So, when I last updated, it was looking like this:
Pretty blank slate.
My dream bedding went on sale...
And I begged and pleaded with the hubs to let me have a chandelier instead of a ceiling fan. It was days and days of me being annoying until he couldn't take it anymore...
I instantly fell in love with the color of the grellow bedding against the wall color {Behr's Frozen Pond}. It was a match made in bedroom heaven.
But what to do with that giant wall behind the bed? It spoke to me. It told me that I should add some decorative moulding. So I listened.
However, our bedroom is a bit obnoxious {for lack of a better word}. It has a ledge wall on the left side, and a supporting beam to the right. So we couldn't just do even rectangle panels. We had to get a bit fancy. I did a quick mock-up before we got started, so we were both on the same page:
As I have mentioned before, we project a lot at night when the kiddos are in bed. How lucky are we that they can sleep through compressors and air nailers?
We picked up 10 pieces of 8ft x 1 1/8 x 7/16 in polymer cap moulding from Home Depot.
We drew out a plan on a piece of paper and wrote down all of the measurements. We centered the bed. Then measured out from there. One large panel, two smaller on each side to frame the night stands.
Bryan cut down all of the 90 degree corners based on our measurements.
Then, used a level and actually drew pencil lines right on the wall, so he knew right where he would be nailing in the moulding.
He also used the level while nailing the moulding. Just to make sure it was all nice and straight.
Over halfway done! I was loving it!!!
Through the special powers of the internet, we got it all done, just like that! {Oh, my husband wishes that was true!}
Once all of the moulding was in place, we just used some white painters caulk to fill in all of the nail holes, just like we did when we painted the trim in our upper level. Because this trim was a polymer finish, we didn't need to paint a thing. The caulk was the finishing touch.
So we moved back all of our belongings, I stole the sunburst mirror from our living room, we hung it and went to sleep feeling like we were just upgraded at a fancy pants hotel.
Waking up to this...
Because we didn't use one piece of moulding, the total cost for the trim was only $27. Yep, a 27 dollar wall treatment that makes all the difference in the space. Love.
Is this a happy before and after story?
I like shots that show progression. They make me giddy!
It's getting there! Still things to do, like add an area rug, dress up the bedding a bit more, add window treatments and address the completely empty wall on the opposite end of the bed, but this was HUGE progress for the space. Progress that I am loving!
Who else loves the power of some pretty moulding? Anyone been DIYing some fabulously inexpensive wall treatments? Share your stories and links please!
It looks fantastic!!! I love it!! =)
ReplyDeleteJulie
That looks incredible!!! I love it -- and love that you guys work on projects together! Lucky duck!
ReplyDeleteLooks great. Where is the chandelier from?
ReplyDeleteHi Kerry - the chandelier is from IKEA: http://www.ikea.com/us/en/catalog/products/90098200/
Deletexoxo,
Jen
I can't believe the price of that chandelier! We were just looking at a very similar one at Lowes that was triple the price! I always forget to check IKEA for light fixtures! Good thing I didn't buy it yet ;)
Deletelooks wonderful. You have such talent. Where is the hand sculpture from on your night stand?
ReplyDeleteHi Nicole!
DeleteThank you! The hand is from Urban Outfitters: http://www.urbanoutfitters.com/urban/catalog/productdetail.jsp?id=22857791&color=010&color=010&itemdescription=true&navAction=jump&search=true&isProduct=true&parentid=SEARCH+RESULTS

Jen
I love your bedframe. Where did you get it; if you don't mind?
ReplyDeleteThanks! Stephanie
Hi Stephanie!
DeleteI found it a few years back at an Ashley Furniture Homestore. I looked around online for you but I don't see it there any longer.
xoxo!
Jen
Looks great !! You inspire me to do something with the mess that I call a Master Bedroom :)
ReplyDeleteSo pretty! Where did you get the sheets from?
ReplyDeleteHi Lisa!
DeleteLOVE our sheets, they were a HomeGoods find.
xoxo,
Jen
Looks gorgeous!!!!! What a difference some trim can make! Love it!!!
ReplyDeleteThat is beautiful! And I loved the joke about the instant magic of internet versus the hard work of humans!
ReplyDeleteThat looks amazing! I cannot believe what a difference the molding makes. Your bedroom is looking lovely. :)
ReplyDeleteSo beautiful. What a difference the moulding made. I would love to replace my ceiling fan with a chandalier but no luck so far with the hubby. Maybe showing him your room will help!!! Thanks for sharing and your daily inspiration.
ReplyDeleteBelieve me, the loss of the ceiling fan still keeps me up at night, and I think will throug the summer, when I will miss it the most. If you really want it out, do what Jen did and catch him at a weak moment! :) Bryan
Deletethat's what table top and floor fans are for! The cylindar fans are amazing!
DeleteI bet those cuts were tedious, but I sure was worth it! Look at how beautiful it turned out!
ReplyDeleteJen, your bedroom is looking oh so glamorous! Good for you!
I absolutely love it! And, the duvet cover is so awesome. I have never thought about doing something like that with my walls, but I might just think about it now. Your husband is awesome too. It seems like he is always up for helping you with a project. Still working on my husband in that area, but he is getting better. Have a wonderful weekend!

Yep, I am a REALLY lucky lady. I made a deal no more than one or two projects per week and that seemed fair to him. He doesn't always do it with a giant permagrin, but he does it, and I adore him to pieces for it. <3
Deletexoxo!
Jen
Wow! That's gorgeous! Again, something I wouldn't have thought of doing but now will. I love all the inspiration I get from your blog!
ReplyDeleteThat looks spectacular! I love that striped bedding too and didn't realise it was on sale. Some online shopping coming my way...
ReplyDeleteThis looks fabulous, Jen!!!
ReplyDeleteEeep! I don't think I've ever commented before, but this is bringing me out of the shadows with its amazeballsness. I LOVE it!! Great job. Also...I am a total nerd about office supplies, too. Adore the new Martha ones from yesterday. Great finds!!!!
ReplyDeleteI totally just giggled out loud! <3
Deletexoxo!
Jen
Wow... LOVE IT!!!!!! Need to find me a handy man hubs too!! :)
ReplyDeleteI love that molding, Jenn!!! What a huge difference a small project can make!!! wowzers!!
ReplyDeleteLove it! And I'm excited you were finally able to convince Bryan to install decorative molding!! Wahoo! Bryan, if you're reading this, GREAT WORK!
ReplyDeleteThanks Amanda! Once I got my big boy pants on and stopped grumbling, it really went pretty quick and easy. Thanks for the kudos! (I love how I get all the accolades for doing it when she comes up with all the great ideas...)
DeleteLooks great! I've been working on a large wall in our living room and am slowly posting updates as I make progress - http://gabrielsgoodtidings.blogspot.com/2012/02/spray-painting-tip-tin-foil.html and http://gabrielsgoodtidings.blogspot.com/2012/02/wine-cork-initial.html
ReplyDeleteWOW...Amazing! I love how small project can make such a different. Also, I've mentioned your blog on my post, hope you don't mind. Thanks!
ReplyDeleteso, so pretty. Maybe that's what I need to think about for my bedroom wall. I don't have anything above the bed and we have 10' ceilings, so it's just a huge blank wall for now! I need to do something and this just might work! Thanks!
ReplyDeleteBeautiful!!!
ReplyDeleteWow it is gorgeous!
ReplyDeleteYour master bedroom looks like a chic hotel! I love it!
ReplyDeleteLOVE. I'd like to fall asleep there right now.... zzzzzz
ReplyDeleteoh wow, i really do love it!!!
ReplyDeleteLove it! It's amazing how the small detail of the molding adds soo much! Question...where did you get your bed frame/headboard from? I love it & we're looking for one for our downstairs guest bedroom! Heidi Rew from PartiesforPennies.blogspot.com
ReplyDeleteThank you!
DeleteIt was from Ashley Furniture Homestore a few years back. I don't see it on their website any longer.
xoxo!
Jen
OMG Jen it's gorgeous!!! You might have just given me an idea for my master bedroom. Do you think something like this could balance out a room? We have one window all the way to the right of our bed. The bed is centered on the whole wall, but I have been trying to figure out how to balance out this wall. Would you do the same moulding if you had a window over your right side nightstand? I think I have to go and play around with the computer now and see if it might look good in our master BR. Thanks for the inspiration Jen. I love all the work you have been doing to your home. :)
ReplyDeleteI would love to know your opinion as well. I have two long walls in my bedroom. One has a window, but mine is to the far right of the nightstand-- I probably have about a foot from the nightstand to the window and then the other side has a door, so would it work? I just love it and then I was thinking about painting the inside a darker/lighter shade of the paint. I'd love to hear your opinion!
DeleteThanks!
It's so hard to say without seeing it. Feel free to email me a picture of the full wall and I can try and pop some "pretend" molding into the picture like I did for ours. That's how I knew which pattern to do, and what would work/look well in our space. It's a pretty permanent update, so seeing it first helps! :)
Deletexoxo,
Jen
Incredible!!! I love everything about it!~
ReplyDeleteWhen did you buy the duvet and shams? They are back to regular price now, bummer :(
ReplyDeleteI purchased them before Christmas but I signed up for West Elm emails and get notified when they have sales all the time, they put their bedding and bath items on sale frequently so maybe getting on their mailing list will help! :) Or you could just stalk the page like I did at first, lol.
Deletexoxo,
Jen
I am so impressed and a little envious that you can get your husband to do everything you need. My husband is so exhausted when he gets home from work and he uses that as an excuse not to do all of my " honey please do's" on my getting longer by the eye roll list.Your house looks amazing, your family is breathtaking and you are such an inspiration I talk about you when I'm talking to friends, family, husband and it's getting a little nauseating. My husband thinks I have a girl crush on you. I think he is right, but not in that way you know what I mean. You are just amazing.Take care, Beth
ReplyDeleteI hear ya girl. My hubs definitely needs his "time" in the evenings. I think it helps that I am blogging for a living now and he really supports me following my dreams and knows that projects are quality time together.
DeleteYour comments are so sweet! <3
xoxo,
Jen
Beautiful! It's so simple and fresh!
ReplyDeleteLove it! Fabulous work! It absolutely "makes" the space. One question though....Can you show a closer photo of how you store your earrings? :)
ReplyDeleteHi Jill!
DeleteHere is a link to my earring project - http://iheartorganizing.blogspot.com/2011/02/iheart-valentines-day-and-easy-diy.html
Right now it's just propped on our dresser.

Jen
Fabulous!!!
ReplyDeleteI never would have thought about molding around the big wall. The rooms in my house are kind of weird too. Like for example, my living room only has 2 walls that I can really use. (the third has a window and the other is the stairs) I wish we lived closer so you could come and give me some ideas!! :)
ReplyDeleteSimply amazing.
ReplyDeleteThe molding looks great! You've got me thinking about whether i could do something like that in our bedroom...it's a little "blah" right now...
ReplyDeleteSuch a difference, It turned out great
ReplyDeleteHi i’m Heather! I have a question for you! Please email me :)
ReplyDeleteHeatherVonSJ[at]gmail[dot]com
wow! So Beautiful!
ReplyDeletei'm speechless. literally. L O V E.
ReplyDeletejen, it looks amazing! job well done!!
ReplyDeleteThis looks great! We dressed up our upper kitchen cabinets with molding, and the difference it made was huge.
ReplyDeleteThe molding is beautiful. You are a wonderful decorator. I love your headboard. Can you do a how to make a headboard tutorial?
ReplyDeleteThe bed is actually from Ashley Furniture Homestores a few years back. I am working on DIYing some headboards for the kids however, so stay tuned for those details.
Deletexoxo!
Jen
Just... Wow! The color on the wall? It looks different in each picture. Is it a turquoise blue, a gray blue, a gray?
ReplyDeleteSo, you guys don't watch TV at night? You're not hooked on any shows?
DVR! Best invention ever... Modern Family, Glee, Gray's and anything HGTV are some of Jen's guilty pleasures. For me, anything on History Channel! Because as Jen says... I'm a nerd.
DeleteThe wall color is Behr's Frozen Pond. It looks different in different lighting and unfortunately, the photos above were all taken at different times of the day. It's really a gray blue green color. I really really love it.
Deletexoxo!
Jen
Bryan, my husband also watches the History Channel, so you are not the only nerd. I watch it too... when I want to fall asleep. : )
DeleteLove it all so much!!! I am dying to get some new bedding. Where is the best place to get affordable and quality bedding?
ReplyDeleteI have found that the best bedding I have ever purchased was also the most expensive {pottery barn}. However, I have had really really good luck with less expensive options from Target and West Elm as well. Target really has great selections at wonderful prices. I have purchased two duvets from Ikea and they both are awful after one wash, totally got what I paid for.
Deletexoxo,
Jen
WOW!!! Your rocked that room, Jen! I thought it was pretty awesome before but you knocked it outta the ballpark! It's exciting to see the striped bedding in a real bedroom. Found similar bedding and wasn't sure if it'd look sophisticated and grown up...here's the proof. Thanks! :-)
ReplyDeleteLove your beautiful master bedroom! It makes such a difference to invest a little time and money into making it somewhat of a retreat... especially when you have sleeping babies down the hall. I am loving everything that you have done. You are very talented in your design. Just wondering if that is a body pillow on your bed with a beautiful cover? Ever since having my babies, I am still hooked on sleeping with my body pillow, but it is not the most aesthetically pleasing item. Would love to know where you got it (if that is what I think it is). Thank you!
ReplyDeleteIt was actually part of Target's "kissing pleats" line from awhile back. It was about $20 and I just use it as a pretty pillow when I make the bed, I don't think it would last long if I were to snuggle with it every night.
Deletexoxo!
Jen
OMG! It looks so AMAZING!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
ReplyDeleteThe molding is amazing. It changed the whole look of the room that is amazing to me. Great job!!
ReplyDeleteLOVE LOVE LOVE IT!!!
ReplyDeleteIsn't it amazing the difference moulding makes. Your master looks so wonderful - and I love all the touches you have added. Great job!!
ReplyDeleteCome on. That is amazing. $27 made a major difference. It is definitely like a fancy pants hotel. I might be jumping on that bandwagon. Hmmm. Really love the wall color as well. So pretty.
ReplyDeleteLove the Chandelier. I saw that you mentioned it came from Ikea. Did you get the chandelier shades from Ikea also? I have been looking for shades and have had difficulty finding some that are inexpensive. Did not see any from Ikea online.
ReplyDeleteIt's such a long story, but we are doing some light swapping around the house. I had found some chandelier shades on ebay a little over a year ago but they weren't "clip on" shades. And they didn't fit on the Ikea chandelier. I am planning on moving our kitchen drum pendant to my studio office space so we replaced it with a chandelier from Home Depot. I used the ebay shades on the Home Depot chandelier and popped the clip on shades from the Home Depot chandelier onto the Ikea chandelier.
DeleteWow, sorry. Long story short, I used shades that came with another chandelier {the entire chandlier with shades only cost $79 from Home Depot which was almost as much as five chandelier shades anywhere I have seen!}
xoxo,
Jen
This turned out AMAZING! Everything you do looks so great. I want to be you when I grow up! = ) Congrats!
ReplyDeleteonce again I am inspired :) your blog makes me happy :)
ReplyDeleteGorgeous and I may copy this idea -- unless I can find affordable grasscloth wallpaper... I feel motivated to make my master bedroom nice again! Thanks!
ReplyDeleteOMWord -- fabulousness!! Job well done by both of you!
ReplyDeleteI love it. Can you tell us where you got those shades? I have the same light in my kitchen with the cheap shades from IKEA and have been trying to find some drum ones to dress it all up. Great job on your bedroom, I love reading what you come up with.

Thanks! I might have to check out Home Depot and see what they have. $79 is a great price for shades, what a bonus you get another light too.
DeleteLove it! My hubby drew up plans for trim similar to this for our bedroom a few weeks ago- Our ceiling in our master is vaulted so our design is a little funky also. Should be interesting, I cannot wait to get it installed!
ReplyDeleteLOVE that duvet set, Jen! West Elm always has the nicest bedding. And that molding... AMAZING! Now you got me thinking about our bedroom! ;)
ReplyDeleteI love what you did with the moulding! And the bedding set is fab.u.lous. :) Looks awesome!
ReplyDeleteLove it! You are so talented. You inspire me each time I read your blog! Thank you for sharing...
ReplyDeleteDianne
Jen, LOVE IT!
ReplyDeleteYou are such a talented pair. Great job. I enjoy your blog so much.
What about putting a fabulous wallpaper inside the new panels??
That's how I would roll...
I have thought about it, the hubs might freak out if I mention it. Baby steps, got the chandelier so I have to wait on wallpaper, lol. I might just paint it out a shade or two darker, but I have to head back to pull swatches to be sure.
Deletexoxo,
Jen
I love it! It looks fabulous!
ReplyDeleteThis looks fantastic. Did you move the mirror in from the other room?
ReplyDeleteYep! I stole it from above the TV in our living room. Darn it, it worked perfectly, lol. Now what to do above the TV? I have issues having two of the same mirror in my house, not sure why, but I do. Brainstorming and searching for other options for either spot. :)
Deletexoxo!
Jen
It's amazing what a few simple touches can add to a room!
ReplyDeleteThat looks amazing! I LOVE the color of your walls. Do you remember what kind of paint you used by any chance? :D
ReplyDeleteBehr's Premium Primer and Paint in one: Frozen Pond.
Deletexoxo,
Jen
HI, Im in love with the color of you walls. did you use eggshells or semigloss? also do you remenber if you bought the paint in homedepot or lowes? they seem to carry different brands thanks :)
DeleteHello!
DeleteI used a Flat paint on these walls - the color is Behr's Frozen Pond from Home Depot.
xoxo!
ooooohhh..pretty pretty pretty!!! I'm STILL trying to figure out what to do over our bed!! bah
ReplyDeleteAMAZING JEN!! I love it so much!
ReplyDeleteThis is pinworthy.
ReplyDeleteWhere are your nightstand charging stations? Do you have a new system for overnight phone charging?
ReplyDeleteApparently you aren't supposed to sleep near your phones, so we now charge in our main living areas.
Deletexoxo,
Jen
gorgeous room, Jen. I love the wall color. I can't wait to move so I can let some creative juices flow.
ReplyDeleteYou're really lucky to have such sound sleepers for kids. Mine won't sleep through a shower!
Oh, and as a side note, your hubbs is gorgeous too. You are one lucky lucky lady.
Great room! The "molding" definitely adds an expensive custom look to the space. I think the light fixture was a great move. I too am blessed by a sweet husband who willingly does all my ideas for me. :)
ReplyDelete...er.."moulding."
DeleteHi Jen! I am pretty new to your blog but I love your ideas. Very inspirational! I have recently re-organized my pantry, closets, fridge and am about to tackle my newly renovated laundry room. All using ideas I got from you! I hadn't checked in in a while but when I read your master bedroom post a couple of days ago I was very surprised... your "dream bedding" was exactly the same set I ordered a of couple weeks ago! I have a few more things to do before I get it on the bed. Once I do, I hope it looks as good as it does in your pics! You have great taste :)
ReplyDeleteI'm curious where you got those lamps... I love them!
ReplyDeleteHi Meghan!
DeleteThey are from Pottery Barn: http://www.potterybarn.com/products/alexis-ceramic-table-lamp-base/?pkey=e|lamp|102|best|0|viewall|24||86&cm_src=PRODUCTSEARCH||NoFacet-_-NoFacet-_-Lamps-_-
I have since seen similar pretty versions for less at HomeGoods, they are a great place to check for lamps.
xoxo,
Jen
This looks AMAZING!!!! Total transformation!!
ReplyDeleteLOVE IT!!!
ReplyDeleteSuch simple trim adds so much STYLE!
Love it Jen!! especially the trim. Do you know around the holidays I saw that sunburst mirror twice in one week. First I saw it at Goodwill still in the box and then again at Target. I think the one at Goodwill was only 9.00 I almost went back to get it because I've been looking for the perfect sunburst to go over our bed. I love how it looks over yours.
ReplyDeleteOoopsy my daughter told me the Goodwill mirror was actually 5.00 darn it shoulda snagged it!!
DeleteLooks so awesome! Yay for having your space back!
ReplyDeleteWow. Kuddo's to you. It went from just there to looking lush and fabulous for $27. :)
ReplyDeleteI love how your project turned out, you are such an inspiration and I love your blog. Kudos to your husband for helping you with your projects. I really wish I can get mine to help me, it is like pulling teeth with him.
ReplyDeleteLove the room! Such a great example of taking normal to the next level
ReplyDeleteThe colors, especially on the wall are beautiful. And the with trim just perfect.
ReplyDeletethis is so great!
ReplyDeleteWhat an amazing difference! Love how you didn't let that bulkhead compromise your design.
ReplyDeleteLooks great! And I just love the wall color!
ReplyDeleteThose last three shots have such a wow factor - such a perfect exmple of 'befores' and 'afters'. Great work - you're right it DOES look like an amazing fancy pants hotel!
ReplyDeleteGorgeous!!! Love it! I may just have to *steal* this idea~
ReplyDeleteI get giddy over successful projects too. And I loved the story about the chandelier. This room looks fantastic. I'm popping by from Vintage Revivals where you were listed as someone's favorite. I enjoyed my visit to your great blog.
ReplyDeleteWarmly, Michelle
I think you should change the paint, too. And why there is too many lights there? Are you afraid of the dark? But anyway, it's your room, you can do whatever you like, don't listen to me.
ReplyDeleteStill thinking about painting the panels...
DeleteI thought a lamp on each nightstand {for reading or a quick light at night} and a light fixture on the ceiling was pretty standard for bedrooms? Not scared of the dark, just prefer convenience.
xoxo,
Jen
What is it about ceiling fans and men? Yes, I know, air circulation and all that but they are UGLY. My husband is the same way. We are adopting 2 little girls and I want a chandelier for their room so badly, and he is all "no, they have to have a fan". I want to scream, ha ha!!
ReplyDeleteIt looks great!! I love how such simple and cheap tricks can make a world of difference.
ReplyDeleteMelissa
http://t-g-life.blogspot.com/
Wow, what an amazing difference! Oh, and I looooove the bedding too. I wish my husband would let me use a chandelier instead of a fan. We never even turn the stupid thing on. :)
ReplyDeleteLOVE your bed! Where did you buy it?
ReplyDeleteI found it a few years back at an Ashley Furniture Homestore. I looked around online for you but I don't see it there any longer.
Deletexoxo!
Jen
I love everything...I love bedding and I love how the inexpensive trim can make the room look so amazing!
ReplyDeleteLove the trimwork and that you found a creative solution for your wall. Also, if you don't mind sharing, where did you get the pillow case for your body pillow?
ReplyDeleteIt was actually part of Target's "kissing pleats" line from awhile back. It was about $20 and I just use it as a pretty pillow when I make the bed {it's decorative, not actually a body pillow}.
Deletexoxo!
Jen
This is beautiful! I can't wait to have a home that I can use as a blank slate to create with!
ReplyDeleteWow! So simple and affordable but with such a big impact.
ReplyDeleteJen! What a great idea! It turned out lovely... I am so totally jealous that you have such a crafty husband! If I have a great idea I just have to sit & think about it bc I can't do stuff like that by myself ha!! Cheers!
ReplyDeleteJen, it looks fantastic and extremely expensive and classy! What a difference!
ReplyDeleteI'm sure someone's already made a comment like this but the trim really adds visual height to the room!
ReplyDeleteI did this with my living room in Florida a few decades back. Mine had concave corner moulding. I filled the inside with a damask wallpaper and it was STUNNING. Your hubby did a great job with this and it looks fantastic. I can't wait to see what you do with the room next.
ReplyDeleteWe selected the same bedding and LOVE it! It's amazing how much of a different the molding on the wall makes...gorgeous :)
ReplyDeleteWe selected the same bedding and LOVE it! It's amazing how much of a different the molding on the wall makes...gorgeous :)
ReplyDeleteHey Jen! You guys did a great job in here and I've been thinking of doing a similar molding treatment in my bedroom. Yours is such great inspiration! The wall color is beautiful as well. My blog Involving Color is all about paint colors, and I would love to feature this. You wouldn't have to do a thing, just let me know if you're interested!
ReplyDeleteGorgeous! I wish I could think of somewhere in my house to incorporate this idea. :)
ReplyDeleteWhat size comforter is on the Duvet? I love duvets but my husband says the comforter moves around too much. Is there a secret to keeping it full and in place?
ReplyDeleteI always purchase the same size insert as the cover. Most covers now have small ties inside at each corner, but if not, there are duvet clips for sale at most home stores.
Deletexoxo!
Do you have curtains in this room? If do I was wondering the color and pattern. I am always unsure of how to mix colors and patterns.
ReplyDeleteRight now we do not have any curtains in our master bedroom, just thick white blinds. I will be sure to share when we do add a little something, but it will most likely be something simple like a roman shade in a subtle pattern. xoxo!
