Happy Halloween!!! I hope you are all having a spooky and fantastic Halloween! Today I am sharing my solution for the scariest place in the house, the front hall closet!
It seems like everything you don't want in the front closet ends up there and the things you do want in there, like your kids shoes and backpacks end up on the floor. Then there is the matter hats and gloves, scarves and reusable shopping bags. Some wire shelves, hooks and baskets turned our closet from spooky to serene.
First we installed the wire shelves for our shoes. I chose wire shelves because I wanted wet shoes to be able to have air circulate around them and dry out.
Another small investment was buying wood hangers. Coats are heavy {especially when your husband wears a XXL} so we invested in some big sturdy wood hangers that all match. They are functional and pretty!
Next we installed two wire baskets to hold all of the hats, gloves, leg warmers, boot inserts and everything else that comes with Canadian winters.
Above the coats was the perfect spot to hold seasonal items. In the winters we keep the sunscreen, swimming goggles, beach towels and other summer paraphernalia. The little chalkboard on the front makes it really easy to find what you are looking for. {Basket is from Michaels}
Next we installed two hooks on the back of the door. Hooks are our best friends. We are all way more likely to hang up our coats if there are hooks readily available! Which has inspired my new organizing mantra "when in doubt . . . install hooks".
I hope this helped you un spook your home a little bit. Have a fun and safe Halloween!!!
"I’m Ashli from Mini Manor Blog. I live in Big Beautiful British Columbia with my Husband Lee and our 5 lb yorkie Max. I have an organizers heart, I am a bin-aholic, and I’ve never met a wicker basket I didn’t love. During the summer I can be found lounging in the garden or at the gym . . . one of those was a lie. And in the last 5 years I’ve made more then 2000 cupcakes. I want to bake, eat and organize. Hand me some eggs, flour and an unorganized kitchen, that’s my idea of a great weekend, okay go ahead throw Ryan Gosling in there too."
Looks fantastic Ashli. Love the idea of the add on basket for shopping bags. I am always forgetting ours, unless they are already in the car!! Glad to see you back posting.
ReplyDeleteGreat Ideas! I desperately need to go through my office/coat closet and rearrange it. www.styleoyster.blogspot.com
ReplyDeleteIt looks great Ashli! What color are your Hunter boots? I am purchasing a pair, but I'm not sure what color to get.

ReplyDeletethanks for the tips Ashli!!

ReplyDeleteI love the hanging wire baskets. Can you tell us where you found them?
ReplyDeleteI really love the wall baskets, and would love to know where you purchased them!
ReplyDeleteThe wire baskets are from The Real Canadian superstore.

So cute! I love it! The next project on my list is the coat closet!
ReplyDeleteSeriously love the wire basket for the shopping bags. I have been struggling to find a solution for ours in our pantry, and I think this is it! Just ordered one online. Thanks!
ReplyDeleteWhat a great makeover! Usually I want to rip out wire shelves when I see them (we had them in all our closets when we moved in) but in this case they make a lot of sense. I really like the hanging baskets on the wall. Great job! Now I want to sort through all out coats - we have way too many!
ReplyDeleteGreat closet with many terrific ideas. We tend to like solid shelves for shoes. I don't want dirt etc. from the shoe above falling on or into the shoe below. The idea of using the wire shelves for airing out also has it's merits. Thanks for your sharing.
ReplyDeleteLove the closet, but where do you store your vacuum cleaner?
ReplyDeleteWe store it upstairs where 90% of our carpet is. :) we use a dry mop to clean our wood floors :).

Hi there, I found you from IHeart Organizing today. Timely article for me as we have drawn plans for our retirement house and I'm struggling over our entry hall closet. No kids anymore, and have a mudroom near the garage that we'll use often for most items. However, I put a small closet in my entry for a jacket, tennis shoes, keys, hats, etc. We go walking a lot and wanted to be able to grab what we needed if we went out the front door. Also a place for guest jackets. I'm trying to decide whether to put a door, like your closet, or leave it open with just hooks (no hangers), a shelf/basket for keys/hats, shoes on the floor. Oh and your great bag idea. Maybe wallpaper or stencil the inside to dress it up? Anyone have an opinion? Perhaps even if we keep it neat and tidy, it will still distract the eye from the otherwise long and hopefully uncluttered entry hall? Thanks in advance for your input.
ReplyDeleteGreat ideas, will be sure to try the hanging wire baskets nice touch Ashli...
ReplyDeleteI just organized our foyer closet 2 nights ago BOO but yay that it's finished :)
ReplyDeletewhat a clever idea using those wire shelves to store shoes....this is something i need to do to our own coat closet... thanks for the idea!!!
ReplyDeleteLove ur closet and its exactly the way I have been wanting it to be. Thrilled to see it for real. What did u use to install the wire mesh shelves? Did you use the support brace? I couldn't find it in the picture but it looks super neat.
