Ashli from Mini Manor Blog is always thinking up quick and creative organizing solutions that anyone can use and enjoy, and today is no exception. It's an office in a box! {and nothing more as a certain song may suggest....}
We have a home office at our house. It looks nice and it functions well . . . but what it does really well is take up a TON of space!
In fact as I write this I'm sitting on the couch, a mere 5 feet from our home office.
Not every home has room for a large dedicated home office, not everyone wants a home office. But regardless of your feelings on the subject, there are still some office related items you'll need to keep handy.
Which Brings me to "Office in a Box".
I choose a wicker basket with a lid. The lid can hid all of the ugly. Aside from the box you'll need an in expensive plastic file holder, and a small container for pencils and pens {it could even be a tin can}. Then anything else you'll need on a regular basis. If you'll use this box to pay bills you might want to add your cheque book and maybe a small calendar. Another idea would be to keep a small collection of blank cards for birthdays and thank yous {stamps might also be a good idea}.
This box is small only about 16" wide by 11" deep, but I loved that it would look right at home in your living room, dining room, anywhere you want to keep your office box.
Who knew you could get an entire home office in 176 square inches? :)
"I’m Ashli from Mini Manor Blog.
I live in Big Beautiful British Columbia with my Husband Lee and our 5
lb yorkie Max. I have an organizers heart, I am a bin-aholic, and I’ve
never met a wicker basket I didn’t love. During the summer I can be
found lounging in the garden or at the gym . . . one of those was a
lie. And in the last 5 years I’ve made more then 2000 cupcakes. I want
to bake, eat and organize. Hand me some eggs, flour and an unorganized
kitchen, that’s my idea of a great weekend, okay go ahead throw Ryan
Gosling in there too."

I've been really struggling with what to do with all my paperwork lately, and this idea is just absolutely PERFECT. I will keep my eye out for a suitable box/basket!

I love it, Ashli. Even if you do have a dedicated home office, this is a neat little idea for a "bill paying" box.
ReplyDeleteMust ask where did you get the basket and the clear file folder? Love those baskets -- they look like seagrass?
-Debra
Thank you!! The basket is from Homegoods and the clear box is from dollar tree. But I believe the container store has them as well.
DeleteHope that helps
Ashli
There should be a love button, because I love this idea so much! Clean, tidy and put away.
ReplyDeleteluv it! as usual - superb idea!! this also allows us to "grab and go" if we know we have things to do and some time to kill in the car. (school pick up line, early to a meeting, etc)
ReplyDeleteGreat idea! I love the idea of being able to carry it wherever you want to sit and have a quiet productive moment. Whether it be the sofa in the living room, or the bed in the master, it can come along!
ReplyDeleteI love this!
ReplyDeleteWe live in a tiny apartment and were thinking about putting up a bunch of shelves to house all of our office supplies- but I think this might be more practical =)
Thanks for sharing!
Love the office in a box! We live in less that 1000 sq ft and this seems like the perfect solution.
ReplyDeleteOh my, this is wonderful! I recently transitioned to working from home 90% of the time from a full-time in the office job, so this is perfect - and I've got just the nook for it. :)
ReplyDeleteThanks for sharing such a great idea!
Wow! This is such a great idea! Especially for those of us who live in tiny apartments, and don't have room for an office. Thanks so much for sharing this!

I've been looking for a similar basket. Where did you get yours?
ReplyDeleteIt is from Homegoods!!:)

Great idea! I keep our home office in a kitchen cupboard but it falls everywhere when I get it out. This is a great idea to keep it contained in the cupboard and it will be much easier getting everything out when I need it. Thanks for the idea!
ReplyDeleteOk this is brilliant. We just moved, and the location that will work for our full home office is upstairs. However sometimes I really prefer to be able to plop on the couch in the evenings and pay bills, do filing, etc. I'm going to try this, and keep the box located in the office and just tote it when I want to work elsewhere. So glad you shared this!
ReplyDeleteI have been looking for a basket with a lid! Please tell me where to buy! Pretty, pretty, please!
ReplyDeleteHi Janet
DeleteItbis from Honegoods.
Hope that helps.
Ashli
This is so what I need! I am always sad when a home office post comes up, because I can never participate without a desk of my own. However, this one is right up my alley! Perfect!
ReplyDeleteYes, please, please tell us where you found the basket! Thank you in advance!
ReplyDeleteThis organizing tip is perfect! I am currently looking for a way to better organize all my paper work (student loans, car loans, billing statements, etc) but still have it looking cute and easily accessible. I will post a before and after picture and link your blog for the great tip! Keep an eye out for the post at

I never understood the whole room dedicated to an office. We have the room, however I can't see wasting it on office supplies. Unless I worked from home, it seems like a waste of space. I have something like this and I love it. Most of my files are on my computer and backed up. Paper files are in one small filing cabinet and labeled. This idea has worked for me for so long. Love the way you put yours together!
ReplyDeleteThis post, right here, is EXACTLY what I needed. I really need a home office for home and my small business, but there is no room at all for it. Thank you, thank you for sharing her ideas with us today. You just made my day!
ReplyDeleteI literally just created something similar- except my paperwork/files are in a 1.5" folder, but I love the idea of the file box because you can see everything. I have envelopes, receipt holder, calendar, address book & card holder in my "box." It really helps me contain the amazing clutter that comes through here. And the items I don't need often are in an actual file box in the closet. Great idea!
ReplyDeleteLove this idea! Right now all our travel files are in a plastic file bin on the kitchen desk...this would be a bit prettier.
ReplyDeleteLove this idea of an office in a box! My husband and I each have our own offices, but this is likely to change once we have kids. I will have to keep this in mind for our Den where all of our store receipts, etc usually end up. I would also love to find out where Ashli got her baskets - I hope she bought these in Canada as many US products are often hard to find/order in Canada!

I LOVE this! You can then transfer your papers to filing cabinets once they have been processed.
ReplyDeleteLove this idea! But now I have that song stuck in my head!
ReplyDeleteOh thank you! I needed this post today. My husband just commandeered my "office" to house his newest hobby. Trains. We are having out new living room furniture delivered tomorrow which will provide the perfect place(s) to store my office boxes. I'm an up an coming real estate agent so I need to have my files handy, but I don't want them on display.
ReplyDeleteI just got rid of a ton of office supplies because I did not have any space to store them. I saved one small file box in which I keep blank printer paper, envelopes, stapler, and clips. I have a separate filing box for papers I must keep. (I scanned over 4000 documents in the downsizing process.) I have a box for the few paper bills I am still receiving- after being paid I scan and then shred them. Pens, pencils, small tools, etc... go into a vase on my work table.
ReplyDeleteWhich leaves me with a mid-sized home office printer/scanner and my tiny shredder. Currently those have no permanent home- but I am still unpacking.
What a wonderful solution! Since I live in an RV, I am always trying to find inventive ways to save space. This is great! Thanks for sharing!
ReplyDeleteLove this! I'm always trying to find ways to organize and consolidate! This hits the spot! I may just have to invest in a few of these tools =)
ReplyDeleteOK, it's awesome. Now, Please share- where did you get the beautiful basket & the clear file box? This is so perfect!
ReplyDeleteThis is brilliant. For 12 years, my "office supplies" consist of a cluttered flatware drawer filled with all this stuff. Also, my stamps and envelopes are in my pantry, which is valuable space! This will get done this weekend.... oh I can't wait!
ReplyDeleteThat is so lovely and perfect. It makes me happy to see such organization!
ReplyDeleteI love seeing creative ideas for small homes! My office-in-a-box would have to be up high so no little fingers could get into it! ;) Thanks for the inspiration!
ReplyDelete~Abby =)
Love this idea! Since I've taken over our study desk iwth my sewing shenanigans we need a small office solution! I think I'll give this a go! :)
ReplyDeleteThis is a great idea, I can't believe I never thought of it! Filing is so much more fun when you can do it on the couch. Plus it's perfect for my little old house!
ReplyDeleteWhere can I find a chalk pen? No luck at the Container Store or Office Depot.
ReplyDeleteTry Amazon. I ordered one from there in the past. I also believe Jen has found them at Michaels. I am not sure of the dept
DeleteThanks!
DeleteSuch a gorgeous and original idea Ashli.
ReplyDeleteI think as we gain more space in our homes, we accumulate so much stuff to fill the empty space. Or if we're in small spaces we think we can't do things because of the lack of room.
But ideas like this show how there are often fabulous ways to think outside the square!
I will be stopping to The Dollar Tree to look for that clear box. Did you make the file dividers or did they come with the box?
ReplyDeleteWow, what a great idea! Thanks for the idea!
ReplyDeleteYes! I'd love to know where the items were found--the baskets and file box. Thanks!
ReplyDeleteI love this idea. Did you get the basket recently from HomeGoods? I was there today and didn't see anything similar. In fact, they were restocking items for Spring, so if it was a Fall item it may no longer be available.
ReplyDeleteHow convenient!! I've been trying to find a solution to compact our office supplies into 1 location for bill paying, so this may work!
ReplyDeleteWhat a cute idea and the box is just perfect! So funny Jen's intro to the post! :)
ReplyDeleteThis is really a great idea. It is convenient and space-saving.
ReplyDeleteThat is a beautiful billing box neatly placed in your office. Thank you for the idea.
ReplyDeleteI was amazed when I put bills in my grandfather's cheese box from his country store how much that corralled so much of the papers that come through the mail. I think I need to have another one for the extras. The cheese box is too small but I just can't give it up. It will lower my frustration level too as my desk seems to attract my middle school girls for all their school stuff for homework and projects. Thanks for the idea.
