74 Reader Space: Secret Storage

When it comes to problem solving and organizing small spaces, sometimes a little creativeness is in order.  It means really utilizing every square inch of space and thinking up ideas that are completely outside of the typical box.  That is exactly what Mallory did and the outcome is AMAZING!

We love our kitchen since we've given it a fun makeover. Our totally tiny kitchen does a fine job suiting our needs...mostly... One problem I've run into with a small space is storage space.  We only have 3 upper cabinets and two lower cabinets.  Once I put my cookware and cleaning supplies in the lower cabinets and dishes in the uppers, I was about out of space! I had to get a little creative and maximize the empty space hiding in the room since we're lacking a pantry and our cabinets were about full. However, our kitchen had about a 6" opening between our wall and the refrigerator.  So, I headed out to Home Depot and picked up the boards and supplies I needed. This rolling storage cabinet is mostly built with 1x4 boards. I bought the pre-primed pine boards {say that 5 times fast!} and the great guys at Home Depot cut them for me for no charge.  I attached the beadboard backing, casters and a handle and that was pretty much it! I also added wooden dowels to the front of each shelf so we didn't have any run away cans! I've had it built and organized for about a week and it has made a HUGE impact in our family.  I have been able to keep the other cabinets organized and uncluttered, I actually know what food I have! I've even been cooking and baking more often and enjoying it this week. It's amazing what a little clutter-free organization can do especially in a small space!

Be ready to be thrilled!

Here is Mallory's kitchen:

She has very limited space to work with, but with her genius thinking, she created oodles of storage!

Can you believe it?!  By building a cabinet on wheels, she is able to expand her kitchen storage by the boatloads!

  • Because it's absolutely genius.  Such an itty bitty space in her kitchen {only 6"!} and look at how much storage she gained!
  • She made it herself to keep it custom for her space and to save some moolah!
  • She painted the inside with a WOW of chevron!  You totally wouldn't expect it, but it really takes the project to the next level.
  • The cabinet is on casters which makes it easy to pull out, even with heavy jars and cans being stored inside.
  • It is unexpected.
  • It is just one big happy surprise.  It tucks away discretely, but when I saw it pulled out with all those jars and cans and that pretty background, it left a giant permagrin plastered on my face.  Love.

You friends are seriously amazing.  Thank you to Mallory for submitting her awesome secret storage solution!  You can see her tutorial here and take a moment to check out the rest of her lovely home here.  She has really unique and brilliant style!

Who else literally said, "WOW!" out loud when they saw this?  How do you get creative in your itty bitty spaces with clever storage solutions?

  3. This is just amazing! I definitely need to add 'get good at woodwork' to my life skills list. I am trying to sort out storage in our front room at the moment but I think making storage on wheels might be beyond me... ;)

  4. I am hoping the items won't get too hot/warm from being by the fridge. Other than that, this looks great!

    1. Hi Anonymous! The side of my fridge does not get warm at all. The outside stays very cool so we weren't worried about the cans! :) thanks!

    2. Love this idea too. I had the same question as anonymous. Thanks for answering. My refrigerator looks about like yours. I would think that one side may be warmer then the other depending on what side the motor is on. I will have to check mine and see. Thanks for the idea.

  13. For those who may not want to build the whole thing themselves (and have a smidge more room, Ikeahackers has a post where someone created a similar setup out of the Kilby bookcase: http://www.ikeahackers.net/2012/03/kilby-goes-for-roll.html

  15. How innovative! I would never have thought of that for such a slim space, well done. I am now scanning all the nooks in my kitchen to see where I could squeeze in one of these! Just one question for Mallory, I wondered if it could topple over if pulled too far, or is it secured somehow? Thanks.

  16. Wow, indeed! I love this so much I'm wishing I had a gap next to my fridge! LOVE the Chevron. Forgive me for being a Nervous Nelly but if someone with small children is building one of these, perhaps a long tether or two from the back of the unit to the wall might be a good idea.

    1. I have small kids who would have a field day pulling this thing out and squashing siblings :) I was thinking the same thing a string tether to the wall or even the fridge to make certain it can't be pulled out the entire way and knocked over.
Or some sort of bar that the back caster can't go past as a stopper? Love the idea I wish I'd found it sooner! I have such a space and in this kitchen I NEED storage but alas we are moving next month so too late for here... Maybe the new house hmmmm....

    1. Hi Rachelle!

No, it does not affect how the fridge opes at all. Doesn't even touch it. Thanks so much for your question!

    3. Hi ladies, its hard to tell from the photos but there is a wall behind that supports the back. You could put a stopper on the ground or tether the back so you do not pull it out too far by accident. I do not have something to stop it since I am used to how far I need to pull it out and the wall supports it quite well when it is pulled out. I have children at home and they cannot reach the handle nor pull it out due to the weight of it but you could absolutely incorporate something to prevent it from being pulled out to far. It's been nearly a year and we have had no issues.

Thank you so much for your questions!

  37. Love this idea. I have power tools and know that I could build this for my kitchen. I have cabinets but they are loaded with pots, pans, cans...etc. I could actually squeeze 8-12" between my fridge and the wall...I have a plastic shelving unit which holds around 200 cookbooks on the other side. Wonder if I could use this somehow to put my canning jars in to keep them more organized? Hmmm...time will tell.

  38. I can't figure out how it stays balanced. Isn't it top heavy and likely to fall over?

  39. I definitely want to tackle this in my kitchen, but my fiancee is reluctant. he is worried that it will wobble or tip over when pulled out...any suggestions?

  40. My husband built me one yesterday and I love it. It can't be pulled completely out from beside of the frig cause it will not stand up alone. Did he not place the wheels on correctly or is that normal? But love the concept. Thanks for sharing.

  41. I did this very same thing using a counter height book case. It just happened that it was already flush in height and depth with my counters. It was a bookcase I already had, I bought casters and a drawer pull at the dollar store. It works great, takes up little room and blends right in with my cabinets. People rarely notice it until I pull it out.

  45. At only 6" wide are there any issues of falling over when pulled into open space? Or is it always recessed a little between the wall and fridge?

    1. Hi!

Yes, it is always partially supported between the wall and the fridge!

    2. Hello!

Yes, it is always supported by the wall or fridge. We have not had any issues but you could absolutely add a tether, wall rollers or some sort of stopper to prevent it from being rolled out too far.

      Thanks so much,

      Mallory @ Classy Clutter

    2. Hello!

Thanks for your question and yes, its been asked a lot. The way my kitchen is set up, the wall and fridge support it quite well. If it is pulled out all the way, it could absolutely tip over, however, I have it set up to where I don't need it all the way out to reach all of the food inside. The narrow wall behind it supports it really well but it is NOT made to be a free standing cabinet. The dimensions will not allow for it to stand on its own unless it was tethered or had a kick stand of some sort. You could definitely add something but we have not had any issues in our home and we have had it for nearly a year. Good luck and if you have any questions, be sure to ask! I can be reached at classyclutter4@gmail.com

  47. My husband built this and attached large drawer rollers to the wall so there would be no chance of it falling over. it rolls in and out just like a drawer would.

  50. This cabinet on wheels is an amazing idea indeed! There are plenty of narrow under or non utilized spaces in between cabinets and the refrigerator that can be turned into this extra set of storage space! However, I think it does need some expertise and good workmanship in order for the cabinet on wheels to function properly. Otherwise, all your items might just collapse into a pile of mess because you need to have a certain amount of mass to accommodate the weight of the jars that you are going to place on the shelves.

  51. Would 2 casters, side by side, give it more stability? I was thinking of making one that is about 8 inches wide.
