We purchased a treadmill years ago, and it is something you don't see make an appearance on the blog all that often because 1) it doesn't get used as much as it should and 2) it is ugly.
It once lived in our laundry room, and once we re-designed the dressing area off of our bedroom, it moved into a corner there.
I hate to say, it was doing a better job holding piles of things I need to deal with, my accessories and handbags and even clothing and hangers. Oh, and collecting dust. Not a very inspiring space to step away and get a quick run in.
The front of the treadmill hid the rest of our gear. Clearly, it needs a good cleaning and a little lovin'.
My goal was to give this little corner a quick refresh to inspire me to use it more frequently, and easily access the workout items. I also wanted to bring in some items to make it even more effective and easy to use when the mood strikes, and also for cleaning up when we are done. Heck, I may be inspired to even create a workout routine and schedule when all is said and done, but one thing at a time.
Part of the problem with this area is that everything is tossed on the floor and becomes dusty and messy. After a bit of measuring, I realized I had enough room to bring in a narrow bookcase to get items off of the floor and make them simple to use and access.
A quick run to our local Target and $20 later, and we had a cheapy white bookcase. Doing what I can to keep this room looking pretty {it is my secret little getaway space}, we decided to give the bookcase a little extra attention. We started by lining the back with some leftover wallpaper from this bookcase project, and building a cap for the top. The cap was designed out of some inexpensive poplar wood from Home Depot.
The cap was essentially a way to make the bookcase seem a bit more substantial and to give the top a finished effect. It would also make it a smidge stronger and hide and wear and tear from shoes and equipment being placed on top. By nailing a few pieces of trim around the front three edges of the poplar board, and giving it a quick coat of stain leftover from past projects, we successfully brought the bookcase from cheap to chic in minutes.
And it just slides on, so it is not a permanent update, but one that we think will stay.
Here is a better view of the area after the bookcase was assembled and everything was put back in place.
I placed the heavier dumbbell weights at the bottom, since that is where there is the most support and the shelf is less likely to sag.
The next shelves hold some more standard gear, such as the medicine ball, yoga brick, resistance bands and back care kit.
Another shelf holds our water bottles, my headband, fitness magazines with workout ideas and cleaning wipes to help us keep things a bit tidier in-between uses.
The upper shelf has been installed and used for a few years now. It is from Ikea, and when installed upside-down, it is the perfect place to store our mats off of the ground. This is one solution that has rocked since the beginning for us!
To hold my iPad during a quick run or down on the floor while stretching, I use an acrylic plate stand. I have been using this for years and love it; it works great at my desk as well.
The small white dish holds our treadmill key. Keeping it there is a safety feature to prevent the littles from hopping at in a moments notice. We also decided to keep it unplugged in-between uses for the same reason.
I added an adorable small basket {also from Target} to hold extra towels for those really intense runs {the kind that have me screaming for help and wobbling off of the treadmill after a good ten minutes}.
And that completes the tour!
I also like to store my workout clothing in their own drawer in my wardrobe as well. That way they are always simple to find.
As far as a routine goes, I sort of just do what I have time for and what I feel like I want to focus on for the day. My goal is 15-30 minutes of some sort of exercise Monday - Friday, just to break up the hours of sitting I do on the computer, but any tips and suggestions from those of you who have mastered this already would be sincerely appreciated.
So how about you? How do you keep your fitness nook organized and inspiring? Any essentials that you have found make for a smoother workout?
I put my treadmill in my sewing room to the side of my tv and I find myself motivated by watching scary movies on netflix. Somehow I feel less scared watching them and the few moments of adrenaline that may occur during viewing just add to a quicker pace! There were some great workout suggestions on the newest episode of the Mindy Project this week too if you need some extra inspiration.
ReplyDeleteI'm picturing a projected screen at your back and surround sound. Wonder if you could make a menage of clips like werewolves chasing you, zombies, that dude from TCM, ...just thinking about it makes me want to run away screaming!
DeleteLove this! I just wish I had room in the house for a treadmill! Running is so therapeutic for me. Until it's warm enough for this FL girl to run in E. TN outside it's cross fit style workouts in the house!

I am absolutely not a morning person, but I've generally found that I'm more likely to exercise if I get it out of the way in the morning. I had a project where I started work at 1 pm, and that was a dream for me--I would wake up at 9 am, work out, and then start work. I made a rule that I would only open my laptop and start working AFTER I was done working out, and it helped me stay motivated.
ReplyDeleteLove that rule! I am a get up and hop right to work with a cup of coffee kind of girl. My problem is that once I sit down, I don't move until the kids are home from school! I am hoping to start working out in the middle of my day, more to stretch and move around a bit to refresh on energy and give my back a little break. Breaking away when I am so immersed with work is hard though so maybe your way would be better. :) Trial and error I suppose!

That "lacy" looking basket......I'm in LOVE!! I'm new to your blog and I am so inspired to get my life back in check and organize my CRAZY house!
DeleteTiffany
Love it all! A ceiling mount corner tv would be perfect to watch those exercise DVDs on. Also, I think it needs some inspiring artwork above the treadmill. Like a motivating quote or something??
ReplyDeleteWe actually have found that we can find most workouts right on our iPads on Netflix now, which is so nice! But I agree about the artwork, we haven't added any to the room yet as I just have not found anything that seems to fit the aesthetics of the space. Definitely keeping my eyes peeled.

Hi Jen
ReplyDeleteThe space looks fantastic! Gorgeous colours. I can't run on a treadmill for the life of me, but you have inspired me to get outside and run. I'm in Australia after all and snow is not something that falls from the sky anywhere near me! No excuses.
Suz
Australia sounds heavenly. Running outdoors is so refreshing!
DeleteLooks great! Now all you need is a pretty and inspirational cork board to hold pics and quotes with fitness inspiration, and some workouts cut from magazines! Also maybe a dry erase calendar for a workout schedule!

Agree! I have been looking around for awhile for something that will fit-in with the space and stay simple at the same time, since I don't want anything visually cluttering. Hasn't been easy to find what I am dreaming up in my mind, may result in some sort of DIY :)

Love this work out area! Hanging that shelf upside is perfect for yoga mats--I may have to borrow that idea :) Having a pretty work out area would definitely motivate me more. Thanks for the inspiration!
ReplyDeleteTwo years ago, I lost a total of 80 lbs. the easiest way possible: 10 min. workout sessions. Using my tablet to search "10 min workout" on YouTube.com was the most convenient way for me. Most of the time there was no needed equipment and I could just bust it out and get my workout on, even on the busiest days!
ReplyDeleteWow! Congratulations girl! You are amazing! <3
DeleteLooks fantastic Jen! I need to work on the space in our basement where our bike and treadmill are. And then get my butt on them!!!
ReplyDeleteLove this!! You've thought of everything! Hopefully it helps motivate you :)
ReplyDeleteWhat a nice little update! The cap on the shelf is such a great addition.
ReplyDeleteLove this Jen! Ive been working out with someone on Youtube called Melissa Bender. Super awsome workouts and really quick too :) Can i ask when you workout Jen? I find early morning best for me as my kiddies are still little.
ReplyDeleteThanks Amanda! I will have to check her out! Right now, I end up working out later in the evening when my hubby is home, on the days I actually get motivated to do it. :) Hoping to switch it to during the day while they are at school however, just to give my body a typing break.

I love this organised corner it would certainly convince me to actually do some exercise once in a while. Unfortunately we don't have the room for a treadmill, but you've inspired me to think how we can make more use of the wii fit.
ReplyDeleteWe just got an elliptical and boy is exercise equipment hard to make pretty. But you TOTALLY did it! This is why you are the master Jen :)
ReplyDeleteWhat a great little exercise corner now!! I do have to admit, I was a little relieved to see some dust on the treadmill before it was re organised :) No matter how hard I try to keep my home clean and organised, there's always ONE corner somewhere with something that hasn't been done. Can't wait to see what sort of artwork you put up in the room too xxx
ReplyDeleteHaha! Although I love to clean and organized, we definitely have a few dusty corners around this house!
Deletexo!
Beautiful, thanks. I'm inspired :) I am loving you tube videos on my iPad, there are many 20 minute yoga ones on plum tv/yoga. A nice option to try...
ReplyDeleteAbsolutely! I have found a few on Netflix as well! Works out perfectly!
DeleteWould you please share where you got those drawers you keep your workout clothes in? In February we are doing a closet remodel and those are exactly what I need. Thanks
ReplyDeleteHi Jessica!
DeleteThey are part of the Elfa system from the Container Store. I believe they were initially intended for the pantry: http://www.containerstore.com/shop?productId=10018497&N=&Ntt=elfa+mesh+pantry
You can see all the details in this post: http://iheartorganizing.blogspot.com/2012/06/conquering-clothing-clutter-my-closet.html
Thank you!
Jen
It looks awesome! All my workout stuff is currently in a pile in the basement, so I should probably do something about that, haha. :)
ReplyDeleteWell, my fitness nook is anything but organized and inspiring since it is in my unfinished basement. I'm currently keeping my gear on top of the Christmas decorations bins that are sitting next to the treadmill. The one thing I do like though is that I have it facing the window, so I get to look out at the woods behind our house. The window also acts as sort of a mirror -- not so clear that I have to look at myself sweating to death, but enough to make sure I'm using good form and to make me feel like "Yes, I can do this!" ;) Love your space! I'll definitely use it for inspiration when we finish the basement someday!
ReplyDeleteSo jealous of the window! That is definitely something our nook is missing. Even if it could feel like I was outside would lend a little extra motivation for sure!
Deletexo!
Love how you put everything together in one neat place. This has inspired me to gather my workout gear and see what kind of solution I can come up with. FYI – Michael’s craft store has similar acrylic easels in their framing dept. if anyone is looking for one. There are two different sizes, and I think they are around $5-$10. I got the smaller one for my Kindle and it works great.
ReplyDeleteEverything you do looks great. I mean even the buttons on your treadmill coordinate to the color scheme.....mine is just----------gray! Sigh....everything I try to emulate falls flat in comparison- thanks for inspiring me however!
ReplyDeleteOh my goodness that is funny, I didn't even notice that. Definitely a happy coincidence! Love your attention to detail!
DeleteThank you for always inspiring me!! Love it!
ReplyDeleteLooking at what you did with your exercise space made me want to just jump on the treadmill :) This is so inspiring and motivating. Thank you for sharing your this.
ReplyDeleteJen, this looks amazing (as always)!! I would never have thought to put a bookshelf in front of the treadmill, but how brilliant is that? So function and pretty, as is everything you do. Love it!
ReplyDeleteHi
ReplyDeleteWhat kind of treadmill do you have and do you like it? I live in Wi too and this winter has been especially cold. Love what you did. Thanks for the inspiration.
Wow! what a nice space to work out in. I take for granted making spaces like this pretty.
ReplyDeleteLove those Target bins- did you just get them? Who are they by?! Great job as always!
ReplyDeleteHi Ashley!
DeleteYes, purchased them pretty recently. Here they are online: http://www.target.com/p/xhilaration-medium-lace-oval-bin-set-of-3-assorted-colors/-/A-14821354#prodSlot=medium_1_2&term=lace+basket
However, you can purchase them individually in the store.
xo!
Love the new look...I need to organize our workout space too...thanks for the inspiration
ReplyDeleteI have a treadmill in our workout room and had it facing the wall like you show but I had to turn it the other direction because facing the wall drove me crazy!
ReplyDeleteDo you read a book or something to distract you?
I listen to music or watch Hulu/Netflix on my iPad.

Seriously Jen?? Only YOU could turn a treadmill corner into a pretty, fun, and functional space! LOL

I bet you'll get some good runs in this week in that pretty space! As for tips, I have to change it up to keep myself motivated. I did P90X at home for awhile, but then missed having adult interaction since I also blog from home. Back in August, I started at my local Crossfit {even though I was scared to drink the kool-aid}. I've gained some muscle and feel better than I have in years! I do my best if I work out at 8:30 in the morning because I then have the rest of the day to work and do housework.
ReplyDeleteGo to toneitup.com and those two ladies are so inspiring! They also have a ton of youtube videos galore that get you sweating and toning in no time flat! Lots of great food/drink tips as well. Its also my goal this year to tone myself up and make more time for me - so I can be a better wife and mom!
ReplyDeleteWhat a great little space!
ReplyDeleteJust Love the efficient way you used the small space. In our home a small bedroom opened up when a kid moved out recently and we hung a TV on the wall and parked a 3 shelf plant stand to hold DVD player, basket of dvds and folder with routines and hand weights. A quilt rack holds exercise bands, etc. A weight bench and exercise bike are my other workout tools, and in the room is one wall of plastic drawers/adjustable wall shelving that hold all my sewing supplies, fabric, etc
ReplyDeleteI vary riding my exercise bike with DVD's on belly dancing, Yoga, Salsa, etc to change up what muscles are used and to keep me from being bored!
Hi Jen
ReplyDeleteThis isn't about the organizing, although I love it, but where is your headband from and does it stay on? During cross fit, I have only found one kind from target that works!
Thanks!
My friend has a whole line of "no slip" headbands. I bought one for my sister and she loves it. You can find them here: http://www.etsy.com/shop/slipnotheadware
Delete(sorry to hijack Jen's posts/comments, just a suggestion!) :)
Thank you!
DeleteIt does stay on, however, I can't remember exactly where I purchased it as it was so long ago. Maybe Target or Ulta?

This organization is great! It's awesome how a little change can make such a big difference. I hope your fitness resolutions are going well :)
ReplyDeleteSweet Spontaneity
What a great space! This would totally get me working out more! :)
ReplyDeleteI got back into exercising by setting myself the monthly challenge (in Dec!) to walk every day - started with 15 mins, and woke up 1 minute earlier every day to walk 1 minute further. The incremental change was harder to notice than the effort of waking up *that* much earlier (I start work at 7am!). Now I have the habit, I try to fit in a weekday walk every morning before work, but now I've settled on 30 mins every day, waking at 5.20am (changing time needed!) Best of luck!
ReplyDeleteThat looks great! You really turned a sad little corner into a pretty and functional space to workout. It makes me want to workout and I don't even run!
ReplyDeleteWhat a fabulous idea! If I had a space that looked like that I would be exercising all day long ;) Great work
ReplyDeleteBrooke x
I always find your posts so inspiring, and this one is no exception! I am currently working on an at home gym in our vacation home so I pinned a few images from your post to keep me inspired!

I love this! I primarily work out at home using Beachbody programs, and I coach others who are doing the same. This is just brilliant. I would love to share this with the people in my challenge groups as a possible solution. I have also found early mornings (5:00-5:30 start time) to be the key to my success in fitting in my exercise. That way I have time to get my to-do list (and blog reading) done before everyone else is up.

Wow Jen! You really are an organizing genius! Just yesterday, I was looking for an iPad stand and stressing because they are so expensive and then voila! I see your post with the plate stand! Great idea and awesome workout space!
ReplyDeleteThis looks amazing - so perfect and pretty for a boring and ugly treadmill - love it! x
ReplyDeleteThe transformation is so cute. I love it!
ReplyDeleteThat is so cute! Question though. Even with the iPad is it a little awkward that you are just staring at a blank wall? Do you ever think that you would hang a picture or some sort of inspirational quote in a frame?
ReplyDeleteJust wondering!

ReplyDeleteLove this space! do you mind telling me where you got the rug? I'm in the market for an embossed solid one and I love that one!

xo!
Um, I have no tips to offer. I'm lucky if I walk the dog for 15 mins a few times a week. :/
ReplyDeleteBut your little space is sure inspiring enough to use!!
LoVe iT!!! Due to my day job... I usually work out as soon as I get home from 5-6pm. But when I'm working at home, I definitely take the morning approach and do it before I start any other chore. Love the shelf idea and if I ever get a treadmill at home, I'm going to employ alot of your organizing tips here! Genius! Keep up the good work! Love your pretty blog and ideas!
ReplyDeleteIt is a lovely space!
ReplyDeleteI think you have sone such an amazing job with this space, il looks supergreat! Even though I do not have a treadmill I would love to have such a small bookshelf with all my exercise gear in!
ReplyDeleteI think you did a fantiastic job and its always easier to use a pretty and organized space upposed to having to tidy it every time before you use it :)
This is absolutely adorable! I can't wait to have a home of our own to use, for now I am just dreaming and renting ;)
ReplyDeleteOoh so pretty! I would want to work out just so I could spend time in that beautiful space! (I guess that's the point, huh? ;) I usually have some little workout buddies when I'm trying to exercise, so I don't know how effective my workouts actually are, lol. I do end up holding my two year old by the end of the work out most of the time, so that has to burn calories with the extra resistance, right?! Thanks for sharing this beautifully organized space with us, Jen! Have a wonderful week!
ReplyDelete~Abby =)
Great space!
ReplyDeleteWhere did you find the honeycomb vase? Love it! I always like to joke running around after my kids 9,6,3 is my cardio and my weightlifting ;)
ReplyDeleteIt was from Target a few seasons back, it also had a sweet little lid which I happened to drop and break :( I am guessing HomeGoods would be a great place to look as well.

Jen, this couldn't come at a more perfect time! After two pregnancies, and moving from a warm climate to a cold one, I was reorganizing my workout life just this week. I was looking for ideas for how to set up a corner of our living room for working out, and this is perfect! I think it's great that you have your workout clothes set apart...that would definitely inspire me to get up and go! Especially when I only have small chunks of time to workout while the baby is asleep. Thank you for this inspiration!
ReplyDeleteSarah @ www.marriageisnotforwimps.blogspot.com
I agree that balance is what everybody needs. I found it to be so difficult to find harmony in my soul and one of my friends advised me to redecorate my house. It really helped me a lot and now I can say tat I am very happy.
ReplyDeleteI use the workouts on benderfitness.com
ReplyDeleteShe has over 200 different workouts. Most are 15 minutes. No equipment needed. She has HIIT, yoga, etc. Add 15 minutes on the treadmill and you hit your 30. I feel so much more energized and since there is something new every day I am never bored.
Thank you for the tip! I will have to add that one to my list! Sounds perfect! xoxo!
DeleteOnly you could make a treadmill look chic! Amazing!
ReplyDeletewow, I love this corner.
ReplyDeleteOh, that's so smart and neat! I've always seen my treadmill as something which can't get prettier. But those pictures make me want to hop on that machine and work out! I love that idea with the iPad dock because watching while working out is the best thing about running at home! Also the details such as yoga mats and towels are great.
ReplyDeleteso inspirational! Love how you re-did the bookcase/shelves! Always love your posts!
ReplyDeleteMy bedroom suite has become a home gym to make room for our littlest one's nursery. My treadmill now sits in a spot behind the door that could really use this kind of attention. So many possibilities for turning an obtrusive negative into a this-can-so-work positive!
ReplyDeleteWhat a great idea! I love your workout conner.
ReplyDeleteLove this! We have a dressing room and can see space for something like this.
ReplyDeleteYou rock Jen! Organize away, I'll live vicariously through you this year. There's so much I want to accomplish, but I seem to be developing a bit of A.D.D. The snow is definately putting a damper on picking my training back up for the 5k in June. I work at home in front of the computer so I feel your pain. ...no literally I feel pain after sitting for 5 hours slumped over the keyboard, and most days when I get off I can't focus on anything. The optometrist says it's "getting older", bah humbug! I don't believe it! I think it has to do with the type of screens we stare at now. Enough of my rambling, Thanks for the inspirations. The only piece of equipment I own is an inverstion table, and wii fit board. ;)
ReplyDeleteLove the space:) so cheery and energizing for a workout! Do you mind me asking where you found your tote shown in the picture by the wardrobes? I have been looking for a carryall like that! Thanks
ReplyDeleteThank you! The tote was from zulily last year.

Hi there
ReplyDeleteGreat post - thanks for the inspiration! I'm just wondering if you'd have any ideas about where to put one of those large exercise balls (can't remember what they're called!). The kids keep stealing it and running it through the house and it ends up ALL OVER THE HOUSE!! I can't stand it!!
Thanks : )
I am a "it would be great if I could wake up early and get going, but it doesn't happen as often as I like" kinda girl as well. The trick that I have found that MAKES me exercise is that I put on my workout clothes first thing. It isn't so much that it inspires me, it just a constant remind "hey, go work out!" all day long until I actually do it!
ReplyDeleteThis has been on my "to-do" list for quite a while now. I have a small screen TV with DVD player and ROKU that sits on a cabinet to the right of the treadmill, but it's not very comfortable to run while looking to the right. I absolutely love the IKEA shelf holding your yoga mat! I am glad I waited on getting a floating shelf, and will now look for something similar to your idea. THANK YOU!
ReplyDelete"Back care kit?" Do tell!

DeleteEnjoying your year in review! I have been *cough* stalking *cough* I mean following your blog so closely lately that I was pleased to get a chance to read up on what I've missed. I am relieved to see that you can have a treadmill and it look cute in your home as well. I have been eyeing treadmills, but have always hated the thought of its ugliness in my house. ;) great job on the shelf, it looks super cute....maybe I'll start shopping around for a treadmill now.
ReplyDeleteDo you know where to get the shelf and brackets? It's such a great idea to keep the yoga mat out of the way.
DeleteHi Jen - I am moving into a new house and the room for the treadmill is exactly like your picture. Please share where did you get the wall mounted shelf that is holding the yoga mats. Thank you.
ReplyDeleteCongrats on your new home! The shelf and brackets are from IKEA a few years ago now. I can't seem to source the exact bracket any longer, but this one may also work in a similar fashion: http://www.ikea.com/us/en/catalog/products/30168724/
