When I revealed our new "built in" bookcase, many of my observant friends noticed my stash of organizing books:
Today I get to boast about my latest organizing read, that I believe to be a "Must Have" for anyone trying to find tips and tricks to get organized!
I am willing to bet that none of you are strangers to Laura who is the ultimate Organizing Junkie! And if you haven't been introduced to her yet, you will adore her site, it's a given, so hop on over!
Well, not only does she totally heart to organize {for all the obvious reasons}, she also HAS A BOOK!
Clutter Rehab is my new FAVORITE organizing book. No joke. Here is why:
- This book is a little "take with you anywhere you go" handbook.
- There are a total of 101 tips and tricks on getting your life organized.
- Because most tips only take up one page each, they are easy to read, understand and most importantly, IMPLEMENT!
- She's like my long lost sister, I agree with everything mentioned in the book! Here are some of my most favorite tips that she has outlined:
- "Banish clutter excuses"
- "Consolidate... everything!"
- "Remember: less is more!"
- "Give everything a designated space"
- "Take pictures of sentimental clutter"
- "Organizing doesn't have to be expensive - make do"
- "Get kid's involved with organizing"
- "Start every week with a menu plan"
- "If you don't like something, change it"
- "Re purpose items for creative storage solutions"
- "Do a 'ten minute tidy' every night before bed"

I heart your blog AND I heart kicking clutter! I recently was very proud to kick the memorabilia clutter that I had been lugging around for literally decades. I eliminated 50% of it! It feels good and I think I will go back through it again next year as I am sure I will be ready to let go of even more!
ReplyDeleteI heart organizing and bookas about it too!

IHeart Kicking Clutter!
ReplyDeleteI recently read What's an Unorganized Person to Do? And it revolutionized a lot about our home. I'm not a naturally clean person and it takes a lot of work for me. I pulled out a notebook and took notes the whole time. I reorganized our closet, under the sink, my clothing...so much! Now if only I could get it to keep my living room clean from my crafts...
IHeart Kicking Clutter! I love the idea of taking pictures of sentimental clutter. It takes up so much less space! Love the blog! Thanks for the chance to win!
ReplyDeleteIHeart Kicking Clutter! To help teach my 6 year old son how to kick clutter, I had him help box up his winter clothes and get out his spring/summer clothes. I had him make piles of shorts and t-shirts, then count how many he had. He had to write a list of the clothes he already has, and the clothes we need to purchase (khaki shorts, sandals). That way, when we go shopping, he already knows he has 12 pairs of basketball shorts and can't beg for more :)
ReplyDeleteRenee (reneewil@gmail.com)
My husband needs to read this one. I keep telling him to downsize, but he's resistant. I do finally have him doing a "10 minute tidy" every night though and he's so proud of himself. :)

ReplyDeleteMy favorite clutter eliminating tip is to have a place for everything. So often clutter builds at my house simply because we're not sure where to put something...which means it winds up on the nearest flat surface.

I heart kicking clutter!
ReplyDeleteI use to move every year for my job. I had an annual reminder to rid myself of clutter that has collected dust over the year or things that I haven't used during that year. If I haven't used it in a year, I didn't need it. I lived in a studio apartment, so it was essential to be clutter-less
Well, now I'm coming up one my 2 year anniversary of living in house. I have never felt so cluttered and accumulated.
I could use this book as a remind on how to kick my recent cluttering habit.
IHeart Kicking Clutter! I use baskets or storage cubes for a lot of things, but I really need to work on getting things like my closets and desk more organized!
ReplyDeleteI heart kicking clutter!

IHeart Kicking Clutter! It isn't a success story yet, but we're in the process of kicking the clutter out of our home office! We're making filing systems, a budget folder, and finding a home for everything (or else getting RID OF IT!) I'd love this book.
ReplyDeleteJust posted you on my blog too! :)

iHeart kicking clutter! I am constantly going through my kids clothes to get rid of things they no longer (or can't) wear.
ReplyDeleteiHeart Kicking Clutter! I'm taking on your March family binder challenge, it's so exciting to get everything in the right place!! But I'm in need of some deep organization in my kitchen and office! Time to purge!
ReplyDeleteIHeart Kicking Clutter! I HATE clutter with a passion. I grew up in a clutter-filled house and vowed I'd never live like that in my own house. I like to get rid of things that we don't use or love periodically. I make trips to Goodwill occasionally and drop stuff off that is good enough to donate and the rest goes in the trash!
ReplyDeleteIHeart Kicking Clutter!
ReplyDeleteI recently cleaned out the pantry and the fridge. Onto bigger things now!

I heart kicking clutter. I recently found your blog and its been one of my recent inspirations to start kicking my clutter/saving everything habit (don't worry I'm not a compulsive hoarder or anything)! :) My most recent decluttering victory was going through all my clothes and weeding out the stuff I never wear any more. Then we took out all the shelves in our "closet" and made extra hanging rods so everything is hanging instead of stuffed into about 25 shelves - ahh so much better.

IHeart Kicking Clutter. I have a closet we call the "Closet of Doom" This is where everything goes to die in my house. I try to clean it out twice a year or....when things start falling out on top of us when we open it. Organizing tip, keep a basket for cords/cables (specially if your husband is a geek that keeps every cord he comes across). monicaesman@gmail.com

ReplyDeleteI'm a clutter-kicking junkie! I actually work as an organizer/bookkeeper for a friend's business and organize my friend's houses...sometimes when they actually ask me to :)
One of my hardest things to tackle is my kid's school papers that have to be returned, for example field trip slips and snack dates. I now have two cute clipboards hanging on the wall at the end of kitchen where I can click each child's spelling words, permission forms, etc... to eliminate lost/late papers. Makes me so happy :)

IHeart Kicking Clutter! One of the best things we did was to organize our son's vast Lego collection into drawered boxes used for screws, nails, etc. you find at hardware stores. He labeled the drawers himself and he can find everything he needs to make one of his amazing creations in a heartbeat!

ReplyDeleteOne of the best things I've done in my home is to separate my son's toys into four plastic tubs of varying sizes. I rotate them every 2 days or so. If he asks for something that isn't in his current tub, he has to collect everything and put it away, then I get the tub he wants. That took 3/4 of his toys out of the mix at any time and makes him participate in the cleanup!
IHeart Kicking Clutter. just went through my clothes. sprice@vnet.net
ReplyDeleteI heart kicking clutter! It is a fairly recent task for me to go through and purge/organize everything. My favorite thing to use is a regular old cardboard box covered with pretty paper. Looks like the expensive totes and costs me nothing!

ReplyDeleteIHeart kicking clutter! I live in a 2 bedroom apt. with little storage space so I have really been trying hard to get organized and declared. 1) I have started following blogs such as yours to get ideas, 2) I am participating in A Bowl full of Lemons weekly challenge as much as possible - I just organized and de cluttered my linen closet!

I just found your blog recently and would love to win this book. We just moved across country and despite getting rid of tons before the move, we have a lot left to purge. Being a military family, we never know what our 'next place' will be. As soon as I started unpacking, I set aside a box of things to donate. This helps make sure the other things coming out of the box actually get assigned a home! If someone hasn't moved recently, they can do the same thing, just tackle one cabinet/drawer at a time.
ReplyDeleteIHeart Kicking Clutter! My goal is to clean out my office drawers as I go back and read your paper orginazing project!
ReplyDeletebrendakirkbride at hotmail dot com
I HEART KICKING CLUTTER! I'm new to your site (reading for about a week) and LOVE it!! Thanks for all the great tips! My mom just sold her house of 42 years and has "dropped" several boxes of my "stuff" (aka all the papers I ever wrote, birthday cards I ever received, art I ever made...you get the picture!) at my small SF apartment...I went through everything and narrowed it down to two letters from my dad (deceased); 2 from my mom; and two from my granny. I enjoyed looking at (sorta) the rest and said goodbye. As a mom of 2 with a 3rd on the way, I've decided to keep 2 special things from each year for the kids to look through when they get older, but not boxes from every year!

IHeart Kicking Clutter. My favorite organizing tip that I've read from so many of the great blogs out there are the one in one out rule regarding closets. Every new purchase that comes in, an old item that you don't wear anymore goes out. It saves my closet from being a disaster.

Iheart kicking clutter! and your blog is awesome! Great ideas. I have recently kicked some paper clutter. A bunch of things we have had for years that were old, outdated, not needed, etc. Ya know like out-of-date policies, manuals for items long gone, and paid bills. Feels great!

IHeart Kicking Clutter! My last clutter kicking success story was my "junk" drawers in the kitchen. I was using them for not only junk but also my cake decorating items, sandwich baggies, scissors, cookie cutters, etc. Actually, they weren't junk drawers at all, they were just so unorganized that it seemed to be junk. I bought some plastic drawer organizers from the Dollar Store and now they're my favorite drawers in the house!

IHeart Kicking Clutter! I am starting to learn how to organize "stuff" so this book will be so much needed!

Iheart Kicking Clutter, and trust me when I say I'm a Clutter Queen. I had a good teacher. But with 5 monkeys, it's overwhelming, and I want to be a good mama and teach them how to be clutter free. I also have spent much time in the past helping my parents achieve this, and know my time's not up with that either. So what I learn here (and hopefully in the book) will be passed on to many people. THanks for all your awesome ideas and enthusiasm! Iheart it!

I heart kicking clutter! My favorite thing to do these days is work with my 4 and 6 year olds to train them to organize and clean their rooms. Talking with them about managing their stuff helps reinforce "rules" to me at the same time. "Don't put it down...put it away!" "One new toy in...one old toy out!" I need the reminders just as much as they need the lessons.
ReplyDeleteIHeart Kicking Clutter and your blog!! It is totally awesome. I love to have everything labeled-that way even the husband knows where things go and don't go. craig_rhiannamiller@yahoo dot com
ReplyDeleteI really don't like clutter at all! I want stuff put away and not laying around. It drives my family crazy!! ReplyDeleteI do love Laura's website and I would love to get a copy of this book. Recently, I tackled under the sink organization. I used the multi purpose clear bins from the Container Store to group all of the items. Makes it super easy to grab and get to cleaning. Thanks so much!!

ReplyDeleteI love to use clear, over the door shoe holders to help kick clutter. My favorite places to use them so far are the pantry door. Great for popcorn packs, the kids snacks, those mix or spice envelopes, and condiment bottles stored upside down. Also for the game closet. Love to put the small card games in the shoe holders so they dont get lost in the closet.

ReplyDeleteI am a work-in-progress when it comes to kicking clutter - I am in the process of embracing the notion that absolutely everything must have a space to be put away and figuring out the logistics of how to make that happen in my home. Thanks for the chance to win - this book looks amazing!

ReplyDeleteHere's my clutter free tip: Whenever you leave a room, make sure you take something with you. For example, I have a glass of water on my nightstand every night. Before I leave the bedroom the next morning, I always leave with the cup. This avoids a collection of cups on my nightstand!
Crossing fingers for this fantastic giveaway!

I heart kicking clutter...especially in my closet. that is the most tidy spot in my house..always has been (wish i could say that about the rest of the house!). Every year, I go through my closet and get rid of stuff that i haven't worn or used in the previous year. and if I haven't, the item is out no matter how cute it is. I know I can always get something cuter to replace it later. :P

This book sounds great, thanks for a chance to win. Here's a tip (I don't know if it is the best tip, but it works for me): We all know how hard it is to get kids to part with their junk. I totally bribe them! I tell them if they gather "X" number of things, or fill this big box with stuff to give away, then I will buy them ONE new toy. Or I get them excited about earning money via a garage sale and let them go to it!

ReplyDeleteI live in my Grandmothers old house. Naturally there was alot of her things still left in the house, one being an old bill paying desk. It was really a desk, it just held pens and pencils and that's it. It took up good space in my dining room and I really didn't need all those pens and pencils...so I gave the desk to my mom and am in the process of organizing my desk to hold all my office supplies.
Shared your blog on my FB page! Great stuff!

ReplyDeleteMy recent clutter kicking success was inspired by you and your photo organizing series. So, I owe you a big thank you! My husband and I had amassed an impressive collection of photos (paper) that were basically stuffed into photo boxes, still in their photo center sleeves. Over two weekends I sifted through all the photos, tossing unneeded duplicates, photo sleeves, fuzzies, and red eyes! I added labels to the photo sections and hurray! Organizing success! Thanks for the inspiration and for keeping us on track with your blog!

IHeart Kicking Clutter and IHeart your blog, Jen!! So inspirational - thanks for all the help, and thanks for the chance to win this book!! I could still use a LOT more help with getting my life organized, but one tip that's already made a huge difference for me is remembering that there are sooo many people out in the world that could use my unused things wayy better than I am right now, so I should just let them go and give them to those that need them more.

"IHeart Kicking Clutter"...I consider myself an organzing freak or what people would call me an "A" personality as in "Anal". However after two kids I find that keeping my household organzied they way I would like to be a challenge. I'm always looking for opportunities to make things "Better", "More Organized", "More Funtional", it drives my husband crazy and he's always asking me "Where is the can opener this week" (you get the picture), I think this book might come in handy....I've got it in my Amazon shopping bin, just in case I don't win and I've sent a copy to my Ipad to take a sneak peak. Thanks Jen!

IHeart Kicking Clutter!! :) My fav clutter reducing tip is to look at something and "triage: it. Does it make me happy? Do I really NEED it? Do I use it regularly? Does it hold a VERY important sentimental memory for me? If it doesn't fit any of these categories then sell it, donate it or trash it! You don't need every picture you have ever taken, every paper your kids have ever colored or every knick knack you have ever been given. You will survive and feel better because you have less "stuff" holding you down! :)
ReplyDeleteIHeart Kicking Clutter! I am in a constant cleaning and organizing mode. I have found that I have to work at it everyday to stay on top of it.

ReplyDeleteI've been trying to pare down my kids toys, but it's so hard to get rid of things they still play with, but the playroom just got too overwhelming. So I took about 50% of their toys and stashed it in the garage. I plan to rotate their toys every month or other month. My boys will think they have new toys, and clean up is much easier with less toys!

ReplyDeleteWe are having our first baby in a few weeks :) and our biggest CLUTTER challenge was doing the babies room. Before we were pregnant, it was the "catch all" room. We pulled EVERYTHING out which was a whole room full of junk! We reorganized, recycled, reused, and donated lots of stuff. We now have all that was in that room in a closet. It is amazing what you can declutter! Now we have a sweet baby nursery (we call it a nurture-y). cathleen.cullen.09@gmail.com
