Oh yeah! Last year I was really Spicin' Things Up in the Kitchen! It was Hot Hot! Nope, the hubs and I weren't getting all romantical, we were installing tin into our cabinet for our spices! Get your heads out of the gutter!!
It worked. But not INCREDIBLY well. Like every great once in awhile those little spice boogers would decide to try and jump to their death. Only to wind up slightly bruised and placed back into their home. I think the little dents and marks give them character. The hubs just got frustrated. It didn't happen all that often, but we came to the conclusion that potentially the paper we used to cover the tin {in some areas it was doubled up cardstock}, was just too thick. Plus, I am always trying to simplify and one way to do that is to create less clutter on the eyes, so although I adored the splash of color in the cabinet, I now am going for something a little more streamlined.
Magnetic paint has been making its way around blog land, so I thought this would be the perfect spot for me to dabble with the stuff. I started off by removing the cabinet door and tin, only to find that the adhesive we attached the tin left, was definitely going to leave its mark!
So, I whipped out the ol' sanding blog and made it all nice and smooth again!
And can I tell you, I had butterflies about using the magnetic paint. Like giddy school girl butterflies. I always love giving something new a try, it was kind of like going on that first date!
I was surprised to see that it's actually dark, like a magnet. I for some reason was expecting a light/white primer...
I followed the directions, it said it actually sets and is ready for re-coating every 30 minutes. So, I just wrapped up my brush with some plastic wrap and stuck it in the fridge in-between coats. It definitely was a magnetic primer, I didn't even bother trying to salvage the brush at the end of all 5 COATS! Yes, I did 5, just call me a Jedi master because I wanted to be sure that the magnetic force would be strong with this one.
As you can see, I wasn't all that careful about staying in the lines. I knew the whole door was going to be covered with the original paint color in the end anyway. Which is just what I did two days after letting the magnetic primer fully dry on the door.
Yep, those tins are truly magnetic!
And absolutely are sticking to the cabinet, all on their own magnetic goodness! And surprisingly, much better than with the piece of tin that was there prior!!
I just love the simplicity of it now!
You can see that we just line them up to work around the shelves inside the cabinet:
The fun part? Before and After?
Ooh to the la. SO much cleaner looking!
Who else has been playing with magnetic paint? Anyone else totally loving magnetic spice tins?

I almost bought magnetic paint a few weeks ago to do a recipe holder inside one of my cabinets. I backed out because it was expensive and I wasn't sure how well it would work. I think I'm going to pick it up next time though. Thanks for letting me know it DOES work. I love this idea & the after is so clean & crisp looking!
ReplyDeleteI like it! I have those same spice containers, but we just have ours stuck to the side of our fridge... which surprisingly doesn't annoy me too much :) But I like that yours are nicely hidden away inside of your cupboard door. Magnetic paint is so awesome.
ReplyDeleteI never knew they had magnetic paint! What a trip! Okay, I'd just like to borrow your imaginative brain for just one day - no, one week - that way, I could really get a lot organized around here. I'd give it back, I promise! Just one week? LOL
ReplyDeleteLove your blog. You inspire me :)

love it! I haven't tried it yet. I still haven't even tried chalkboard paint (oh the horror!). Hoping to do it soon!
ReplyDeleteWhere can you find magnetic spice tins? I'd like to get some that aren't too expensive! Thanks!
ReplyDeleteany kitchen store, Bed &Bath has them & Wal Mart may have them.
DeleteI, too, want to know where to get the tins? I'm ready to do this in my kitchen.
ReplyDeleteI've been wondering about that magnetic paint. So nice to know it REALLY works!!
ReplyDeleteHi Everyone!
ReplyDeleteThe spice containers were found at the Container Store, I think they were around $5 for a pack of three {I don't see these specific ones online, I did however find white: http://www.containerstore.com/shop?productId=10009862&N=&Ntt=spice+container}. Ikea also has a great option for $5: http://www.ikea.com/us/en/catalog/products/80102919
xoxo!

Jen...I have to laugh. Have a look at my spice cupboard:

Look familiar? I got my spice containers at Ikea, though! They work GREAT!

Love the clean, new look!
ReplyDeleteOMG - You might have just solved my spice storage problem! Will have to see if they would fit in the cabinet I have in mind. This issue has been plaguing me for 2 years!! I'll let you know if it works :)
ReplyDeleteWow, you can tell I'm more of a food and fitness blog reader because I've never heard of magnetic paint before!! Looks great Jen! I've also got the same magnetic spice jars, but since the area where I prep things for the stove is right next to the fridge, mine are just stuck on the side. It works - but they do get knocked down by accident from time to time!
ReplyDeleteI haven't tried it yet...just waiting for the right project for it. Looks great, as always Jen!
ReplyDelete-heather
Wow, that's amazing. At first I thought the problem was the magnet on the little tins.. good to know that they actually work!! Thanks for sharing...
ReplyDeleteHi Jen, I am always wow'd. I love everything you do. Such an insiration to so many, even the organization challenged ones like me. I am still in the process of purging. I can hardly wait to start the fun stuff. Keep those ideas coming. Thanks.
ReplyDeleteRhonda @ The Messy Roost
I have used magnetic paint before - I painted a pre-teen girl's bedroom and we made one wall magnetic so she could put up all of her posters without the holes in the wall. It didn't work very well at all. But I see that your paint says is 3X stronger - so I think I will try it again. I love the idea. But is has to work of course. :)
ReplyDeleteThat should keep your sucicidal "spice boogers" in check!
ReplyDeletebahahahaha! <3 great solution!

Jenn @ Peas & Crayons
I haven't jumped on the magnetic paint bandwagon yet, but I have a new love for the magnetic spice tins! I too stick them on the side of my fridge and love how it adds functional artwork to the kitchen!
ReplyDeletehttp://gabrielsgoodtidings.blogspot.com/2011/01/how-to-streamline-your-spices.html
I didn't even know magnetic paint existed! This is so cool!!
ReplyDeleteadventuresofoldandnew.blogspot.com
Fabulous idea! I just love it. I didn't even know about magnetic paint. Truly genius. Can't wait to try this at home!
ReplyDeleteHi Jen,
ReplyDeleteI think this looks fabulous! My only concern is the expiration dates? I'm always worried about catching things before they expire, especially when my husband and I don't go through our spices all that quickly...
Thanks!
Lindsay
Love it!! I've actually been wanting to try this for a while... so glad to see if worked well for you!
ReplyDeleteI had the same question about expiration dates... I've been wanting to switch everything (spices, flour, cereal, etc) out of their packages and into containers but would worry about them expiring with out me knowing. Hmmm maybe you need to create another one of those adorable printables to keep track?? :-)
I love it! (and good to know you don't have anymore suicidal spices! haha!)
ReplyDeleteIt looks great, and that you can even paint over it with the original cabinet paint color....brilliant!
I hadn't heard of magnetic paint before either...just the chalkboard paint (which I haven't tried yet, but think I might do a project for the garage for the kiddos)
Glad the paint worked for you. It is pricey. We had our painters paint our daughter's wall in her room with 3-4 coats of it plus chalkboard paint...the magnetic part was a total flop! Rustoleum did give us our money back. They said anytime a top coat is used over the magnetic paint it can take 6+ coats! At that price, that was not happening!
ReplyDeleteIt's like magic!
ReplyDeleteI've never used magnetic paint but I thought about using it at school (I'm a preschool teacher). I also LOVE those tins. The white actually does look much nicer. :)
ReplyDeleteCrystal
LOVE this idea...going to tackle a pretty large kitchen re-vamp when the kids go back to school...thinking this will need to be a part of the new look! Thanks, as always, for sharing your wonderful ideas!
ReplyDeleteFreshen up my space... I NEED these for my spice cabinet!!! It needs major organizing. I wish I could post a picture of how embarassingly un-organized this space is!!
ReplyDeletearamat_1799@yahoo.com
I see you switched from jars to tupperware for your flour, sugar, etc. Care to share why?
ReplyDeleteI love the look of keeping flour (etc.) in pretty jars, but I'm wondering if you switched because it doesn't work well...?
I was wondering the same thing...I have different tupperware round containers we have used since shortly after we got married...but I also have a bunch of modualr mates...too bad they don't make black lids anymore...
DeleteHa ha, I guess I should have read the next post before commenting here!
ReplyDeletethat is so super-cool! i'll be pinning this idea for future reference for sure. :)
ReplyDelete-h
i'm stunned. i had no idea that magnetic paint existed. i CAN'T wait to start using it. thanks for sharing!
ReplyDeleteVery useful blog of spice cabinet with beautiful images....
ReplyDeleteSpice Cabinet
OK... yes, I love this one even more than the first! Genius! :)
ReplyDeleteHow many coats of the primer do you need? I've put 5 or so on now and while the tins stick, if I close the door even a little bit too hard, they all go flying off. I've tried stronger magnets, but still have the same problem. I'm so bummed!
ReplyDelete@Anonymous,
ReplyDeleteHmmm... are you using the same brand/type? I recall putting on TONS of coats just to be sure {5 I believe, but they were pretty thick coats}. It was also really important to make sure the can was mixed/stirred well. We haven't had any crashing tins, maybe just another coat or two will do the trick?
xoxo,
Jen
Don't buy the magnetic paint in the cans Krylon brand? Got that for ease...but Does not work! And neither did the can of paint at Michaels I thought I could save on with a coupon...bit the dust and bought the kind you got at Home Depot and it worked soooo much better for my project. Thank goodness Michaels let me return the cans or I'd be out alot of money. And the home depot can alittle has gone a long way...
DeleteJust found your blog via Pinterest..I am so hooked! I used to be as organized as you, but life took hold and now I feel a mess!
ReplyDeleteI LOVE this idea! I found larger magnetic tins at Walmart and plan on getting a few sets of the IKEA ones you used also! Love the magnetic paint and have oak cabinets, so I will have to do some creative painting after.
I've found those same tins for less at Pfaltzgraff.com. I love them!
ReplyDeleteThis was a wonderful tip, thank you so much!
DeleteJEN!! I can't believe your spices aren't alphabetized! My spices aren't nearly as organized as yours but I generally keep them alphabetized (easier to grab & go).
ReplyDeleteI wish I would have seen this post a month ago when before I bought my new spice rack I love this look!
ReplyDeleteYou may have just saved my sanity of digging through my cabinet - I loved this...the big thing was to stir and stir and stir the point and when you think you've stirred enough - stir some more!
ReplyDeleteI ended up doing 6 coats but that was because the first coat wasn't very good -- I didn't stir it well enough.
Thank you!!!!!
do you have any suggestions for organizing a baking cupboard? with things such as cupcake wrappers, sprinkles, food coloring, vanilla, icing tips, etc.... I really need to organize my cupcake wrappers as I have tons and tons! please help!
ReplyDeleteI would use small lidded bins with labels. That way you can stack for more space, yet keep the small items corralled. Maybe a basket just for sprinkles. Categorizing is key.

Just bought some magnetic primer! This is going to be my weekend project! Super excited. :]
ReplyDeleteI have the tins from IKEA and have problems storing powdered spices in them when the tins are on their side. The fine powders like cinnamon make a mess when you open them. Anyone else have that problem or a solution?
ReplyDeleteYou would think that they would come with some sort of metal piece to hang them on since not many people have metal cabinets and where else would you hang your spices? But I think the magnetic paint is genius especially since you can cover it with any paint! So pretty!
ReplyDeleteYou can actually use a magnetic knife rack (looks like a plain strip) from Ikea. Asker or Grundtal are two choices. Another poster, Amber Marie, suggested Pfaltzgraff.com, which sells the same magnetic strip and spice tins for less than The Container Store! I think Jen's magnetic cabinet idea is ingenious for those of us who like saving counter and shelf space while still being able to keep our spices hidden. It depends on one's preference.
DeleteI like how this looks neater and cleaner. I was a bit surprised in the original post that you chose a tin sheet to hang them with...I would have used magnetic strips. This is prettier, though!
ReplyDeleteI always thought magnets repel each other. Having the magnetic paint and then the magnets on the spice tins as well confused me. Obviously I must be wrong if it works! I think this will be my weekend project!
ReplyDeleteI LOVE this idea! I have a few of those tins, but we just keep them on the side of the fridge. Our spice cupboard looks exactly like yours did before... 3 shelves, jam packed with an assortment of different sized spice jars and packets. I hate it! I want to do this now but we're renting... I must be patient until we get our own place!!! Saving this idea though! Thanks :)
ReplyDeleteI'm also wondering about the flour containers, they are different than before... why did you change? I just keep it in bags but have thought about containers to keep things fresh.
ReplyDeleteHi Sarah!
DeleteThe other containers were large and didn't fit well in the cabinet and were not easy to take in and out. So I sold them in a garage sale and upgraded to the Tupperware Modular Mates. Love love love them. You can read about it here: iheartorganizing.blogspot.com/2011/06/iheart-modular-mates-giveaway.html

DeleteHi everyone, you can still find the magnetic tins in a pack of 3 at The Container Store for $5.99. Just type in "magnetic spice tins" in the search criteria or go here:
ReplyDeletehttp://www.containerstore.com/shop?productId=10011223&N=&Ntt=magnetic+spice+tins
They don't come up in the results if you just type in "spice jars."
A similar idea popped into my head but I'm so glad I found this. I hadn't thought this through as carefully as your post! Now I just have to convince the hubs to play nice with me :)
ReplyDeleteLOVE this! I'm curious about what you do with the excess spices? Or do the contents of a giant bottle all fit into those cute little magnetic beauties? :)
ReplyDeleteI try and only purchase the smaller sized spices, but when we have excess we just store them on the shelf (as seen by the spice packets), and then we only need to search for them every great once I awhile if we need to refill a canister.

Jen
Hey what is that you're storage you gravy/taco seasoning packets in? I'm trying to find something.

DeleteHi,
ReplyDeleteI love your blog. I am always looking for ways to organize my home, and after coming here, I am so happy to realize that I can always do more and better. May I ask you one question? What are those containers called in which you stored your flour and sugar? I am looking for containers, right now I am just storing them in it's original package and it is a headache every time I need those things. I am really looking to buy Click Clack containers which are similar to oxo pop containers, but expensive. Those glass canisters that you had in the previous photo, they are really tight and hit my fingers whenever I tried opening them. Any ideas appreciated. Thanks. xx
Hi Sana,
DeleteThey are Modular Mates from Tupperware and I totally adore them!
xo,
Jen
I'm so bummed this didn't work. Hubby and I started painting and after 5 coats...it didn't hold a magnet. It took 10 coats to hold a magnet. So I ordered the Container store containers, washed and loaded one up with thyme...and it doesn't hold. At all. The container falls right off. :-( So looks like we may be going the tin route and covering up the paint after all. Such a bummer.
ReplyDeleteOh no! I have heard that some have had much better luck with the magnetic paint than others {very mixed reviews}. I wonder if it is a brand thing, or how well the paint is shaken/stirred? So sorry to hear this didn't work out for you.
Deletexo,
Jen
I have honestly never came across a blog that I am just soo in love with (maybe accept for that 50 shades of Grey fanfiction one) as much as yours! Every post ooze inspiration! Thanks for sharing another great post

Once the actual decorating side of things are done this is my first Kitchen Organising Mission!! I can get the same pots from Ikea for 5 GBP for 3 (not sure on the dollars!) and I'm painting a wall with black magnet paint with a fancy stencil at the top like New York skyline - the kitchen is bright yellow and black/white check floor so quite a NY feel.
ReplyDeleteCan't wait to work my way through your projects - I've got several lined up!
Where can I get ModgePodge in the UK though?
Great idea!! I just finished my very own spice rack using mini 4 oz mason jars. I put a magnetic strip from the container store under my kitchen cabinet and stuck them there out of reach. It was great since my kitchen is tiny tiny tiny.
ReplyDeleteI got inspiration for my project from a cool little trick I picked up from Real Simple. They had an article on organizing the medicine cabinet and their GENIUS idea of putting the magnetic strip on the door of the cabinet to put tweezers and fingernail clippers made my heart happy. You could definitely use the magnetic paint to do the same with your medicine cabinet!!
I had those magnetic spice containers at one point, until one by one they all detached themselves from their magnets! LOL
ReplyDeleteLOVE all your ideas! I've been considering painting my kitchen cabinets, I think if I do I'm going to do the inside of all the doors with the magnetic primer! Thanks for the idea and it looks awesome-
ReplyDeletefrom another Jen :)
