a daily convenience or while hosting a football party type TV and downstairs is more used by the family when we want to snuggle in for the night or the kids while they have friends over. Also, you can see in this photo: http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-6AOVxp6PC9Q/VBiHrcOp54I/AAAAAAAA1vo/-Vb0osqWa4k/s1600/Stained_Limed_Farmhouse_Table_Desk_14.jpg that my desk also faces out to our lower level family room which allows me to keep a tv on in the background from time to time. I would be ok with one less TV in the house, but with a family of five and being cooped up half the year due to cold weather, it is something that works for us. xoxo!

  19. Love the new coffee table Jen! Its gorgeous. World Market is a fav of mine. I just recently decided to swap our large rectangular coffee table for a smaller round one, especially since the downsize. I think a round table will really help soften the room a bit, and it'll help create a much better flow. Love the tone of the wood in your space. Its just so lovely my friend:)

  20. OH MY!!! LOVE EVERYTHING YOU DID!!! Totally love the warmth of the table and how it ties in with the wood holding the TV. 23. That table is gorgeous!! And the match to BD is amazing! This makes me wonder if there is a way to find an item similar to a saved image. Do you know what I mean? World Market has a console table that I would like to have but it is too big for my room. Do you know of any way to search for a table that is similar? Is there a way of searching that way? I keep looking at the Everett Foyer Table but my tiny living room won't accommodate it. Do you use such a search engine? Thanks.

    1. I am not familiar with anything like that at the moment. I receive catalogs for stores I shop at occasionally and browse through them while riding in the car. That is typically where I get a lot of inspiration and spot many of my favorite furniture pieces. xoxo!

  25. I read but don't normally comment. But something about one of these posts just doesn't seem authentic. What am I missing? Did the seams on the table make you crazy? Did your mother is law make a comment about the table? I guess I'm just not believing you loved it as much as you said and Banished it so quickly.

    1. Totally authentic. We purchased the IKEA table inexpensively and impulsively to give us a coffee table in our main living room after we purchased our sectional. I covered it with the marble contact paper to snazz it up a bit and hide the daily fingerprints on the glass. After we painted the room and started bringing in wood tones, I knew I ultimately would love a wood coffee table for the space. The World Market table had the wood tone and detailing I was after, and I had a place to move our other table, so I did just that. I purchased both, and still enjoy both. :)
