60 Basement Progress - A Completed Coat Hook!

YAY!  Two projects done in one week.  I am on FIRE!

So far, I have shared with you my future studio and my first project which included organizing my desk space.  I also included some inspiration I found on Pinterest:

Can you guess from the title which one of these projects I can check off of my list?

{source}

I was so excited to fix this little problem....

So I started scouring our home, eBay, thrift stores and home depot for different decorative knobs to use... I figured I would splurge on one Anthropologie knob just for that over the top awesomeness!

Which is just what I did.  I actually found an Anthropologie knob on eBay and one at a thrift store of all places {who would ever get rid of one and why?!}, lucky me!  I then purchased this one directly from the store.

We started by measuring our wall area and cutting the piece of new rail to size.  We used a 4 1/2" piece of primed mdf board.

I just picked a height based off of what felt right.  No measuring needed.

But we couldn't attach it to the wall just yet.  We needed to have a plan on how to lay out the knobs and how to affix them so they would be nice and strong for holding all sorts of totes, sweaters and camera bags.

Two of our knobs had the typically knob screw hardware and the three Anthro knobs were much longer screw backs... hmmm....

So, we took the length of the board, divided it by six to determine our spacing of the five knobs evenly across, marked it with pencil and pre-drilled all of the holes.

Then, for the two with the typical screw hardware, we just countersunk the back so it was all flush and affixed the knob.

For the other ones, we first attached the piece of wood to the wall with an air nailer, nailing right into all of the studs across the entire length.

Then, pre-drilling again, this time right into the walls behind the board.

Now we could just screw the Anthro knobs right through the board and into the wall!

Once all was up and secure, we puttied the air nail holes with white caulk and wiped it down with a magic eraser.

I love the visual interest the new rail adds to the space, with all of the different knob types!!

And a view straight on:

But the real question.  Does it work?!  Is it strong?

I gave all the knobs a really good tug and everything felt secure enough that I almost hung on them with my own weight.  Although I didn't think that would be too smart... but I do think it could hold me if I tried... I think.

And messy everything on the floor problem solved!!  Can I get a WAHOO?!

Now that I have this awesome knob hook rail thing, I need some really awesome art for above it... onto the next project!!

So what do you think?  Anyone else itching to do the same thing?  How about something else you found on Pinterest lately?  Who is tackling a Pinterest inspired project this weekend?

  1. So cute! And great idea drilling into the wall to accommodate the knobs with the longer screws! I was wondering how you were going to remedy that. :)

  6. Love it! The knobs are great. I need one of these. My purse, tote bag, and camera bag are always hanging on the dining chairs. Right now I'm working on some pillow covers and later tonight I plan on making some felt flowers. Both ideas from Pinterest, of course.

  7. I Heart this project Jen!!! I think I might have to do a similar project like this in my bedroom or in my office as well. I'm thinking both places maybe. I'm going to "Pin" your project tonight on Pinterest and keep it in my DIY to do list. Heart those knobs so much!!! Gorgeous!!!

  8. Oh my I absolutely love this Jen! It is so pretty and the knobs you scored are awesome. I haven't never considered making one but we do have a blank wall in our room and all of our house robes (ha, we have several) are hung on the back of the door and its annoying. Oh Jen, you just inspired me to add another project to my list. Thanks so much:)

  9. Awesome! I'm going to do that for my apron collection in the kitchen but I think I might go with all the same knobs, or at least matching. I love the look of the mismatched items I'm seeing around but my OCD won't allow it lol. Maybe I could just pick a color scheme and buy different shaped and shaded knobs.

  12. Great project! I am so going to copy this idea. Maybe I'll use the knobs to hang necklaces too!

  13. Very nicely done, Jen! I love the various knobs, especially the rose. I'd like to attempt something like that in my future home. =)

As far as wall art, here are a few ideas I've pinned:

    1.) http://www.flickr.com/photos/postroadvintage/4786719716/
I LOVE re-purposed window frames. I think they are the perfect combination of romantic, classic, rustic and cool. Maybe do something like that?

    2.) http://www.etsy.com/listing/73325721/sale-bird-art-2-birds-in-a-tree-birds-on?ref=sr_gallery_4&ga_search_submit=&ga_search_query=bird+art&ga_view_type=gallery&ga_ship_to=US&ga_page=3&ga_search_type=all&ga_facet=
I love birds, and music. I'm an artist too, so I will be attempting something like this in the near future. It has a peaceful, yet creative feel to it, I think!

    3.) http://www.etsy.com/listing/77751424/48x24-original-modern-abstract-heavy
This is just too cool! I wouldn't do those exact colors, but I LOVE the theory.

Anyway, thanks for all your amazing inspiration. I really identify with your organization style and I think we have similar tastes as well. I'm following you now on pinterest, and you are welcome to check mine out to see if there's anything else I've pinned that might be useful to you. =)

  15. Hi, I like the project and the knobs you chose. For myself, it would drive me nuts to have five DIFFERENT knobs... But it's certainly an eye-catcher!

  16. Love it! Some friends and I are challenging ourselves to do one "Pinterest inspired" project each month. I started us a Facebook group: "Pin"-up Girls where we can post pictures of our projects and reviews of the process/outcome. I can't wait to get started!

  21. That turned out fabulous! Love it.

  22. This turned out great! I like how you gave it your own personal touch. I think it would look CUTE with a small shelf right above it also, and a large image on top. Maybe you could do some custom art based on the green knob - that one is my fav ;)

  23. I love the different knobs! Great work!

  24. Oh I love it! This is actually the same idea I had for a little nook in our playroom. I am changing it into a dress up nook for my daughters and I am going to create the same kind of coat hook for all their princess dresses! Great minds think alike ;)

  25. When I saw this on your pinterest idea post it didn't really catch my eye. Seeing it in place makes me rethink my initial opinion. Hmmmm, maybe this is what my back hallway needs afterall. Shhh, don't let my daughter know she was right. I'll never hear the end of it. LOL

  26. Love this! My master closet has the same type of board and I added some great key shaped hooks, but I think I should add a few others for some variety. ;)

What is the yellow/green bag? It looks fabulous!

  27. I think a large version of The Single Nester's new project with the paint chips would look awesome! I can't link it from my phone (can't figure out how to paste the link). :(
I LOVE the project though! It looks great!

  30. I love it! I would never think to mix knobs like that, but it looks perfect.

I just discovered your blog the other day, and it's become my happy place. I'm moving next week, and looking at lovely organized pictures is helping ease the pain of boxes all over the place! :)

  31. Love this!!! I just pinned this to my board! Thank you!!!

    ReplyDelete
  32. This is fantastic! I pinned that picture too and I am planning on doing something like this in my entryway. :)

    ReplyDelete
  33. I love it! I would love to do the same in my entry behind my door but need to come up with a good plan. It is a long wall and I don't want the board to run the whole length. Off to Pintrest to see if I can find inspiration!

  34. Such a great idea with all different knobs!! I love that effect!

  35. Where did you get that desk? I am looking for something that will be able to hide my modem and router and all the cords!

    ReplyDelete
  36. ooh I love this! What was the estimated total cost of this project? I'm so excited to try it out :)

    ReplyDelete
  37. Thanks so much everyone! Love the art suggestions!

The Laundry Room Rug {although it's since doubled in price since I purchased it}: http://www.urbanoutfitters.com/urban/catalog/productdetail.jsp?itemdescription=true&itemCount=80&startValue=1&selectedProductColor=&sortby=&id=18491175&parentid=A_FURN_RUGS&sortProperties=+subCategoryPosition,+product.marketingPriority&navCount=55&navAction=poppushpush&color=&pushId=A_FURN_RUGS&popId=A_DECORATE&prepushId=&selectedProductSize=

The Wall Color is Behr's Prelude.

The Yellow Bag is my JoTotes Millie Camera Bag: http://jototes.com/handbags/millie-marigold

    The Desk: http://www.ikea.com/us/en/catalog/products/80213074

And the total cost of the project cost us the piece of wood {about $15}, and the misc hardware, which I believe totaled $20 using knobs we had combined with some splurges. The cost could be much less if you already have the supplies, use plain knobs {even spray paint them?}, etc...

    happy organizing!

  40. As far as art to put above it, I'd do a long narrow canvas that says something about what you want for the space, something that will inspire you while you're down there, especially since it's right next to the desk where you'll be blogging :) I just did one at reallifestorybook.com for my daughter, for her bedroom and it's SO adorable. I'll post pictures on my blog when it gets here and I get it on the wall!

  41. I've just finished a Pinterest-inspired dry erase board project: painting an old window and adding scrapbooking paper behind the panes - using the glass as the dry-erase board. I post our weekly schedule and menu and it's working great for the family!

  42. Just found your final project pinned on pinterest. hehehe. love that site! Definitely inspirational. It keeps me coming back to blogs I love (I'm a regular reader, but hadn't seen this new post yet!) and it is a great way to keep all those ideas that were buzzing in my head in one spot. Love it! I've tackled a few DIY items from pinterest inspiration, and made some DELICIOUS desserts. Currently I'm planning my nursery inspiration (baby girl #2 due in November!)

  55. Screw in the coat hook by hand or use padded pliers for the last few turns to secure the hook to the wall. Rotate hook so it is facing upward.
