September Featured Space: Bedroom - Conquering Closets {part 4}

This weekend we added a little extra function and color to the closets we have been pining away at {ever so slowly it feels!}...

If you recall.... I left you with this:

And this.....

All was looking pretty fantabulous to us, however, there may be days when we want to tuck it all away, out of site, out of mind.  Who really wants to gaze into their open clothes closet first thing in the morning?  Of course, the open closet concept is a huge motivator to keeping it "picture perfect" at all times since it's all out in the open, but who really wants pressure like that?  And it still creates some business that sometimes just needs to be shut out.

That's where closet doors typically come in... and our closets once had some typical bi-folds, however, when we painted and started working on the project, they were taken down.

Plus, we moved in.  Meaning our master bedroom and all it's furniture have since taken over the space...

And our furniture isn't small....

So when you pair our bed and nightstands next to the closet, there is no longer room for a bi-fold to open...

Enter a birthday Target Gift Card {Thank You BFF!}, used to purchase two curtain panels at $7.99 each and two tension rods at $3.99 each.

The curtain panels were the perfect and uber easy solution to the small space, and the best part is they added a splash of color to the bleak looking walls!

Notice the tight fit between the closet and nightstand?  No way a bi-fold would be working here...

And for the times when I want to chill at my new desk space for awhile, a little hook {painted white to match the trim} was screwed in to serve as a curtain tie back:

Just using some twine, the curtain stays held back and out of the way!

Giving me a working view of this:

Total Cost:  Just under $25 smackaroos!  Happy tingles while working in my new space:  Priceless!

And now for the Before & Afters:

Using window coverings solely for windows is out, and using window coverings for closets, room dividers, shelving concealers or to add mega drama behind a bed... is the way to go!  You gotta heart that!

Who else out there is getting creative with window treatments, thinkin' outside that window box and using them for something different?  I would heart to hear!

  1. Gorgeous!!! I love your creative solutions. What a great work area!! Where did you find the cute boxes that are on the walls? The white ones that are holding paper etc. They are so darn cute and I noticed you have used them in different places in your home. Love your blog!! Sooooooo many cute ideas! I actually went to Target yesterday and purchased a bunch of the cleaning products you recommend. But I couldn't find the o-mop!! Darn it!!

  4. Hi Renee!

I found the bins at Target at the beginning of the year, and haven't found them again since. I keep scouring their isles for something similar since IHeart the ones I found so much, for everything from kitchen towels to bathroom storage and everything else in between! No need to just use them for magazines, they are too cute! :)

If I ever find anything similar I will make sure to post about it, they seem to be quite the hit on here, I have been getting lots of questions about them!

    xoxo,
    Jen

  5. Love it. I made some curtains out of sheets to mask an ugly closet opening. Problem is the darn tension rod keeps falling down with the slightest curtain movement. Would you mine sharing how yours is rigged?

  6. Hello Pine Tree Home!

It was funny because the hubs and I each put up one of the curtain rods, and his stayed and mine fell...

I had him do it for me, and all he did was get it in tighter {by twisting out the rod further} than I could have originally. It has been working great for days without falling, so maybe when you think you have gone far enough, just go a little bit further to see if that will help?

  7. I put a shower curtain up for my daughter's room. I'm on the 2nd shower curtain with her room redo. It's not long enough so I had lowered the curtain and made a valance. Duh! I could have just bought an 84 in curtain.

I saw one of your design tiles like this:

Josh & Erin's Master Suite Design Style Tile

Would you do a tutorial on how to create that? I really want to make one for my room redo (that I'm forever working on).

    Thanks, Katharine

  9. P.S. On the tutorial, I meant when things calm down after you having to rearrange everything to a new home. Just know us bloggers are rooting for you and your family. :)

  12. Hello Palmer Family!

The cream lamp was a Pottery Barn splurge {http://www.potterybarn.com/products/alexis-ceramic-table-lamp-base/?pkey=x|4|1||10|porcelain%20blue||0&cm_src=SCH}, I do have two and I typically never spend that much on lighting but I had gift cards... and they are the highest quality lamps I have ever owned. If you are looking for similar style on a tighter budget, I would recommend Home Goods and Marshall's for cheaper yet similar options.

    Thanks!!

  13. I love this post! I hope it is okay - I used one of your pictures as inspiration in a post I wrote on using drapes for closet doors (linked back to you, of course). You can read it here: http://illpullout.blogspot.com/2010/12/using-curtains-for-closet-doors.html

  18. Just stumbled upon your blog today and I CAN't STOP READING!!! Love it!

I read in another post of yours that this was your first time tackling wallpaper. I am so glad to read that you took on wallpapering as a DIY project (for some reason I had it in my head that wallpapering was only for the pros).

Do you mind sharing more about how the whole wallpapering experience went down for you? I too have non-smooth walls and was wondering if I should lay underliner down before laying the actaul wallpaper itself? How would you rate wallpapering on and easy-hard scale?

Just thought I'd get some insight from a wallpapering newby before taking the plunge myself:)

    Love the blog!

  19. Hi Serina!

Not sure if you saw this post: http://iheartorganizing.blogspot.com/2010/08/august-featured-space-bedroom_23.html
But basically, it wasn't easy. We got all the paper up, and came back to find it all peeling off. It was really awful and discouraging and my husband wanted to give up but I was persistent. We went to the hardware store right away and got a paste and a brush and re-did it. It STAYED! :) The next time around, we just used a paste with the pre-pasted paper and it worked much better. It could have been because we had painted or primed textured walls behind it that it didn't work the first go at it... not sure. In the end though, I would say it's totally a two person job, and somewhat tedious but always worth it in the end!

    Hope that helps a little!

    Jen

  24. If anyone is still looking for the white wall organizers on the left side of the wall, I've seen them at TJ Maxx. You could probably also try similar stores like Ross or Tuesday Morning.

  27. Hi, What tension rods do you recommend? Some are so flimsy and break easily. We are doing a dorm curtain for a closet door for my daughter. It is about 38" wide. Thank you!
