Colorful Craft Paint Organization

The organization bug has bit me again, and I had a little fun with it.  This time, I decided to tackle a craft paint situation.

I am a craft paint lover because for around $1 a tube, you get bold color that can cover just about any helpless object.  Vases, planters, Easter eggs, art.... I have been known to head to my craft paint bin frequently.  However, up until recently, I really struggled to store my collection.  The colors seem pretty enough to be on display, but I also want to control the clutter and keep them corralled.  Another goal was to ensure I wasn't doubling up on colors I already owned.

Once I found a container to store the paints {more on that in a moment}, I instantly realized that once the paints would be placed inside, I could no longer identify the color inside of the tubes.  I would be looking straight down onto the craft paints when opening the lid, and I wanted to be able to quickly identify the color and grab what I needed in a jiff.

So, I spun my wheels for a moment and decided to plop down in front of the TV, catch up on some Kardashians and get crafty with my paint organization.

It basically consisted of me using a pack of All Purpose Adhesive Labels I found at the Dollar Store, combined with a circle paper punch and some Q-Tips.  I punched the labels with the circle punch and painted each color of paint onto the circle which I then stuck to the lid.

You probably could just paint dots right onto the lids themselves, however, I am not sure how well the paint would stay, and the cray cray in me likes the nice perfect circles.

It is important to have fun when organizing.  Have I mentioned that before?  If not, make organizing fun.  Seriously, it is so much better if you do.

Once I finished labeling the bottles, I tucked them into the new storage box.

I found this glass terrarium from HomeGoods.  It was a crazy bright blue that made no sense in our home, but that wasn't anything a good ol' can of spray paint couldn't handle.

And here she is, all pretty and happy on the counter in my studio space.

By painting the dots on top of the paint containers, I can see all of my colors and grab what I need in the moment of a project.  I can even tell the sheen of the paint, as some are glossy, some are pearly and others are satin.  I give this project a nice big gold star!

These simple and fun projects are my favorite.  And organizing while catching up on bad TV receives a thumbs up as well!

What is your favorite show to watch while you get your organizing on?

  1. Great Idea Jen! I did something similar , I use one of my hubby's golf T's and added a dab of paint to the end and then putting onto the paint top to make a "perfect" (lol) circle, then after that was done I arranged all of e paints onto a leftover spice tier organizer!

  5. Such a pretty box! Looks like a perfect fit. But what about when you have to add more pretty colored paint to your collection? I guess that's just another excuse to do another organization box!

    1. Hi Miranda!

I try to only purchase to my storage capacity, so as of right now, now more craft paint for me ;) But I do have a great variety of colors to work with and I even have a few duplicates that I could probably combine should I need to snag that oh so perfect color.

      xo!

  6. I have mine in an old wooden Coke crate hung on the wall! They go in sideways and I can see the bottoms of all the paints and can quickly identify the color! Plus it makes beautiful wall art in my craft room! :O)

    1. Thank you! I have had the punch for years and years, but they sell them at most craft and scrapbooking stores. The one I used for this project is 3/4".

  10. Love it! I have a very similar terrarium that I got from Joss & Main. I just took it out of the box yesterday and I have been pondering what to do with it, this could give me some ideas!

  12. LOVE IT! I am so glad you bought that hideous blue terrarium...I knew you would be able to do something awesome with it. The gold finish against your gray walls is drool-worthy!!! I will be keeping my eye out at HomeGoods for another one, so I can steal this idea :)

  13. Super creative way to store your paint! I never would have thought to use that had I seen it in the store. Looks great, especially since they fit perfectly without having to stack them.

  14. You are so clever with all your colorful organization! Watching the Kardashians is a guilty pleasure of mine. My husband can't stand more than a few minutes of it, but I keep watching, like a bad car wreck or something.

  20. Just a thought, but couldn't you have stored the bottles upside down and saved yourself a lot of trouble :)

    1. Potentially - however, I wouldn't have liked how that looked. And this way I can see the sheen of the paint as well, since I have a few of the same colors in different sheens.

  21. I don't know what I love more - the gorgeous (and practical) rainbow at the end, or the fact that you watched the Kardashians while doing it! :)

  22. I actually did this exact thing, except I painted the color right on top of the lid. It's stayed so far, but of course they're not perfect circles like yours. :)

  23. H Rachael!

I use the Martha Stewart craft paints from Michaels. I love they come in a variety of colors and finishes. You can also find some that cover different finishes, such as glass.
