50 Basement Progress: My Fairytale Room Part 4

We MOVED!

Big big weekend here.

It's been over a year since our lower level flooded and we started the renovation process.  And for that last year we had taken over our guest room

Well, this weekend, we moved out of our guest room and back down stairs into our previous master bedroom!  Major smiles all around!

As you recall, we had created a dressing room during our reno process, and when I last updated you, we had just sprung for some wardrobes:

And this weekend, I got to FILL them!

We also had added a dresser to the space to bring in some additional storage.  Our previous dresser will remain up in the guest room.

I can't wait to make over that dresser.  It's screaming to be messed with....

But how did I organize it you ask?

Well, I started by making the decision to share the top drawer with the hubs.  We had gotten a couple of sock organizers from the Container Store, and it made the most sense to just use an entire drawer to hold them.

It's amazing how many spaces there actually are to fill.  And how little we really had to put in them.  Plenty of room to spare!  And I was a little nervous to share a drawer with the hubs, this is a total first for us after 12 years living together, but day two and we are still holding strong.

The next drawer I just used some clear drawers to hold my swimwear and pj bottoms.

When it came to organizing my wardrobe, oh my lanta did that have way more space than I could have asked for.  It almost looks funny to me... like I need to purchase more clothes?  Just kiddin.

I am going to try and find a solution for my sweaters/chunky cardigans, another shelf or insert of some sort would be good....  All of my shirts and dresses are hung on the other side:

My verdict on the slim velvet hangers?  LOVE them!  They are fantastic.  The hold the clothes so nicely in place and are so super slim.  I may never go back to plastic hangers again!  The baskets on the top shelf hold scarves and under garments.  And we popped some standard shoe organizers we already had into the bottoms to add extra storage, they fit like a glove!

It feels AMAZING to have everything so organized!  And we have already done some laundry and putting everything away was so easy!  That's my favorite part!

As far as the master bedroom goes, so far, just our bed and nightstands live in there... well and a little monkey jumping on the bed!

It is so exciting to reclaim our old space again.  And to feel like we are finally using it to it's fullest potential!

Anyone else do some furniture moving this weekend?  Any of you brave enough to share a drawer with your partner?

  7. ohhh soo exciting! So happy you were finally able to re-clam your space! The closet looks amazing! My hubby and I had to share a dresser and very small closet for a long time when we were first married and living in a small apt. THAT was VERY hard... you are brave to share a drawer! Hope it continues to go well : )

  8. There is no chance that I'd be able to share a drawer with my boyfriend! We can't even share a closet, haha.

  9. Don't you love those hangers! I'm not really into hanger hype but I'm glad I switched. They always have them at Marshalls and Ross.

  10. Seriously? That's all of your clothes? I gotta say, I'm kind of jealous! I feel like we are busting at the seams with clothes in our house, but with two professional jobs, plus business casual days, life outside of work, and "dressy" stuff my husband and I have going on, I don't know how on earth I could get the volume of clothing down to what you show. We also don't have a coat closet anywhere, so coats, jackets, etc. all go in our master closet too. I'm still jealous and now the wheels are turning to see what I can purge!

  12. Looks great Jen! I'm a bit sad that you had to cover more of your stencil with the dresser. I don't know if I could have after putting in all the work. It looks fabulous though! :-0

Love your blog, and your organizational skills (and, style!) And, I too, share a sock drawer with my hubby. It's the ONLY drawer we share. I think we may need to get those from the Container Store. Our's is a mess!

  18. My husband and I have shared drawers our entire marriage until last month! We just bought a huge dresser from IKEA and I am loving that we each have our own drawers. I too feel like I have so much space and I had so much fun organizing all of it! I'm going to write a post on it soon. :)

  22. Do you mind if I ask how you handle being on a different floor from your boys during the night? We have a spare bedroom in our basement and have been contemplating letting our 12 year old son move down there so the 3 boys all have more room. I worry about if he would get sick or need us during the night at all. Maybe I worry too much? :) We used to use our baby monitor when the boys had friends over and slept in the basement but that has long broken.

  23. This weekend I cleaned out the mudroom for the first time in at least 6 months. No before or after pictures but it feels so clean and open and fresh. All the winter gear is out and organized, all the summer stuff is put away. We're ready for the snow. So of course it was 60 degrees outside! I would have done some last minute gardening but some farmer laid down some fertilizer and the whole town stinks of cow manure. Perhaps tomorrow...

  24. It would be nice being able to get your room back after that. It looks gorgeous. I love the patterned wall and your closet spaces. I'm in the process right now of updating and organizing our bedroom. It will be a relief once it's completely finished!

  25. ohh...i am turning a playroom into a guest room/ office....so that means I was knee deep in toy organinzing, purging, and furniture moving. toys are now in my girls bedroom....so still trying to figure out how to combine the two (play and sleep) so that it will be functional, and not walk in at 3am to find them cooking on their play kitchen. LOL.

  26. I'm so jealous of your dressing room. I love the organization of your drawers, I think I'll have to look into that stuff.
My husband and I have wardrobes since very few houses have closets in England and they are a mess since there is not structure to them. I like yours much better.

  27. Yowza!! It looks wonderful, you must want to hang out in your master room all day long! I know I would =) Sharing a drawer is pretty monumental in my books.....DH & I have lived together for almost 5 years & I haven't budged an inch, LOL!
Great job on the bedroom though - it looks fab!

  29. I am so "right-brained" that a lot of organizing techniques feel foreign to me. So, that probably explains why, when I first saw your sock organizer, I thought [just for an instant] that I was looking at a box of chocolates! :-) I'm a newbie on your blog...checking in daily now....still trying to figure out why legos should be organized....but really knowing you've got something here.... :-)

  30. OK, you have inspired me to get rid of a TON of clothes. I have way, way, way too much stuff. Seeing how you pared things down has really got the wheels turning for me. Do you have out-of-season clothes storage?

  35. seriously amazing Jen! And I still just cannot get over that stenciled wall!!!!!!! That might be my favorite stencil pattern ever! Intricate, class, and modern... all in one!

    ReplyDelete
  36. I'm also sad to see the stencil get covered up. Any chance of putting a pretty bench under the mirror and moving the dresser elsewhere? Just a thought.....looks like great progress!

  37. Jen this is gorgeous!!! You are soooooo organized. I love how everything has turned out already. Can't wait to see your bedroom finished. I think I need those hangers...It would really help me further in my already organized closet.

  38. Will be doing some furniture moving this weekend when we finally organize the spare bedroom, the last frontier from our move.

  40. Those velvet hangers rock my world, too. I'm slowly adding more and more to my closet. The space is really coming together and I'm so excited for you!!

  41. Hi Jen,

I've been dying to see a wardrobe / clothes organizing post since I started following your blog. Thanks so much for this post! I'm still working on my closet (I have lots of thin tees and tank tops in my drawers and they get lost without drawer containers. I have a few containers but it's still not organised enough.)

Would you do a post on organizing jewellery? I've seen a lot of people use ceramic / plastic egg trays, but what about jewellery that's not worn regularly, or stored in many small boxes, where do you keep those? Do you have a drawer or a box?

Thanks so much again for this post!

  42. @VYang,

I just pop my fancy jewelry in a small jewelry box and tucked away for safe keeping. However, I really don't wear much jewelry, only some inexpensive things from time to time. I can do more posts on the subject in the future though since I think it's a great universal topic!

    xoxo,
    Jen

  44. Hi Jen,

I am currently ready to re-do my dressing room as was at Ikea this past weekend looking at the Komplement series. How have the Aspelund wardrobes held up?

I am so glad I found your site because this is exactly what I want to do in my dressing room.

    1. Hi Mary Jane!

The reason we had to go with the Aspelund is because they were the only ones that fit with our "ceiling" height. However, I did fall in love with a couple of the other options at IKEA as well. That said, they have held up great! They are just like the day we purchased them. My only complaint is that it was hard to maximize the storage in them as I wish it would have come with more shelving or options to add more storage/organizing solutions, however, I have a few ideas to problem solve through that.

Hope that helps! I would love to see how your dressing room turns out!

      xoxo,
      Jen
