A Little Organizing Window Shopping

As I mentioned yesterday, Parker and I had come down with the flu last week.  We were the last of the entire family to snag it, so you can imagine that by the time it got to us, we were already exhausted.  And we were quarantined for days so I couldn't wait to get out!  In fact, reading my post yesterday about the desk put some fire in me to do a quick IKEA run to price out add-ons and storage.

While I was out, I couldn't resist snapping some pics with my phone to share.  I saw lots of inspiring storage and organizing ideas.

Of course, you could tour the entire IKEA showroom and feel inspired room after room.  They piece all of their furniture together to create endless amounts of storage and smart space saving living.  It didn't dawn on me to take pictures of most of the items I saw, since I was with a child and we were in a bit of a hurry, but when he finally stopped for a minute, so did I.

I just love this little kid's playroom setup.  Like head over heals in love.  Love the bookcases with cabinet doors and the little crafting/play tables.  All of that storage and wall space just brings pure happiness to me.  We hung out here for a bit.  Then, it was time to move on.

I didn't come home with much, just a couple of cabinet doors and drawers for the new desk and some plastic toy storage bins for the playroom.  I tried to find some good under-mount lighting, but they were all corded so I didn't invest in anything quite yet.

On our way home from IKEA, we just happened to drive past a HomeGoods.  I told Parker I wanted to run in really really quick to look at a mirror.  I was a good mommy, I was pretty quick in there {it's usually a time pit for me and I can't get out without walking every inch and touching everything}.

I couldn't help but stop in the basket/storage aisle really quick, you know, for the sake of the blog.  Wink wink.

Many of you ask me frequently where I got these fantastic white lace baskets:

They were expensive little numbers {which have held up fantastically over the years so I am OK with that}, and from The Container Store.  They discontinued them awhile ago, so I know there have been a lot of sad faces because of that.  I was excited to see that HomeGoods provides a similar option.  Sure, their baskets are made of tin, but they offer a great "cutout" pattern and endless varieties of colors at a fraction of the white lace basket price!

Another basket I get asked a lot about are the green numbers in my laundry room:

Another discontinued basket, but HomeGoods had a similar FANTASTIC option!

Moral of the story.  Check HomeGoods for great, stylish storage.  I find a lot of the designer looks for less there.  It's always so lovely!

I really went in there for a mirror though.  I would love to add one in my studio since I am without natural light.  This one has been catching my eye for awhile now, but I just haven't brought myself to pull the trigger:

It reminds me a lot of one of my most favorite mirrors, Nicole from Making it Lovely pulled it off perfectly:

I try and have a one in, one out rule, and I have a mirror I could use, so if I want to replace it, I have to sell the other.

But it's still fun to look and find inspiration!  I also really loved this option from HomeGoods:

But I think I love Katie Bower's DIY version even better:

After HomeGoods, I had to pick up some groceries.  And since I had allowed myself to get sidetracked thus far, I stuck with it.  And I was at Target.  How do you not get sucked in at Target?  It's my happy place.

Because so many individuals are itching to get organized in January, Target really brought their storage game.  So many fun options to select from, above and beyond their typical fabulousness!

I started out in the budget dollar section.  Always try to find storage on a budget first right?  They had decorative paper trays, which would be great for keys, mail or a desk "in" box.

And lots and lots of receipt/coupon envelope options!

These tin bins have always been a favorite of mine!  They would be great for a Lego "build bucket", or girly girl things like hair supplies, or even corralling laundry essentials in a laundry room!

I also get questioned frequently on the source of the kid's blue quilts in their bedroom.  They were from Target long ago, and Target recently brought back an almost identical option at a great price!

They had some fun little bowl four-packs that I thought would make fun drawer dividers:

But what really left me drooling was the vibrant colors brought into their new storage bin line!

Check out the chevron options!

I also love that they had simple green baskets, but brought in some texture to keep them visually interesting!

I always check out their office supply section always.  They bring out a lot of fun designs and colors.  Like this fun Jonathan Adler-esque file box:

Or these super vibrant organizing bins, sorters and magazine files:

I did happen to get pulled into one tealy aisle that really caught my attention:

Lots and lots of loveliness!  And in my favorite color.  I was so proud of my ability to walk away empty handed.  This time anyway!

Those loving the zig-zag trend, love away!  They had pillows!!

And their new kitchen product line is full of more teal {along with a couple of other color options}, and I fell hard for the honeycomb cutout baskets!

By this point, I had to move along or else more storage would have hopped into my cart.  I was a good girl.  Groceries only this trip.  Not that it was easy... I think I am still twitching...

I know that we find a lot of inspiration these days from blogs, Pinterest and magazines, but I also love to look through store catalogs and even physically walk through stores.  Often times, they have the latest "trends" and offer up so many great combinations and color ideas, that will leave your mind spinning and inspired.  Even if that means re-creating your own versions at home DIY style on a budget!

Where do you go for inspiration?  Anyone else been spying lovely storage options out and about?

  2. I'm SO jealous - we don't have a HomeGoods anywhere near here! :( It makes me so very sad everytime I see the great stuff bloggers find! I love all of the baskets, but I don't know where I'd PUT them, I think that's my biggest challenge.

  4. I just got home from Target and all of that teal storage stuff reminded me of your blog :) It almost came home with me too- I'm redoing my kitchen in teal and red, just have to figure out how I want to bring the colors in.

  5. I love Target's new stuff! We checked it out yesterday... window shopping to :) Maybe it will hold out until we get out tax returns??? I hope I hope I hope!!

Oh I saw some baskets on clearance at Michael's today. Some were $5 or less! Big ones too! They were all darker colors which doesn't really work with my home, but it could work for someone else!

  6. See, I walked by those little green bowls at Target a few days ago. I thought they were cute but it never occurred to me to use them as storage. Genius Jen! Thanks for the idea!

  7. I actually bought the aqua tin bin and a few of those paper trays from Target for work! The bin houses my HEALTHY snacks, one tray hold my work "dishware" (my water cups, tupperware, etc), and the other corrals my misc office supplies - kleenex, cleaning wipes, contact solution (you never know...), dusting spray, etc. It was a perfect "makeover" for my overhead storage area in my cubicle for less than $5! And such pretty colors! I "heart" Target's dollar section!

  8. I went to Target this last weekend and was in heaven with all the cute organization accessories that I found. I could've spent hours in there if my family would've let me. I got tons of Valentine's decorations from the dollar bin, and actually got three of those pink tins that you have in your picture. I had no idea where I was going to use them when I bought them, but I am always looking for cute storage, so I know they will come in handy. And, I feel like everyone else, who doesn't like window shopping?!?!

    Glad you are feeling better!

  20. I was in Target on my lunch break yesterday and snagged some things in the dollar section. Four of those small trays to start and a few basket-ish items. They also had magazine holders in the same prints as those trays. I'm reorganizing the pantry and bathroom closets so I was thrilled to find some cheap options that go along with items I already had.

  21. I was in Target the other day and saw the Dollar Spot and all it's fantastic organizational products but I somehow missed the buckets. I've been wanting to pick one up for my son for his legos. This is perfect! I will have to go back (darn ;) ) and pick one up...and maybe a few other items. Our Target is 2 miles from my house and in a mall. I LOVE IT!

  22. Wow, I'm impressed! You have WAY more self-controlled than this organizing junkie. I'm so glad I don't live in the states near a Target. I think I'd be in trouble LOL.

    ReplyDelete
  23. I love Target, I actually just bought some organization things from there. All of the things you showed are really nice, I thin I may need to go back. But than again I can also get in trouble and buy too much

  24. OMG, those honeycomb baskets! I think I may need to make a Target run tonight!

    ReplyDelete
  25. This post is very timely to me because I am reading it after my Target run. I was not as self controlled as you though. I bought 3 small and 2 large of the plastic weave baskets in the teal color. I'm hoping to amp up the appearance and organization of my laundry room with those. Thanks for sharing!

  26. I love to go "shop-looking" as I call it. I end up spending like 2 hours wandering around whenever I go to Target by myself. Since it was my birthday this weekend I made the husband go with me to bum around The Container Store, mostly for ideas since it is so much more expensive!

  29. My favorite stores :-) I actually just purchased that same metal bin on clearance from Homegoods and the Target dollar spot has been loaded with good stuff lately. I got some plastic bins with handles to organize our fridge. Fantastic post :)

  30. I spotted those zig zag baskets right after Christmas and had to snag a teal one for our new playroom. LOVE it. I also picked up one of the small plastic green baskets with the fun weave and one of those teal wall file holders. Target sure does suck a person in! I also have some of those paper trays from the dollar section and a pretty file box from their office supply section. Love them all! Almost got sucked in to buying one of those metal honeycomb-ish baskets in the kitchen aisle. I restrained myself, like you said, "this time..." lol Love your blog!

I went to Target last week looking to score some cute organizing essentials and everything I bought you showed in this post!! I guess I'm on the right track. The fun textured plastic bins, the metal buckets and the exact same file box. Yeah!

  34. I spent a silly amount of time walking around Target on the weekend with my jaw dropped. They really have great lines right now. Very proud as I only bought one zig zag container and one pillow! Great round up of cute things out there right now.

  35. Ha ha just had to laugh because you wrote that you were "with child" rather than "with a child" or "with children" Love your blog and use your ideas all the time!

  36. I was so at Target today drooling over all the same items!!! I walked out empty handed too...it was a grocery only trip as well! So funny. Anyway...still trying to figure out where I "need" all those fab organizational containers! I'm sure I'll come up with something! Thanks for sharing...and giving me ideas to fuel the fire.

  39. So glad to hear everyone's doing better know and especially with some window shopping therapy! I LOVE those quilts from Target and also purchased two green ones for my boys (and when they went on sale no less..woohoo!). I've been listening to Feng Shui techniques while I work out and definitely feel inspired to go check out some of those cool items you photographed...especially the metal buckets for $2.50!

  40. I'm dying to get to Ikea, the closest one is 2 hours away!! But, there is a Target right down the road! I hit up the dollar spot last week and got lots of teal storage for my pantry re-do! My target had lots of plastic teal square containers for $1. I grabbed 4, not knowing what I would use them for. Turns out they are awesome for holding loose oatmeal packets, spice packets, popcorn...I added some chalkboard labels you featured on here before, and voila!! LOVE!! There were some Itso bins on clearance too! The only regular priced item I got was one of those plastic chevron bins. I had to have it! I used it to throw all my baking items in (cookie cutters, decorator, food coloring, etc). I was hoping to use a lighter turquoise for my pantry storage, but couldn't pass up the price!!

    ReplyDelete
  41. We don't have a Home Goods store near where I live, so that isn't an option for me, but we DO have Target, and I remember seeing lots of those items the last time I was there! I am drooling right along with you! Turquoise is my favorite color as well, and it is hard to resist the beautiful stuff! I simply cannot wait to see what finishing touches you bring to your studio! I know it will be exquisite!

    ReplyDelete
  42. Is the Target by you also a Super Target?? It seems like it has a lot more than my Target does. I don't live anywhere near a Super Target...actually I don't think there are any in Michigan. I have been looking for the organizer you have for craft storage and for the storage bins you used for hand me downs in the different colors. LOVE your blog btw! It has motivated me SO much! Can't wait to see what you bring to 2012! -Kim

  43. I am so jealous of US Target - like Cassie said, Target here doesn't have half of these things. Definitely no groceries, so there goes that excuse! =p

I do love window shopping though. I have friends who say they don't like it because they can't buy things, but I love looking, and planning what could be done with things.

Plus, I find it helps me remember things down the track when I have a problem and need to find a solution.

Most of my window shopping is done online these days, but it's just not the same as wandering around an actual shop.

  44. I could live in Target and HomeGoods. Love. Those. Stores.

I'm not saying this in a mean way, so please don't think I'm being snooty, but it is spelled aisle not isle. Isle is a word, but it's not what you mean here. Gah, I feel like such a jerk for writing this, but I'd like to know if I spelled something wrong on my blog. Please don't hate me!

  45. I love Target and Ikea. I seem to end up in Target at least once a week. Great for my mood but bad for my wallet. My son loves to play with the video games in Target, but I think I'm going to put an end to it, because they are set ridiculously loud!

  46. I love Target. I noticed yours more stuff that I haven't seen mine yet. Im In Los Angeles area. They have many great office organization. I love Home Goods which is few minutes drive from my home. I heard they are having new The Container store next door to Home Goods. So happy that It is closer I usually go like 45 minutes away. I have agree with you it is good way to get cheaper opinion of decorating that are similar things. I love beds from pottery barn and I couldn't afford so I found identical at IKEA saved me 700!! So it worked out great. I like budget finds that similar to expensive finds!

I think you should pull the trigger ;) You will smile every time you walk by it :)

  50. Never been to Ikea. Stopped by target and picked up 3 portion clear plastic "silverware" divider. Cleaned up 2 drawers probably will trash most of extras and junk. I should take another look at the $ paper trays and then off to Home Goods for those metal lace bins. Those might work for hubbys' mail. Helen S

  51. LOVE the turquoise basket for 12.99, I think it is for fruit, but it could be used so many ways. I have had my eye on it for a few weeks now and I just might have to get one this week. I very rarely buy stuff without a specific purpose for it, so please help me find one. My living room has that color in it, but I don't think I have anywhere to put it where it would really shine. so in love with that basket, looks even better online.

  58. Don't forget your tape measure when you go to the store. I recently did some organization with the 5 cube Expedit organizers, and I needed to get some stuff to put inside of them to help organize. I LOVED the teal hanging file folder holder at Target, but it was too wide for my shelves, because I wanted the holders to be facing forward.

  77. IKEA was my inspiration throughout planning our move to our smaller house. We are SOOOOOOOOOOO much happier with LESS space and LESS junk! I work walking distance from an IKEA so I go in there from time-to-time for inspiration. I love Target's Dollar Section (and Dollar Tree stores) for organizing stuff, too.
