124 Blog Tidbits

I am doing something I never do, so forgive me ahead of time...

I just have a couple of things on my mind since today was an odd day for me and my blog baby.  It was full of ups and downs, and I feel like a post is warranted due to the outcome.  If you have been following along on Facebook, you already have been clued in to what this is about.  If not, then why are you not following me on Facebook, because you should be?!  Wink wink!

This morning I woke up, drank my cup of coffee, played with my kids, and checked in on some comments.  It was then that I read something that made me feel ill and queasy inside.  It's not the first time I had received criticism, but 99% of the time that I do, it's because I solicit it to make this blog a better place for us all, so I welcome it and look to it as a learning opportunity.  Don't get me wrong, I wanted to tear up after I saw some of the comments the last time I asked for opinions, as anytime you pour your heart and soul into something and receive feedback, it can be hard to take... but when it goes beyond a simple "help you out" piece of advice or feedback and into "hurtful words" territory, that it becomes completely unacceptable to me.

I understand that when you blog and have thousands and thousands of hits and visitors a day, you can't please everyone.  You can't do everything right.  You can't expect everyone to be on board with your ideas or motives and beliefs.  It comes with the job.  That's why our world is so great right?  We are all different with different opinions and tastes and beliefs.  I cherish your opinions good and bad, however, I also cherish the simple rule of respecting a fellow friend and staying positive when sharing an opinion, or even just keeping it to myself if I can't find a good way to spin it.

This blog is meant to be a happy place.  A place for me to share my creative juices, to meet incredible friends, to find and share inspiration and ideas.  It's a passion turned job for me.  How amazing is that?  How lucky am I?  To be doing what I LOVE?!

That being said, I pour hours and hours of time into writing, coming up with ideas, taking photos and editing them, managing giveaways and sponsorships and maintaining/updating the design, graphics and content.  It's not easy.  I work 7 days a week and can't keep up.  I work day and night.  And you know what?  I heart every minute of it, but it's also time away from my family and a feeling of continuous obligation.  I am grateful to have this place.  I am grateful for your visits.  I am grateful for your notes and emails and comments.  I am grateful for your daily support.  Really, I am.  I am one of the most grateful people you will find, because majority of the time I feel like I am living this dream life and never want to wake up.  There will be times when I goof and spell something wrong or misuse punctuation or maybe I make the most insane organizing or decorating choice or even go off on random tangents...  it's all bound to happen, and I just ask that you all keep any comments regarding any of those things on the positive {as 99% of you do so THANK YOU!}

OK, so speaking of grammar.  Ugh.  I wasn't going to say anything, but now I can't hold back.  First, I have never been strong in grammar; actually it's still a joke between my mom and me because she is exactly opposite.  She has been fixing my spelling since I was six years old, it is too bad she can't edit this blog for me daily.  Or that I can't afford to hire a full time editor.  I excelled at math and the arts.  Over the years, I lost the math bug, let's hope I don't lose the artistic one or I am screwed....

I understand possessions and compound words and that many words can be spelled two ways with different meanings, like pear and pair.  And I even usually know the right one to use.  However, there are times when I still can't figure out loose and lose and choose and chose... as are many others from the sounds of it!  But I am not an editor, I never took classes on the subject and I don't claim to be a spelling wiz.  In fact, I am the first to laugh when I whip up a pretty label and realize I spelled "yard steaks" instead of "yard stakes".  We are our own worst critics, and I know that I make mistakes.  There are probably 56 in this post alone... oh boy.  So I beg, come here for advice, ideas, smiles, pictures, sharing and of course, endless amounts and tips and tricks and inspiration, but please don't expect perfection.

Finally, since I am only planning on posting like this once ever in the history of IHeart Organizing, the other hot topic and feedback I have received, is in regards to sponsorships and ads.  This is a touchy one, and I am going to do my best to keep it short and sweet {have I ever been able to do that?}

First, this blog would not exist without the sponsors.  So if you love the blog, then the sponsors come with it to keep the lights on.  That's how a lot of things work.  I could either charge everyone a monthly subscription for visiting, or I can take on the opportunity to make an income to support my time blogging and my hard work, by working with sponsors.  Just like TV shows, magazines, businesses and a zillion other blogs do.  It works and it makes sense.

Second, I will agree that at times it can feel like "sponsor driven" posts may be a bit much.  I don't ever want this blog to be about that or feel like that is the direction the blog is heading.  Ever.  It's about organizing, family, home and life. Therefore, I am absolutely aiming for more balance.  More on that in a minute.

Third, I am selective about what I review and giveaway.  I receive many offers and promotions to write about things that don't fit with this blog.  I only select items that I would use or endorse.  Items that promote an organized lifestyle, green living, pretty living, feeling good, eating well, kids and family, etc... Everything I am about, I will be willing to share with you.  I never allow a product review unless I am able to give something back to you.  And not everything will be a fit for you, but you never know, something also might be just what you have been looking for.  The other great thing about the product reviews and giveaways is that I L O V E to support individuals following their own dreams, just as I am.  I would only hope that others will do the same for me as the opportunity should arise.

And fourth.  As I mentioned far above, I am an extremely grateful and appreciative individual for having this blogging opportunity.  My sponsors are fueling my dream.  The least I can do is give them a monthly thank you shout out.  That will never change.  I will never take them off the sidebar.  I will always give them the love that they deserve.  You can always choose to skip that post if you wish.

Now back to the balance part.  Because I don't want product reviews/giveaways/sponsorship posts to feel like they are hogging a huge chunk of the blog, I will do my best to double post those days.  It won't ALWAYS happen, but I will do what I can.  It's all about finding the perfect balance between the two and I am still working on achieving it.

I think I am done now.  I wish I wouldn't have had to go there.  But it needed to be said.  I needed to get it off of my chest, otherwise, I unfortunately am the kind of person who will let anything negative eat at me until all that is left is my toes, and that is just gross.

And because I always believe in ending on a high note.  I am to the point where I am a whole month out and have over 300+ emails in my inbox!  YAY!!  Wait, that's not good?  So it is a bit true that it gives me a horrifying overwhelming feeling that I am that far behind for the first time since I started this blog, so forgive me as you wait for a response on everything from sponsoring me to answers on if you should paint your hallway leaping lizards green or lunenburg blue, I will do my absolute best to get back to each and every one of you as I can.  But here is why I see it as a positive:
  • I had THE BEST busiest summer and I can't wait to share more with you as to why and...
  • There is a lot of love going on in that inbox that means the world to me and I seriously am at a lost for words when it comes to the appreciation I have for you all and every single note, inquiry and question I receive.  I know that there are so many IHeart Organizing supporters out there, I could just cry thinking about it and that's all that matters, so much more than any one bad thing that is said.  It's now time for me to mark today down as another learning experience and move on.

I am going to delete the entire thread of negativity that went on today.  It doesn't mean that I don't sincerely appreciate all of you who completely had my back {you seriously MADE MY DAY!}, but I never want to see or live it again.  And if I do, I will continue to delete the bad, read all of your hundreds of kind comments that I printed off from Facebook, and move on with a smile.  Because that is how I roll.

I know I am not alone in this, here are a couple more of my favorite posts on this very subject:

  1. Good for you for posting this. Do people really expect you to just spend all of that time away from your family with no compensation? It's not like you're "sneaky" with what you post to gain money from people. I know it's hard to deal with negativity on blogs -- I've been there. You don't deserve the crap that others are giving you. They're jealous. If they're on your blog in the first place then something had to draw them here. And I'm sure it wasn't the first time they're visiting, just to leave a snarky comment. I appreciate everything you do and am inspired by you every day. =]

  2. I've been reading a lot of blogs over the years and there comes a point in very blog when the blogger has to write a post like this. It's unfortunate! I don't understand why people get so hot under the collar about what somebody writes. It's in everybody's power to read or switch off from a blog. Take it or leave it in other words.

I think it's too easy to hide behind a computer screen and say hurtful words that you would never dream of saying in real life.

I hope you can move on coz I love your blog! Keep blogging and ignore the haters.

  3. Serious high fives for posting this. It boggles my mind that people go out of their way to post negative, snarky, and/or hurtful comments on blogs just because they have nothing better to do. Continue doing what you're doing. You're awesome.

Additional high fives for being the mathy type, even if it's escaped you!

  4. Oh Jen,
we're so alike! I had the same problem a couple months ago, and it seriously hurt me. I know that people say, don't pay attention to it, but it's so hard not to!
Just know 99% of us love you lots and the other 1% of people are CRAZY! :)
    Lots of Love

  5. Your blog is amazing! I'm sorry that you've been getting negative comments. There are always a few people like that! (Unfortunately) You're doing a great job. :)

  6. Good on you Jen! You can easily see how much work and dedication goes into this blog.

As a fellow blogger, I don't understand people who think we should blog for free. Like you said, magazines include advertising, and no-one would say they shouldn't. Or that the people who write the magazine articles shouldn't get paid just because they happen to be interested in, and enjoy, what they do.

One thing I would say though (again, as a fellow blogger) is that dooce.com had one of their best days traffic when there was this kind of drama. So I don't know if I wouldn't be tempted to leave the negitive comments up. Seriously, people love drama (just check my site if you don't believe me!). I bet that if you left the comments up, it would become a post that got a lot of traffic with people looking to see what went on.

I know I'm nosy, but I would definitely go check it out if it was still up!

Anyway, all the best to you and your family, your blog is amazing, full of such inspiration, and I know how many hours it must take you. Keep at at it.

  7. Hi Jen.

Firstly, I think yours is one of the nicest and least controversial blogs I have ever read. Why someone would bother to be upset about any of your posts is beyond me!

Whilst bad spelling usually raises my blood pressure lol, I haven't actually noticed particularly bad spelling in your posts. And since yours is not an education or commercial writing blog, then little should it matter.

I actually find a lot of your advertisers products nice, and have gone off to look at their sites. But, if there are any I'm not interested in, I skip ahead!

But there is one thing that frustrates me about your blog - I live in Australia, and can't buy any of the cute things that you can buy, and certainly not at the cheap prices! So unfair! I would move to the US just to be able to shop for all the goodies you can buy at Target that we can't get in our Target lol.

Keep up the good work Jen. I look forward to reading your blog more than most of the other 100+ I subscribe to!

  8. Ignore those people, they are just jealous honey!

  9. I am a persnickety reader who finds grammatical and spelling errors like a seagull finds a stray chip, but really, it's not such a big deal. I love your work and if you ever wanted a free editor, I would be happy to help :)

  10. Jen, I absolutely love what you do!!! I love the ideas and creativity that you share, the insight that you give, and the escape (from screaming toddlers on my end) that you provide. You are one of two blogs that I read daily and I am so very grateful that you share everything that you do. There are some days that this blog is the only "adult interaction" that I get (due to hubby's late night work evenings) and I thank you for that. You rock girl!!!!

  11. I am an English teacher, and I have never once been annoyed with any errors in your blog. In fact, I can't even remember noticing any! I heart the product reviews too and understand that they help keep the blog afloat! Keep doing what you're doing!! You rock!

  12. Oh Jen, I am so sorry you felt so much anxiety over negative nasty comments from someone(s) who is either miserable and/or jealous. I am sad to read this post because I can see how much it hurt you. Please know that your many friends out here care a lot about you and love and appreciate all that you do with your site. I thoroughly enjoy everything you post and soak it all up. You provide tons of inspiration for many people. I also enjoy your stories of your family and can't help but smile at many things you post. You are clearly a very sweet and thoughtful person and I hope you can look at the situation and let those things roll off your back like rain. Remember what is important, keep your passion, know your true friends support you and appreciate you. Remember those wise words about people can't control your feelings unless you let them... I know, easier said than done. And you know, maybe most people like myself who keep you right at the top of daily must reads appreciate the lack of perfection (although you're close *wink*) and how you keep it real. It allows us to relate better to you and helps us believe that we can achieve similar results. I think you're great and I really enjoy your posts and your site. Right now, I think its the only one I look at every day and I'm always on the computer. So keep that lovely smile on our face and move on. You should create a button that says "No negative nellies allowed" or something creative. LOL. Lova ya girl.

  13. I don't know what went on, but I can tell you are upset by it, and that's just Not Right.

I love your blog, it's pretty, it's funny (you have a lovely way with words) and the photos are gorgeous. I'm in the UK, so the sponsors are a bit irrelevant to me (although I do look at them sometimes!) but I totally understand that they have to be there.

Keep on blogging, because there are lots of us that love reading! x

  14. Hi Jen, I don't read blogs to be a fix me teacher so don't worry:) I absolutely adore your blog, keep up the good work and I have a newfound respect for your ability to continue holding your head up!

    ReplyDelete
  15. I am so sorry you've been getting negative comments. It can be very difficult to balance life and a blog, so I admire those who can do it. Just keep doing what your doing because it's great.

  16. I've never posted a comment before, but I do visit your blog daily and love reading your posts. Good for you for writing this post! Down with negativity and nastiness! Up with compassion and kindness! Keep up the good work :-)

  17. Jen, so sorry you went through all of this. I must have missed it as I didn't get a chance to get on yesterday, and now I'm glad I didn't. Keep up what you are doing. If we went through this world trying to please everyone, I think we all know we would fail miserably. Do what you love!

  18. Hi Jen,
I'm so sorry you had to go through this. I HEART your blog and I rarely miss a post!! Keep up the awesome work and don't let the jealous people get to you! You have many more supporters than the few negative ones.

  19. Jen,

Some people just don't know how to turn jealousy into a positive, and instead insist on creating mean and hurtful words. I love your blog, I read it every day! I don't even have kids yet and I still love reading each and every blog and spinning them to use what is best for me. Keep doing what you are doing. Don't change the way you are!

  20. Good for you girl. I love this blog and don't know what I would do without it - you give me so many great ideas, and you're so cheerful and your family is beautiful. Keep at it, and don't let that negativity get in the way. Just keep doing what you're doing because you're GREAT at it!

  21. Jen -
I normally don't post on blogs but had to post today because I felt so sad you have gotten any negative comments on your blog! It's perfect!!! I check it every morning with my cup of coffee and you continually inspire me to attempt organization projects around my house. Plus, it's one of the happiest blogs out there..I love the colors, the font, the photography, etc! I wouldn't change a thing :)

Thank you for all you do for us!

  23. Hey Jen.

Anyone who has the time and energy to go on a blog and leave a comment regarding grammar needs to get a life.

Regarding the sponsorship, I advertise here because I love your blog and because I like the monthly shout out. I had my own blog but found that keeping up the blog and my website and all of the jewelry orders was taking up way too much time away from my family so I stopped the blog for now. The shout out offers a nice opportunity to offer a sale or get some info out about new designs. And I have had countless orders from your readers so a lot of them must like it!

Thanks so much for your blog and the shout outs!

  24. Hi Jen,

Someone was mean to you? On Facebook? They need to get real, you help SO MANY people out of their organising rut which quite honestly changes our lives for the better. Organising and taking on your pointers has given me time and prettiness in my home and so I am grateful to you fo that.

    Sarah.

  25. I love your blog! keep up the good work and ignore ignorant rude people! I misspell too :)

  26. I am so sorry you've been receiving anything in the way of negative criticism. I've only recently found your blog, and I've already repainted my bathroom, my hallway, and reorganized my pantry! I find you incredibly inspiring, kind, and I'm always amazed at the amount of time and thought you put into your projects and your blog. You're my Martha Stewart!

Thank you for all that you share.

    Blessings.

  27. I'm sorry about all this mess/negativity. I enjoy your blog and am amazed at all that you do. I'm also one who cringes at errors, so I thank you for presenting another side to how that happens. (I'm not saying I've noticed this on your blog, just that now I have another perspective.) I would trade my grammar gene for your creativity gene any day.

    ReplyDelete
  28. I hope they all don't watch tv, with product placement every few seconds... They must be miserable in the world we live in with all this advertising :).
Seriously, this is a blog, how I see it your blabbing about what you love and logging it through writing... Who seriously cares if you go off on a tangent or misspell a word. C'mon. Thats what keeps it real. However, I personally haven't seen you doing that.
Your blog is fantastic and I have been very impressed with the amount of posting and the quallty of content that you have been putting out there recently! I'm always inspired. Please don't let these bullies get you down.
I do have to say this is one of the reasons I don't blog. My hubby and some friends have been wanting me to start one for the last few years and I just can't bring myself to do it. Just keep in mind this is YOUR blog. Be yourself. Thats who we love. If they don't like it they can move on!

    ReplyDelete
  29. It boggles my mind that anyone would make negative comments on a blog like this. I started reading your blog about 4-5 months ago and it has become one of the highlights of my day. You are such a positive creative person and have really inspired me to make some important changes in my life (I'm a whole new person with my family binder!!). Keep doing exactly what you're doing! (And by the way, I am NOT the kind of person who comments on blogs but it was really important for me to show you some support).

  30. I just wanted to say that when I open my reader and see there's a new post on your blog I think to myself "Yay!!" and I can't wait to read it. :)

    ReplyDelete
  31. I'm glad you have a positive outlook and that you are putting the negativity aside. Who knows why people say mean things on blogs or anywhere, for that matter? It goes back to that old adage, If you don't have anything nice to say, don't say anything at all. And now, let's Keep Calm and Move on! :-)

    ReplyDelete
  32. Jen,

You are an inspiration!!! Thank you for all the hardwork you continually put into this blog! It is refreshing to know that you can look past this stream of negativity and move on with such a positive attitude. Keep up the GREAT work!

  33. Ever since I found out about your blog last fall, it has been one of my favorites that I HAVE to check every single day! Because I too love organizing, and your organizing is not only functional, it's SO pretty! And because you are just so darn nice!

I'm not a blogger, but I'm a teacher. And I'm a good teacher and I put my heart and soul into it. And over the years, I have dealt with complaints and criticisms (and my favorite, accusations) from the parents of children that I work so hard for all day long. I do the best that I can, and I am a grown-up and can handle someone disagreeing with me. But, there is a very small contingent of people out there that really feel like they can say ANYTHING and don't think twice about feelings or being respectful... and some who really do TRY to be hurtful! Well before I go off on a tangent, I'm just saying that I understand how that feels, and it can really hurt and it can ruin your day, your week, your month if you let it. You have to put it out of your mind and move on and focus on the good! Keep doing what you're doing! I can't tell you how many times I have checked your blog after a long day at school to escape to that nice, happy, organized, friendly, pretty place!

    ReplyDelete
  34. I love your blog! Lots of great inspiration. It's too bad people can't see it for what it really is. Keep up the awesome work!

    ReplyDelete
  35. So sorry you were hurt by other's negative comments. I just started reading your blog last month. A friend forwarded it to me. It has already inspired me to organize, clean and create! I love it. Keep up the great work!

    ReplyDelete
  36. I don't mind the sponsors. As a fellow blogger, I understand the time and money that goes into this. I love the fact that many of your sponsors are small businesses like you, and along the same subject as your blog. You could have just stuffed your page full of google ads and been done with it. selecting sponsors the way you do takes a lot more time and effort.

Thanks for all you do! I got lots of great ideas from your blog!

    ReplyDelete
  37. You have to draw the line somewhere and it's your blog. You should feel like you can delete the comments that detract from the reason you're here. It's the same as filtering out bot comments.

Your ideas are useful and you artistic style is lovely and that counts more. Keep up the good work!

    ReplyDelete
  38. Obviously, this needed to be posted. I can't understand why people want to be so hateful. I didn't read the thread, but it could only mean one thing....the person is jealous. Seems to be the only explanation. Or they are just bitter. Either way, keep your head up. If you ever need encouragement, just go look at how many people (myself included) who have pinned YOUR posts on Pinterest. :) That will make your day!

    God bless you!!

    ReplyDelete
  39. Well, you've come out and said that this blog is your job, so if someone has commented on the quality of your blogging perhaps you should take that as a form of quality control? I'm not sure you have to apologize for having sponsors as I'm sure we all know that most blogs exist to make money for the bloggers. I'm not in the US so whatever you plug isn't available to me anyway.

You know, those of us out in the world who have full or part time jobs deal with comment and criticism from our peers, supervisors, customers etc., and it makes us stronger and do our job better. Not to mention those yearly appraisals which can be quite difficult! How about looking at any "negative" comments as something to be acted upon, rather than looking for sweetness and light at every turn? Life just isn't like that.

    ReplyDelete
  40. I didn't read the negative comments but wanted to say that I just recently found your blog and I think it's great. I always notice grammar and spelling errors on every blog I read, but I would never think to comment on them. Who cares!? I have much better things to do with my time as I'm sure you do as well!

It's obvious you love what you are doing with this blog and I hope you can keep this positive, upbeat attitude.

    ReplyDelete
  41. All I can say is THANK YOU! Reading your blog has been inspiring, motivating, and has made me a better wife and mother. Thank you for putting yourself out there for us. I appreciate you more than words can ever say.

    ReplyDelete
  42. I LOVE your blog! I rarely (if ever) comment, but I always love it! I'm the same way--I get my feelings hurt if there is ONE person who is critical of me. I also worry about punctuation, which is a little frustrating considering it IS my blog. Nobody has to read it if they don't want to! ;) Something I'm trying to learn is to serve an "Audience of ONE", which is Jesus Christ. His opinion of me is the only one that really matters! :) Hope you feel better with all the love coming your way! *hugs* :)

  43. I just found your blog this summer. I love it just the way it is. I think you are positive, upbeat, helpful, and encouraging! I have gotten ideas from you and have shared them with others.
I don't do facebook, so I don't know what has been said there, but I think you just have to ignore the haters.
I hope you have a great day and I look forward to your continued posts!

  44. That's just silly!! I enjoy reading all of your posts, but if I didn't want to read about the sponsors I just wouldn't read it. I really enjoy all of your posts and your talents. Thanks for your blog and I look forward to reading every day.

  45. Jen, I didn't read the drama that went down on fb...but I'm glad you spoke your mind on here. People can be cruel and well... jealous. You're doing good things on here and inspiring MANY people to organize their homes and lives. Keep up the fantastic work. I HEART your blog! :)

  46. Just chiming in to say PLEASE keep doing what you are doing...I'm addicted to the happy feeling that this blog provides me!

  47. Although I've been following your blog for over a year now, thows os my first comment. First I just wanted to say how mich I absolutely love your blog. I don't have kids of my own, but you've been an inspiration for me on helping my parents get their place updated and organized. Thanks for all your hardwork! :)

Secondly, I'm sorry that you received such harsh negativity. That's never fun to have to deal with. Just know that there are people out there that truly heart you and your blog.

If you feel that having an editor would help in any way, I want to offer my help. I've edited books and blogs for friends for years, plus I'm an ESL teacher, so I tend to notice the little things that most don't.

    *hugs*

    ReplyDelete
  48. I'm not on facebook so didn't see any of the comments, but I'm sure it all stemmed from someone being envious of you! By the way, have you ever noticed that people who like to police others' grammatical errors tend to be the most unhappy, miserable people you will ever meet? ;)

    ReplyDelete
  49. I have been enjoying your blog for a long time. I have two points for you and for your readers. Actually two and a half little morsels to share with the class ;)
First of all, if a person has a negative opinion they feel cannot be held back or aired privately (via email to you personally)...let them- it's pretty obvious to the rest of us what that is about. It's yuck of them. Poor them. Making you feel like a victim on your own blog is far worse in my book then a petty little grammar oversight. I'd rather be the nice girl than the petty perfect grammar girl. Comments meant to sting are just adult bullying. Glad you aren't going to allow bullies around here...more about that in a sec. The funny part about all this-- that the comment was made ANONYMOUSLY...I mean, doesn't that just say it all?
2)I was a member on a birth board for a long time. This can happen when women get together. Jealously turns into open bitterness and malicious comments ensue. It's no fun to be around. You know what else? It makes others uncomfortable about posting because we are afraid we to will be cut down for little mistakes.
And fair warning, when I read a negative comment on a board like this posted by a no-name...it's permission to assume his/her house is a disaster of epic proportions and lacks any kind of creativity or loveliness...big deal he/she can spell!
2b) To the other no-name who commented and said to take the feedback constructively- we are human...the comment written was not constructive it was a public insult with hurtful intent. The comment would not have been allowed in the workplace.

Jen, I want you to know that a friend and I are really inspired by your blog. We were talking the other day on our way out shopping and figured out we both follow you and we are close by you too, you know. We'd be happy to bring you out for coffee anytime. You keep that pretty chin up, you cannot control other people's insecurity or jealousy. Think of their dirty, grimy house and just pity them.

  51. Love your blog!! Keep it up!!

  52. Not sure what went down, but you handled it with grace. If I were of a gushier nature this is where I would say something along the lines of Oh my goodness! I just gush, gush, gush heart your blog etc. Being a non-gusher, please know that I enjoy your work very much. If I didn't, I wouldn't read it. Hello. Why is it that negative nellies can't figure out how to gracefully exit without running their mouth and verbally throwing up all over? LOL Anyway, blessings to you and yours. It's a beautiful, classy blog run by a generous, gracious woman.

  53. For what it's worth, I absolutely love this blog. Of all the more popular ones I read, your's is easily the best as far as content goes, both in your posts and in the comparison to the amount of sponsor posts/item pushing. Half the reason I read your posts is because I don't have to sift through all of that to find the good stuff! The other half being that I think you're absolutely amazing, of course =)

You do a fantastic job, and I hope you're still posting 20 years from now.

    ReplyDelete
  54. Jen I am so sorry this happened to you. I didn't see what was said and can understand that hurtful comments are...well hurtful, but you are such an incredible person with a beautiful blog that shares so much inspiration. Keep up the amazing work and try to ignore those negative nay-sayers. You are AMAZING!

    ReplyDelete
  55. Get it, girl!! I agree 110% with every word you said. It's hard for me to wrap my head around the fact that people like that actually exist and think it's ok to act the way they do. Meh. Anyway, keep on keepin' on!!!

    ReplyDelete
  56. I love your blog!!!! It's so inspirational. Please don't worry about the negative comments as it's just other people's jealousy!!! They are wishing to be doing what you are doing or what you have!!! Keep up the good work!

  57. Bravo! Good girl putting your power lips back on. :-) All the best.

  58. Sorry to hear the negativity in the world hit so close to home this morning. Your response had clarity and perspective. We all need regular reminders to keep the civility in our online dialogue (and our in person dialogue!), so thanks for being the one to remind us all this time. Well said, Jen!

  59. Jen: love your blog! I look forward to your posts every day. Its bright, fun, so easy to read and find my way around! I love it, love you, love your style and ideas and all your hard work. Keep in keeping on!
    And...Happy Birthday!!!!!!!

  60. Jen, I love you blog!! This blog was my FIRST intro into the blog world or even the DIY world! And personally I have loved every min of it! I have this one and several others (from your recommendations) marked as favorites now and I can't wait to check in daily to see what's up. I've been inspired to make things that I've never made (like curtains), redo rooms that I was lost in (like my play room) and all out organize better for myself and my family. Without you that wouldn't be possible. Keep your head up, like you said you can't please everyone!

  61. I missed the drama on this blog, although another blog I read had some along the same lines yesterday. I see this every so often on blogs I frequent and as a reader I am always left to wonder why read it if it is bothering you or you are not truly enjoying what is being written.

At the risk of being a repetitive comment, I do love your blog. Every single thing about it :)

    ReplyDelete
  62. I'm sorry to say that this post made me sick. To think that people would come to your blog and post anything but happy thoughts disgusts me. You give so many great and helpful ideas not to mention tutorials, printables, and giveaways. I love every single thing about your blog. Your blog should be YOUR creative outlet and if people enjoy then great if not they should go elsewhere and feel free to not leave hurtful comments. I wish there was a way to keep a blog public but be able to blog people who say hurtful things. Best wishes! :)

    ReplyDelete
  63. I want you to know that I LOVE your blog! YOU rock at what you do, and I will be implementing some of your amazing organizing ideas! I read daily, and I love every minute of it :)

    ReplyDelete
  64. Jen, you are an amazing woman. I know hurtful words are hard to ignore, but know that those people are outnumbered a million to one here. As for feeling like you must post something additional on your sponsor-post days, don't worry about it. If we don't want to read the sponsor post, it's not too hard to skip it, and I'm pretty sure our day will not end if there isn't anything else to read. As many have already said, thank you for the wonderful inspiration to make our homes the best they can be. :o)

    ReplyDelete
  65. I truly love your blog. You are one of my idols when it comes to being organized. When I sit down to look at my favorite blogs... YOURS is always FIRST! Try not to get discouraged. Keep up the good work!!!

    ReplyDelete
  66. I just want to tell you thank you for all the time you put into this blog. Your blog is one that I "blog-stalk". I think what you do is amazing and inspiring. Organizing is my biggest weakness and I've been working on it. I love scrolling through your posts to get ideas. On days when I don't feel motivated, I just click on to your blog, and I instantly get the nudge I need to get up and beautify my home. So thank you!! Please don't ever stop!! :)

    ReplyDelete
  67. Props for this post, Jen! I, for one, haven't even noticed any grammar errors on your blog. And honestly, if it bugs someone that much, they should probably just move on and find another fabulous organizing blog to follow (although highly doubtful that they'd ever find one as great as yours!). I love your blog, and the ads/sponsor posts don't bother me at ALL. In fact, I wish that I had more than 4 followers on my blog so I could post things like this on mine! :) Keep up the fabulous job, and don't forget to take some time for your family, especially those three mini-Jens :).

    ReplyDelete
  68. It's really too bad you had to write this post, but I'm glad you addressed it...not so much for all of us that love your blog, but for your sanity. I would have lost sleep until I wrote the post too, so I'm glad you did it!

I look forward to your posts every week. you've inspired me to make sure my organizing solutions are pretty too.

Thank you for being so conscientious!

    ReplyDelete
  69. I don't usually post on this blog because as soon as I see the ideas, I immediately start brainstorming/stalking the internet for ways to recreate (or dream about) the things you do! This seems to be the way things go in the blog world... people can share their opinions - good or bad. Unfortunately, the bad ones are hurtful and usually not helpful/constructive at all. I'm so sorry you had to deal with this. Even though I've never met you, you seem like the sweetest person and I just can't imagine why people would be harsh and cruel! I fully support you blogging and being sponsored and I hope you are able to move on from this and pour your energy into organizing!

  72. Jen - I appreciate your honesty so much and can completely understand what you're saying about negative feedback making you want to cry. I didn't see the thread you're referring to, but I did read your post about things you wanted to change and read the comments as well. Even when you ask for feedback, it can be hard to hear when people don't like things, so you're brave for even putting yourself out there in the first place! Personally, I liked everything you had going on with the blog, but now I'm loving all the new changes and look forward to seeing what else you do! :)

I clicked over to your Facebook page and saw that it's your birthday, so I hope you have a HAPPY BIRTHDAY and don't let this kind of thing get you down on such a great day! :)

  73. Someone said something to me recently that changed the way I view negativity (NOT kindly meant constructive criticism).

They told me "Some people complain just to know they are alive." It's not about you. It's their own deal.

I agree with you about deleting that sort of negativity. Your place on the web is YOURS. Keep it in line with who you are. Delete that junk. :)

p.s. I cancelled my FB acct so have no idea what went on. But can only imagine.

  74. Rock on, Jen!! I just found your blog a few days ago and am completely hooked. Thanks for all the inspiration and don't let the losers get you down. You are truly fabulous!!

PS: Have you seen this blog disclosure policy? Pure awesomeness.

    ReplyDelete
  75. I don't know what happened, but I know other bloggers have felt the same as you when it comes to negative comments and feedback that are beyond constructive or helpful. We should all use the same policy that mother's have been passing down for generations- If you don't have anything nice to say, don't say anything at all! As to having sponsors, no one is forced to purchase any of the products you support or read any of the ads on your blog.

I love your blog, and I think you do an amazing job of inspiring people to have organized homes. We all know how a little organization goes a long way in making our lives happier and less stressed. Keep up the good work!

  76. It actually scared me to death to read this! I'm a newbie at blogging and have so much to learn. Not only do I realize I'm probably blogging to long, but my camera sucks! I will NEVER ask for comments about my blog. Your blog seems so superior over mine, that I can't imagine you even getting a negative comment. Your blog inspired me to give this blogging thing a shot. I love organizing...and hopefully I, too have a lot of ideas. My grammar isn't perfect...but whatever! I think your blog is absolutely amazing! I'm adding my blog link...I hope you don't mind. Keep on doing what you are doing!!

  78. Although I read your blog religiously (I check my Blogger Dash 3 or 4 times a day and am always ecstatic when you have new posts!) I have never commented before and now feels like the perfect time.
I adore your blog! I think you have managed to make a blog that is so positive and happy and honest. You've made a little home here in cyberspace, and I love to stop by and visit. I'm sorry there are people that do not see or get the beauty and honesty you bring into the blogging world; their loss. You have created something wonderful and you certainly always manage to brighten my day!

  79. I'm a fairly new reader and I just wanted to say that I love your blog and wish to one day be this organized. I will admit that I am a grammar police at times, but never have I noticed anything on your page, nor would I ever be rude about it. I don't think your grammar should be taken so seriously when what this blog is about- organizing, the home, family- is so inspirational. Keep on doing what you're doing and disregard what the critics say. Your blog is fantastic!

    ReplyDelete
  80. First, I love your blog! Obsessed with it. I thinks sometimes people forget that bloggers are real people who are kind and gracious enough to share their lives, homes, and families with us. I mean, I feel like I have been to your house! As a blogger, I try to turn around any criticism into something positive, but man is that hard!! and there is also a difference between being constructive and just being snarky. Snarkiness is a no no, and should just not be tolerated under any circumstances.
Keep doing what you are doing - I love every post!!

    ReplyDelete
  81. I read this quote at Simple Mom once and have come to love it, seems it applies here:

*Note: this is a grace-filled place, and I don’t have much room for nonconstructive criticism of others. I’d rather hear the positives of your choices, not your negative opinions of others’ choices. Ad hominem will be deleted."

Of course I had to look up Ad hominem, means negativity, personal attacks, etc. I love how the author simply wrote 'Ad hominem will be deleted." In other words "Negativity, personal attacks-will be deleted. As if it were never written."

I'm new to the Blog. I heart it. And it looks like there are many others who heart it too. Forget the 'Ad hominem' - just delete it. ;)

    Your NEW friend,

  82. Jen- You are a true writer. Your personality shines through in every post, and your readers feel like you are their friend. I've noticed a few little mistakes but I find them endearing because that's part of who you are. Your energy and enthusiasm are inspiring. Don't change a thing!

    ReplyDelete
  83. Wow! I have no idea what went on (I just recently started following) but it sounds totally lousy and I'm sorry you went through it. I'm guess it had something to do with sponsor posts or something - I have to say I like sponsor posts. I usually discover something new that I didn't know about so it's nice to hear about new companies or products. Maybe that's just me - hope not. Keep up the great work!

  84. You go, girl! Your blog is on my daily "Must Read" list. I love that you post everyday, and in fact, sometimes I wonder how you get it all done. You are an inspiration to me and your blog is helping me be a better homemaker and mom. Thank you for all you do!

  85. If peeps are so worried about your grammar skills, I'll proof your posts for free. Geesh. I was a grammar tutor, so I know my stuff. I love your blog. I love the colors. I think you rock. Boo-hiss to anybody who doesn't think so. xoxo

  86. Jen,

All I can say is, thank you for sharing yourself with us and your organizational skills, proper grammar or not. Proper puncuation or not. People that focus on your grammar, puncuation, etc., are not truly focusing on what your are putting out there. I absolutely love your blog and feel like I know you personally. Please don't apologize for your "flaws", I love them! They make you easier to identify with and they are what make us all unique. Not everyone is willing to put themself under a microscope, so to speak. You are just "chalk" full of ideas and I love it! My slogan to my baby girls is "Be you, be beautiful!" So may you and your amazing blog, "be you and be beautiful!"

    ReplyDelete
  87. And, one more thing...your new cursive is not "hideous"! ;)

    ReplyDelete
  88. Kudos to you, being able to stay positive! I didn't see any of the comments you're speaking of but it sounds really petty. I don't have a blog but read many. I have always thought a blog is more like the spoken word, than the written word. It's more like how you would speak with your friends and very few people speak in a formal, grammatically correct way. Besides it is nice to be able to pick up on a blogger's personality when they write in a conversational way. I discovered your blog a couple of months ago and have learned a lot of tips that I have started to put to use. Keep up the good work!

    ReplyDelete
  89. Jen - I HEART your blog the most! Reading your blog everyday is one of the highlights of my day! I love the organizing tips, the colors, the happiness, everything! And, seriously, your blog is the first thing that has EVER inspired me to be organized. And that is saying a lot!! You make it so much fun!

Also, I admire the fact that you have sponsors. You're a talented, creative blogger, but you're also a businesswoman supporting your family. Of course you have sponsors!

You have a great thing going here, and anyone who can't see that is seriously missing out! You should be very proud of what you've accomplished!

    ReplyDelete
  90. Hi Jen,

I've been reading your blog for a while and it is definitely one of my daily to-dos. I like your style of writing and feel like you're talking to us as a friend...it is very informal and fun! I realize that you were hurt with the comment(s) about your writing level and such and you definitely have the liberty of deleting any posts that hurt your feelings since it is your blog.

I've noticed some negative or critical comments on other blogs and most of the time, the blogger just doesn't respond (if it is really petty), will address it lightheartedly or ask for feedback. I wonder if that might be an option for you. Maybe you could say, "thanks for catching that-it's been corrected" or "I'm happy to be writing at even a 5th grade level after being with toddlers all day - thanks for the feedback."

I guess what I'm trying to say is, as your blog becomes more popular and people become more invested in it, they are going to give feedback which may come off as harsh or hurtful sometimes. I'm hopeful that the response won't always be "delete." I think that YHL does a really great job at responding to their negative comments (which can be quite a few on certain posts).

Thanks for all your inspiration and allowing us into your life!

    ReplyDelete
  91. I will echo what so many others have said:

    1. I was an English major and have read countless writing/grammar books. I have noticed an error here or there in your blog, but they are not common, extremely minor, and not distracting from your content (which is FANTASTIC!). You express yourself well and have a unique, endearing writing style. That is much more valuable to your readers than grammatic perfection.

    2. I like the sponsor posts. I have found products I never would have known about otherwise.

Please keep doing exactly what you are doing! You have inspired me in so many ways (my junk drawer is organized for the first time in my life!!). Thank you for your energy, creativity, and buoyant optimism.

    ReplyDelete
  92. I have just started following this blog and am really happy I found it. I just don't get why anybody feels the need to express themselves in this way. Sure, we all come across things that annoy us sometimes but a blog is like looking at someone's personal diary. It is hard to put your ideas out there. If you don't like anything about it, just move on and take your nastiness with you. Nasty, personal attacks are not meant to be helpful. They are just a self serving act of a sad, sad person. I know it would really cut if I had that response so I hope you can move past it and forget about it! I am not gushy either (as someone else mentioned) but I think you have a beautiful blog and I hope you make bucket loads of money doing what you love!

    ReplyDelete
  93. Wow, sounds like someone expressed their anger at the world at your blog instead which doesn't make since to me since I can think of a million more controversial or troll worthy sites. But these things are bound to happen and at least you have a following of loyal internet friends, like me. :) That and the admin delete button it a great thing! Feel free to send any bad news trolls my way so I can have the satisfaction of laughing maniacally while deleting their post. And lastly thank you for all the great posts, sponsor posts and all! Three cheers for you, huzzah, huzzah , huzzah! I love that "word/expression/sound"

    Happy Blogging!

We all have days like these and in the end it just reminds you not to sweat the small stuff. Your blog is awesome and I think your doing a great job.

  100. Jen -

Kind of funny but this is the first post of yours that I have read {I found you today via a friend on Facebook} and I wanted to kick whomever hurt you and I don't even know you very well yet!

And honestly? I'm glad to know that your posts will have typos and grammar oops-es!! If there's a {hater}, they need to go get a hobby and stop pestering you! Besides, if there weren't typos and grammar issues, I would worry that you were Martha Stewart in disguise!! LOL!!

Just thought I would share a smile =) and now I am off to spend my weekend finding inspiration in your blog to take my "blah" house and make it awesome! So glad I found you!

    Have a wonderful weekend!!

I know that I certainly am a daily or every other day visitor; you have actually given me the organizing bug again, and I have taken many of your ideas and incorporated them in one way or another to suit my needs! :)

I did not see the thread, but you were obviously very hurt, but like you said you cannot please everyone. You are definitely doing something right in my and MANY other people minds!

I look forward to your next post! :)

  103. Because of you, my home feels better than ever. I always get some kind of motivation or inspiration from you! It's been SO helpful! I could care less about imperfection. Glad you are putting it behind you. I can't believe how rude some people can be. I adore you and blog, so thank you so much for all of the time and energy you put into it!

    ReplyDelete
  104. Your grammer is great! I'm a blogger and grammer and spelling happens to be something that I 'get' (but I don't get maths!) so I notice immediately when people don't use it correctly. But not only have I never noticed any mistakes in your posts, but I think its pretty rude for people to point it out - you're putting time and energy into writing these posts!

    ReplyDelete
  105. It baffles me that someone would come onto your personal blog that you are willingly sharing with us (no strings attached) and leave judgemental remarks. Please don't allow anything to steal the joy you have in writing your blog. What an incredible blessing that your blog (which I'm pretty sure you began with friends/family and neighbours in mind) has grown to the point where you are able to have spomsors! Amazing!!! I love your blog, I have for a very long time. Thank you for all the hard work you put into it! :)

  107. jen, its a shame when others miss the message because they are so focused on what youre doing "wrong". everyone cannot be happy all of the time but if they visit and arent happy most of the time i dont know why they dont stop reading. i know i have. i read several blogs and as my needs and interests change so does my reader feed. there is no reason for anyone to lash out at you (and soooo many others). its your place, its your home and life that youre sharing.. i know preaching to the choir. all that to say, you have to live your life the best way for you and your clan. could you imagine being invited to someones home and complaining and correcting?
    i'm ranting, sorry.
god bless you and dont let idiots and their comments "eat you up".

  108. Hi Jen,

I know I'm late to the party, I somehow missed this post before! I am so sorry to hear that people were causing trouble on your Facebook page.

I just wanted to post and say that I am a writer and currently employed as a sub-editor - so I get paid to pick on grammatical and spelling errors. And you know what? Sometimes I make exactly the same mistakes myself!

In fact, my dad had to point out to me that in the first story I ever posted on my blog, I had written grateful as "greatful" *sigh*. Thank goodness for the "Edit" button ;-)

Nobody is perfect, we are all human, and the fact is this is a blog about organising and beautifying - not spelling and grammar. If it was the latter, then people could perhaps be excused for holding you to a higher standard than they would themselves.

I enjoy your blog, and while I have noticed the occasional mixed up word (subbing has become second nature to me) it does not detract from my experience as a reader in the slightest. Keep doing what you're doing for as long as you're loving what you're doing :-)

    ReplyDelete
  109. I don't know if someone posted this or not, but this is a tip a teacher told me about loose and lose. When you see th two O's in loose, think of a "loose" woman (you know the kind that likes to show more than you want to see.) ;)

    Love your blog!

  110. Hi Jen,

I have benefited GREATLY from your blog. I don't have a blog anymore, but if I did, I would be posting all the iheartorganizing inspired things I've done in my own home. The wonderful thing about it you, is you make it possible for those of us with several children, on a budget, and are inclined to do things ourselves, just because it's fun. Your blog is always bright, cheerful and uplifting. You have a "You can do it!" attitude and I always come away from your posts inspired, or in awe!
I had a blog for 3 years, and I did get some criticism. It can be hard to accept, but for every 1 negative comment, I would get 10 positive ones. It's hard to deal with the fact that not everyone likes you! But I like you :)

Again, thanks for dedicating such time and energy to this space. I for one do not have a problem with the sponsor posts, in fact, they are helpful to me because I don't really have time to check them all out separately, so when you do a post on them then I am intrigued to go to their sites.

    Blessings,
    Jessica

  111. Oh my gosh! I missed a lot while I was traveling, apparently.

Wow. I'm sorry you had a negative experience with a commenter...that can be such a total downer. It shocks me, because you're so happy and positive on your blog - and who would want to bring that down!?

And to Anonymous Comment #40, who says that because it's your job to blog, you need to do better quality control, I disagree. Simply becuase you are saying straight up that you freakin' try your best. And none of us are perfect. And if they don't like it they don't need to read it. Gah.

They also mention that in a "real" job you have to take criticism about the quality of your work. No kidding. But in that office job it wouldn't be ok to give critiques in a mean and hurtful manner.

Oh, this frustrates me so. I guess I'll shut up now. Sorry you had a rough day / week last week. :( xoxo!

    ReplyDelete
  112. i'm really sorry to here that some old grump took the time out of their day to try and ruin yours, so unkind and unnecessary. My mom used to always say "consider the source" when someone said or did something hurtful. Although you likely don't even know this commenter, I hope you at least know that someone thoughtless and mean-spirited enough to post whatever it was they posted that hurt you is probably a pretty unhappy and dissatisfied person in real life all the time.

I am CRAZY about your blog and it brightens my day to read it, so please don't take it to heart.

I just wanted to say that I feel your pain. In this digital world, there is so much more room for people to spread their cancerous attitudes. I take things really personally and have been in a high profile the last couple of years. I am not the kind of person that should be in a job like this. I can't make anyone happy (I have several different customers---Corporate, my employees and the customers)...It is hard to wake up and face that type of thing when you are a kind person who would never do anything to hurt anyone else's feelings etc. You are right, the odds are, you're going to get the negative nellys with the amount of traffic you get each day. Just try and remember, the people that take the time to stop and say mean things are unhappy with their own lives and they are trying to project it on to someone else. Part of what I have had to deal with is negative reviews on the Internet as a result of one unhappy customer who pretended to be a different person each time. This person made mean (UNTRUE) comments about me and I could do nothing about it. NOTHING. But, I just tried to tell myself that this person had some serious problems and I should feel sorry for her. It didn't always work but it made me feel better. The good news is, when you feel that deep, pit-of-your-stomach feeling---go read all of the comments that bring you UP. So many people love your site and that is what you need to focus on. I am so sorry you have that happen, it really is so...well, mean. Just know, you are not alone and you are appreciated.

    :)

  115. I follow a blog called Peanut Butter Fingers and she has posted about negativity on her blog too. She even did a presentation with some other bloggers at some healthy living conference. It is so said that bloggers even have to deal with this. As a reader if there is something I don't like all I have to do is close the screen. There is never a need to attack a blogger for her posts. Anyone who takes the time to cross the line from constructive critisim (I know I spelled it wrong) to just plain being mean really are not worth your time. Those people have bigger issues then a blog they are not happy with. It's easier for them to take it out on a blogger, someone they can't see or talk to. It's ridiculous. Keep your head held high and know your supporters far outweigh the Debbie Downers.

  118. It saddens me that popular bloggers, more often than not, eventually have to post an entry such as this. Don't let the negativity get to you. You've got a truly wonderful blog and I'd be sad to see you get to the gall point and abandon it.

I've just recently found your blog and I've been scouring it with inner giddiness at all the inventive organization tips. Keep up the amazing work and pooh-pooh to the negative turds.

p.s. the grammar police are just grown up bullies that like to make people feel crappy. Ignore them.

  119. Well...personally...I love your sponsors and your giveaway posts when you try a new product! I am working so hard at getting organized...and I am not good at searching the internet, and I am not creative...at all!! So when you put things on that may help me in my venture...I very much appreciate it!! And if it weren't for you... I never would have found "thirty-one"...which I absolutely love love love!!!

  120. I recently discovered your blog. I've been slowly reading your previous posts one at a time...I don't want to miss A THING! I had been thinking of whether or not to send you a private email explaining some grammatical issues that I noticed you struggled with. I'm glad I stumbled on this post...it really put things in perspective for me! I am AMAZINGLY good at spelling and grammer...I would proofread my Dad's college papers for him while I was in high school..lol. It just comes naturally to me....HOWEVER, I am NOTORIOUSLY late, unorganized, harried, hurried, frazzled, etc, etc.. despite my best efforts to the contrary. Yesterday I was admonished to the point of tears by my OB for missing an appointment. (I honestly think she was having a bad day, it was EXTREMELY inappropriate). I had to call my hubby from the parking lot, I couldn't drive because I was crying so hard! I was telling him that I was sick of being ME...(see above adjectives). But hearing you describe your inability to discern between apostrophe placements and similarly pronounced words, is EXACTLY how I feel about things that come so naturally to you; organizing, planning, time management. I. Just. Don't. Get. It. You sound as though you've come to terms with your grammatical shortcomings (insignificant as they are), and you've inspired me (once again) to find some peace in mine as well! I'm working on it, but just as you should not be made to feel bad about something you cannot change, I shouldn't either. Thank you so much for this post! You deserve every moment of happiness that you gain from this blog and the work that you do!

    (Super big, supportive) hugs,
    Anna

  121. I LOVE your blog, I've become totally addicted to checking it every single day, and have used so many of your ideas.....The reason you have such a successful blog is because of your organizing skills, and frankly that's why people love it! Keep it up, we love ALL of your posts, and you know that old saying, what doesn't kill you makes your stronger, you go girl!!

  122. The nosy in me sooo wants to know what was said. I am a spelling/grammar fanatic, and when I read certain blogs with consistent, bad spelling errors, it DOES drive me crazy. Yours is NOT one of them. Jen, yes I catch them, but your spelling mistakes are so minuscule that I have no idea why anyone would come down on you about it. And FYI, the fact that you state it regularly that you know you goof sometimes discredits anyone who wants to criticize you. You have the best blog everrrrrrrr!!
